Paroxysm, by Jean Baudrillard, Philippe Petit

Closely interviewed by the French journalist Philippe Petit, Baudrillard covers a vast range of topics, including Fukuyama, 1989 and the collapse of Communism; Bosnia, the Gulf War, Rwanda and the New World Order; globalization and universalization; the return of ethnic nationalisms; the nature of war; revisionism and Holocaust denial; Deleuze, Foucalt, Bataille and Virilio; nihilism and the apocalyptic; the practice of writing; virtual reality; the west and the East; the culture of victimhood and repentance; human rights and citizenship; French intellectuals and engagement; the nature of capitalism today; consumer society and social exclusion; liberation; death, violence and necrophilia; reality, illusion and the media; and destabilization of all aspects of life including sexuality.

Baudrillard’s answers—which span politics, philosophy and culture—are concise, witty and trenchant, and they serve as both an accessible introduction to his ideas for the unfamiliar and a fascinating clarification of recent positions for the connoisseur.

From Library Journal
To many, Baudrillard's writings are too abstract to comprehend and analyze; to some, they resemble poetry more than philosophical texts. Whatever one thinks of the man and his work, he is arguably one of the most controversial and stimulating contemporary French philosophers. This book, a series of interviews with him, can indeed be an effective way?especially for the novice reader of his work?to get an idea of his philosophy. The seven chapters cover various political, cultural, and philosophical issues ranging from the New World Order, Bosnia, and the Gulf War to Holocaust denial, human rights, and the nature of capitalism. Baudrillard's philosophy centers on the criticism of traditional critical thinking. His thesis is that we live in an illusion, or a "hyperreality," where reality is the illusion of truth. His diagnosis of contemporary issues and events sheds light on that philosophical thinking, which is identified with the post-Marxist intellectual Left. Highly recommended for academic collections.?Ali Houissa, Cornell Univ., Ithaca, NY

Inspiration to All Philosophers
By N. Coppedge
Baudrillard's ideas are trenchant, contemporary, and multi-dimensional. I recommend this book for every contemporary intellectual in the English-speaking world. Baudrillard's ideas, as some critics have said, are not to be ignored.

Baudrillard provides an important platform for dimensional theories I am developing in my own works, which are part of the Dimensional Encyclopedia (a work in progress, some volumes of which have already been published with my direct publisher).

Although more nihilistic than he might be, there is no doubt that Baudrillard has some of the best ideas, ideas that importantly span between such areas as epistemology and social criticism.

'Paroxysm' is an important work of philosophy in the form of superb interviews. It influenced my use of the word 'paroxysm' to define a double-paradox or solution to all paradoxes, although Baudrillard does not define the term this way.

Postmodern nonsense
By Ed Rohr
Here's a big heads up. Although I have the deepest respect for Philippe Petit, ( he was the guy that walked across a wire between the twin towers in New York). Petit does an admirable job of trying to tease out what the heck Baudrillard is trying to say. And some of the things he says make a certain amount of sense, it is just that the way he says it that is the problem. This is a great instantiation of taking a few good ideas and killing them with circular, redundant, boring prose; the sure "tell" of a postmodern mind caught in its own web of obfuscation.

Great Introduction
By B. Heath Robinson
This is a great introduction to Baudrillard's thought. Petit probes Baudrillard's mind on key points of his analysis. Baudrillard provides clear(as clear as it gets) explanations of what he intends for the reader to understand.
