Short, Sweet, and highly Analytical

Please realize how short this is, and that it is structured like a report, but the writing and thematic style is quite enjoyable. Highlights many of the biggest feminist writers and medium-close analyzes one or two of their most influential writings, giving a good sense of feminism through written works.

As a primer, I found this highly readable and hence award it full points, although your mileage may vary. I wouldn't suggest it to scholars looking for the entire breadth of feminism, but for curious individuals I would.

I used it alongside my class materials and it was incredibly helpful.

It essentially distills and decodes in a way that is both readable, and extremely clarifying.

Baudrillard's philosophy centers on the criticism of traditional critical thinking. His thesis is that we live in an illusion, or a "hyperreality," where reality is the illusion of truth. Inspiration to All Philosophers

Baudrillard's ideas are trenchant, contemporary, and multi-dimensional. I recommend this book for every contemporary intellectual in the English-speaking world. Baudrillard's ideas, as some critics have said, are not to be ignored.

Baudrillard provides an important platform for dimensional theories I am developing in my own works, which are part of the Dimensional Encyclopedia (a work in progress, some volumes of which have already been published with my direct publisher).

Although more nihilistic than he might be, there is no doubt that Baudrillard has some of the best ideas, ideas that importantly span between such areas as epistemology and social criticism.

'Paroxysm' is an important work of philosophy in the form of superb interviews. It influenced my use of the word 'paroxysm' to define a double-paradox or solution to all paradoxes, although Baudrillard does not define the term this way.

Postmodern nonsense

Here's a big heads up. Although I have the deepest respect for Philippe Petit, ( he was the guy that walked across a wire between the twin towers in New York). Petit does an admirable job of trying to tease out what the heck Baudrillard is trying to say. And some of the things he says make a certain amount of sense, it is just that the way he says it that is the problem. This is a great instantiation of taking a few good ideas and killing them with circular, redundant, boring prose; the sure "tell" of a postmodern mind caught in its own web of obfuscation.

Fast-Paced Erotic Journey

I read this book very quickly, as the pacing is wonderful. It's a fun ride with three main characters, all of whom are strong and have a clear cut purpose. At first, I thought it was about saving a planet, Verdantia. But, it becomes much more. It is as much the characters' journeys as the story of protecting a race and culture.

The author did not use miscommunication as the tension between the characters. (Thank you!) Rather, the characters upped the ante for each other through love, understanding and lots of sex and lovemaking. It is erotica, after all!

The female lead is refreshingly strong - from the beginning. And, the twists and turns they must take are interesting and fun. Highly recommended book!

Everything I could ever want in a SciFi Erotica Romance

**I received an Advanced Review Copy (ARC) in order to review and provide honest feedback **

I will be perfectly honest. It takes a great deal for a work of Erotica to earn 5 stars and impress me while doing it. While I do enjoy a well written intimacy scene in a book, I am not really interested in sex for sex's sake, which is the hallmark failure of most erotica books in any genre. If there is copious amounts of sex going on, I want there to be a very good and believable reason for it. Not only did Hers To Command deliver on that, Knight surrounded the very heated intimacy scenes with substance.

The prologue of the book begins with a historical account of the colonization, uniqueness and history of the planet Verdantia. While I am not a fan of "world building" prologues (which in most cases is just a lazy-author excuse for spewing forth an info-dump in order to avoid having to work it into the actual story), I reserved judgement and continued reading, not really expecting much if the prologue was any indication. Typically, stories with a prologue like that will fail at doing any kind of enjoyable or significant world building within the rest of the book, resulting in an automatic three stars on my score-card. I know this can be seen as a bit harsh, but my background is Space Opera, folks, where world-building is queen, second only to an epic story.

Imagine my chagrined surprise when Knight proceeded to hand me a well-formed world-building hat, lathered in rich story-dripping ketchup, and asked me to eat it. And eat it, I did.

