Voodoo Histories: The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History, by David Aaronovitch

An absorbing, probing look at the conspiracy theories that operate on the sidelines of history and the reasons they continue to play such a seditious role, from an award-winning journalist.

Our age is obsessed by the idea of conspiracy. We see it everywhere- from Pearl Harbor to 9/11, from the assassination of Kennedy to the death of Diana. In this age of terrorism we live in, the role of conspiracy is a serious one, one that can fuel radical or fringe elements to violence.

For David Aaronovitch, there came a time when he started to see a pattern among these inflammatory theories. these theories used similarly murky methods with which to insinuate their claims: they linked themselves to the supposed conspiracies of the past (it happened then so it can happen now); they carefully manipulated their evidence to hide its holes; they relied on the authority of dubious academic sources. Most important, they elevated their believers to membership of an elite- a group of people able to see beyond lies to a higher reality. But why believe something that entails stretching the bounds of probability so far? Surely it is more likely that men did actually land on the moon in 1969 than that thousands of people were enlisted to fabricate an elaborate hoax.

In this entertaining and enlightening book -aimed at providing ammunition for those who have found themselves at the wrong end of a conversation about moon landings or the twin towers-Aaronovitch carefully probes and explodes a dozen of the major conspiracy theories. In doing so, he examines why people believe them, and makes an argument for a true skepticism: one based on a thorough knowledge of history and a strong dose of common sense.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Like Michael Shermer in Why People Believe Weird Things (1997), or Damian Thompson in Counterknowledge (2008), Aaronovitch tackles the intriguing question of why people accept as factual things that are patently (and provably) untrue. Most of the popular conspiracy theories are here: 9/11 as an inside job; the faked moon landings; the secret Zionist world empire; the Priory of Scion’s mission to safeguard the bloodline of Jesus; the murder of Vince Foster; the noncitizenship of Barack Obama. Aaronovitch demonstrates where the theories go off the rails (the Priory of Scion was a hoax concocted in the mid-1950s, for instance), and he examines the reasons why elaborate conspiracy theories, despite being so implausibly complex, capture the imaginations of so many people. It’s due to a mixture of credulity, a lack of critical reasoning, a need for an underlying explanation for the inexplicable, and—perhaps most important—an inability to distinguish between the possible and the wildly implausible (for example, which is more likely: that astronauts actually went to the moon, or that thousands of people, including the astronauts themselves, perpetrated, and are still perpetrating, a mammoth hoax?). The author also examines the role the Internet now plays in disseminating, and lending apparent validity to, crackpot theories. The book is an evenhanded, lively, and fascinating look not just at the people who believe these theories but also at the people who promote them: the evidence manipulators, the liars, the con artists, and the almost pathetically gullible and uninformed. --David Pitt

Review
"Terrifying, hilarious, irreverent and addictively compelling, Voodoo Histories is an instant classic that should be read by everyone—a brilliant, witty and devastating analysis of, and guide to, the big lies of modern history by our most brilliant commentator" – Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of Young Stalin and Stalin: The Court Of The Red Tsar"A brilliant, sparkling and witty demolition of numerous conspiracy theories—not only dotty but sometimes, as in the case of the fabricated Protocols of the Elders of Zion—highly dangerous and an analysis of why otherwise intelligent people are so ready to believe in them" – Ian Kershaw, author of Hitler

What the book is, and what it is not
By Mr. Twisted
After reading several of the negative reviews, I thought a more pointed one was needed in response to clear a few things up for those who have not read the book.

First off, the book is very well written and in a fast-paced, easy to read styles. It's not boring (regardless of agreeing with the author or not), nor is it overly long.

That being said, it brings me to my main point: this is not a scholarly, historically exhaustive work of research; it is an investigative look into how conspiracies begin and the people who latch on to them. Does that mean that it's not researched? No, there is a fairly extensive bibliography, and he has clearly documented his sources. However, it is not done in the way a historical textbook would do so -- but there again, it's not written from that point of view.

The key to remember here -- and this is for those negative reviewers who so adamantly want to hold on to their theories -- is the theme of how these theories get started, and why they become popular. This is of special interest to me because it is clear that there has to be a motivation for believing in most conspiracy theories; one has to *want* them to be true at some level for them to get off the ground, otherwise they wouldn't due to the incredible lack of factual support.

But here we come to the famous rebuttal offered up (which I have seen in the reviews here): "We are just asking questions. That's why it's a 'theory' and it's not perfect. But you have to admit that ____ and ____ don't add up!" This statement -- or a similar form -- is offered up every time a conspiracy theorist is confronted with hard facts. And this book addresses that exact issue, rather than going down the road of saying "here's this reference, and this one, and this one, and this one..." The fact is, any story in history, if viewed long enough and from enough angles (if I stand on my head and close one eye) can be a questionable occurence that looks "suspicious." I think if one investigated hard enough, they could probably find evidence suggesting that the NFL is fixed, politicians are really aliens, the military is spying on cats, that Jews are actually Chinese and that your own Mom is not who she says she is.