Verdantia and its cast of characters are presented as living, breathing three-dimensional props that support not only the reason for the very heated intimacy, but also a story and world that has a long standing history, a complex present and an uncertain future. There is a war raging on Verdantia, and because of its unique physical properties which renders technological devices useless, the war is a brutal campaign of swords, horses, and all the medieval trappings of a fantasy novel. This is supplemented in the science-fiction sense by the science of the planet's electromagnetic properties, which the commoners call magick, and the participation in the war by the League of Federated Planets. There is an interplanetary war between the Haarb, Verdantia and the LFP who is backing Verdantia in a support role. So, although the book does have a strong Fantasy vibe at times, it is a work of Science Fiction.

So, world-building: Check. Science Fiction with a unique twist: Check. Characters.... Check, Check, Check. Three checks for three very well crafted characters, who are also supported by a full cast of memorable people. Even the smallest role is given enough life for me to remember them twenty pages later. I won't spend much more time on the characters, as I expect many of the other reviews to focus on the three protagonists, but I will state that Ari is a strong, captivating man with presence and a reluctant heart. Fleur is just as strong, with a quick enjoyable wit but who still retains a hint of graceful naivete, and Doral is the aloof, cool, grounding force with a troubled past that completes the Tetriarch.

There are two lead villains - one a corrupted government official who loves money almost as much as he loves himself, and Krakoll who is the leader of the Haarb brute forces who are trying to conquer Verdantia for its wealth of an aphrodisiac spice called cinnagrin. They have almost equal appearances in the book, and I am hoping to see more of Krakoll in book 2, as he was the more viciously interesting of the two.

I think my only true gripe with this book falls back to the prologue. I don't think it was necessary, I think it will, however, lead to the confusion and possible deterrent to readers with less science-fictional interest. I think some of the points in the prologue should be woven into the story (though many are) and it should be removed.

Overall, very impressed and I am looking forward to book 2, Hers To Choose, due out in July.

Verdantia is an erotic delight. What a planet!

Patricia Knight seamlessly weaves a whole new world, society, and culture through tantalizing, steamy scenes that make a woman yearn to experience a man (or two) with the endurance her heroes repeatedly demonstrate to the point of torture. She puts Fleur through ecstatic heaven, and a little bit of hell judging from Fleur's demand for some serious payback on at least one occasion.

The beauty of this novel is that the Verdantian's salvation depends on this trio spending a lot of intimate time together. This book has two strong-minded, well-endowed, and dangerous heroes, one relatively inexperienced but charming princess, and a well-crafted plot that lifts this book from the normal fare of erotica into a sci-fi fantastical feast for the senses.

About the Author

H. Russell Bernard is Professor of Anthropology, Emeritus at the University of Florida. He served as editor of the American Anthropologist and Human Organization. He is co-founder (with Pertti Pelto and Stephen Borgatti) of the Cultural Anthropology Methods journal (1989), which became Field Methods in 1999. The five editions of his methods text Research Methods in Anthropology (AltaMira 2006) and his general research methods text Social Research Methods (Sage 2012), have been used by tens of thousands of students. Bernard co-founded (with Pelto) and co-directed (with Pelto and Borgatti) the National Science Foundation's Institute on Research Methods in Cultural Anthropology and has done fieldwork in Greece, Mexico, and the U.S.A. His publications include (with Jesús Salinas Pedraza) Native Ethnography: A Otomí Indian Describes His Culture (Sage, 1989). Bernard is known as well for his work, with Peter Killworth, Eugene Johnsen, Christopher McCarty, and Gene A. Shelley, on network analysis, including work on the network scale-up method for estimating hard-to-count populations. In 2010, Bernard was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Needed it for class. The author attempts to write in a semi-chatty way which is ok for a novel or pleasure reading,
but for academic I prefer to have the information delivered in a clear, professional way/manner. Terms are introduced without clear
definitions and there is no glossary, so you're left to get the definition from a page of examples which is far from
ideal as it leaves ideas open to interpretation. Half the time I can't connect the examples to the terms and am left to
go searching for more comprehensive sources.

Wordy and poorly organized, but what's the alternative?

This book was the main textbook for a graduate-level course on research methods that I took, which was aimed at an interdisciplinary audience of students with diverse backgrounds. This book is enjoyable when it gives examples of previously conducted studies, but otherwise both dry and unclear. Frustratingly, terms are rarely defined when they are introduced, which might make this book more practical as a reference than as an introduction to students unfamiliar with the subject.

The chapters on statistics are particularly unenlightening; I would strongly recommend a separate book on the subject targeted to the reader's particular needs and interests (for instance, an econometrics text for those using economic methodologies).

Unfortunately, there is no perfect text on the subject of research methods for the social sciences, so you might have to stick to this one. If that's the case, my advice is to supplement it heavily with other resources. Enjoy the case studies, but don't expect to understand the terminology or to get a concrete, step-by-step tutorial on implementing the methods listed in this lengthy primer.

"We Might Sometimes Go Hungry, But We Will Never Want for Adventure..."

Philip Pullman is best known for his young-adult fantasy series "His Dark Materials" as well as the Victorian thrillers starring Sally Lockhart, but he also has quite a few children's books under his belt, all of which are whimsical and comedic in nature. "The Scarecrow and his Servant" is one such story, highly reminiscent of Lloyd Alexander's work and definitely a change of pace from Pullman's darker, more sophisticated fare.

A farmer builds a scarecrow with a turnip for a head and a broomstick for a backbone, and plants it in a field with these words of advice: "Now remember what your job is, and remember where you belong. Be courteous, be brave, and be honorable, and be kind. And the best of blooming luck." Unfortunately, the scarecrow's tenure in this particular field does not last long - each night he is stolen by a neighboring farm until he is miles away from home. But one night, in one of those million-to-one chances, the scarecrow is struck by a bolt of lightning.

Life quickens in his body, and he steps down from his perch with a clear understanding of his purpose in life: to scare birds and to fulfill his Inner Conviction of claiming Spring Valley for his own. He is joined by a young boy called Jack - with no family of his own, Jack accepts the position of servant to the scarecrow, and the two of them start off on the road to seek their fortune.

What follows is an adventure of brigands, actors, armies, birds, and lawyers, in which the scarecrow and his servant traverse the Italian countryside, fall into trouble, muddle their way out again, and inch ever-closer to their goal. Pullman relies heavily on the fairy-tale motif of a foolish master and a wise servant, for the scarecrow can often be brash and foolhardy, and it is Jack's quick thinking that keeps the two of them out of dire straits. They keep up a witty banter throughout, and their dynamic is really rather heartwarming by the book's conclusion.

Long-time fans of Pullman might notice the reoccurring theme of author's fascination with the transitory nature of physicality. In this case, various bits of the scarecrow fall off through his travels only to be replaced with other bits of paraphernalia, until it is argued at the end of the book that he is no longer the scarecrow that started his journey, but a different entity altogether. How true is this? What makes us who we are?

A similar question popped up in "The Tin Princess", in which a national flag is re-sewn until not a single thread remains that was part of the original, and in Pullman's oft-told personal anecdote about his writing shed, which went through so much disrepair and rebuilding that he doubts that any of it is part of the initial building. It poses an interesting question to young readers - where exactly does our character and substance lie? How much of it do you have to take away before one ceases to be? Pretty hefty stuff really, but this IS from the same author who killed off God in a young adult trilogy...

The story all ties together nicely by the end of the book, and is illustrated throughout by Peter Bailey, who has collaborated with Pullman on a number of his children's books. I don't think it's the *most* inventive that Pullman has ever been, but it certainly makes for a humorous and entertaining read.

Beware! This is not the book described in the reviews.

The book described in the editorial and readers' reviews is not the book being sold here. The book I received is not the novel described by the reviewers; it is an adaptation in the form of a play. Clicking on the illustration to get a look inside shows the paperback novel, not this adaptation. The novel itself seems to be available only through Amazon Marketplace sellers.

Amazon's practice of concatenating all reviews of all editions of a book often makes it difficult to determine what reviewers think about the particular edition one is looking at, but to show only reviews pertaining to other editions and none pertaining to the quite different book being sold goes beyond laziness.