For those of us who have actually held a security clearance and worked in government, however, this book is quite refreshing and right on the money -- as much as we would like everyone to believe that we can pull off some grand conspiracy and keep huge secrets, we're just not that capable. Really, I wish it were different.

And to answer the question of why I gave it four stars instead of five, well...it's not that it wasn't good, I just save the five-star rating for something that really sets my hair on fire. If I throw those things out with every book I like, it hurts the credibility of the rating system. That's how I roll.

Makes its Point, but then Becomes a bit Tiresome
By CJA
The author, a journalist, recounts a number of leading conspiracy theories, rebuts them, and exposes their common themes. With respect to some conspriacies -- such as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion (the alleged Jewish conspiracy for world domination) -- he absolutely obliterates them with great panache. Others -- such as the Kennedy Assassination theories -- he rebuts in a more cursory fashion. What unites the conspiracy theories is part resentment of shadowy elites, part desire to explain the failure of one's own political movement to succeed, and part a desire to impose some rational explanation on random acts of evil or misfortune.

Conspiracy theories show staying power by defining some event as logically impossible -- for example the magic bullet that hit Kennedy and Connolly or the inability of Marilyn Monroe's body to absorb the amount of barbituates found in her or the lack of wreckage resembling an airplane by the Pentagon on 9/11. Such an impossible fact justifies conspiracy proponents to reject the conventional explantion and to propose all sorts of wild alternative theories. Such theories are resistant even to an attack on the core -- such as evidence showing that Oswald did not have to be a particularly great shot to hit Kennedy and that the path of the bullet does have a rational explanation. Such attacks involve too many details and complexities, thereby allowing the conspiracy proponent to refuse to see their truth.

This is interesting as far as it goes. But instead of exploring the reasons in human nature, politics, and history for such conspiracy theories, Aaronovitch just keeps jumping to new conspiracies and saying the same thing. Thus, the book does become a bit tiresome after a while.

Kryptonite for the gullible!
By Delighted, Tunbridge Wells
I bought this review primarily on the basis of the review by "H.Josson". No-one in their right mind could write a review along the lines of the book being "delusional [and] lazy" (it simply isn't). The reviewer's hysterical reaction to what is a well-written and thought-provoking (if very depressing) book simply doesn't stack up. Why would a reviewer buy an early copy of this book - write a review which is borderline out-of-control and put their rantings up on Amazon UK and US? Could it be that Mr Aaronovitch has written this review himself? It has all the hallmarks of what he himself describes: ignore facts and focus on specious rumour, "no-one understands the secret mysteries as I do because I have special insights", throw mud at objective analysis to distract attention from the reviewer's own fantasies and, of course, the throw-away line "as crooked as a banker". This resonates with the anti-semitism described in Chapter One of the book, where the Jews were blamed for all the evils of the world. (I'm not defending the bankers here, but "crooked as a banker" is just so tacky!) If H.Josson is David Aaronovitch, it makes a very good conspiracy - unfortunately seen through rather quickly by the raft of comments on the review on Amazon UK.

The book is well-documented and the sources are of real writers, not, as in the case of the usual conspiracy-revealers, all referring to other "famous conspiracy experts".

My own view is that it is an extremely thoughtful explanation of why the gullible lock on to secret mysteries, conspiracies and insights and avoid any historical analysis, belying any familiarity with reality and current affairs or historical occurrences. The twelve selected conspiracies are all cogently explained and the psychological analysis of why the sad/gullible choose conspiracy over the most likely explanation (Ockham's razor) is depressingly rational. There are no shortage of people in the world who would rather believe fantasy over reality and, I suppose, for that reason alone I gave the book four stars. It presents a very sad, but convincing truth.

If you want to understand why people believe complete eyewash, this book is a very good place to start.

With both good speed and good hands, wide receiver Brock Ripley should be a natural for the varsity team, but he shies away from physicalcontact. When he gets cut from varsity, he also loses his friendship with star quarterback Hunter Gates who begins lashing out at not only Brock, but also Brock’s friend, the quiet and smart Richie Fang. Brock wants to stand up for Fang, but he is younger, smaller, and doesn’t want to cause problems. But when the bullying goes too far, will Brock be able to face his fears, stop being a bystander, and prove to himself that he is brave enough?

About the Author

Carl Deuker participated in several sports as a boy. He was good enough to make most teams, but not quite good enough to play much. He describes himself as a classic second-stringer. "I was too slow and too short for basketball; I was too small for football, a little too chicken to hang in there against the best fastballs. So, by my senior year the only sport I was still playing was golf." Carl still loves playing golf early on Sunday mornings at Jefferson Park in Seattle, the course on which Fred Couples learned to play. His handicap at present is 13. Combining his enthusiasm for both writing and athletics, Carl has created many exciting, award-winning novels for young adults. He currently lives in Seattle, Washington, with his wife and daughter.

Chapter 1

I don’t know what it is, but I do know that Hunter Gates had it. Not just because he was bigger and stronger than everybody else. He had it in the way he cocked his head, the way he looked at you, the way he didn’t look at you. He let you know that he came first and everyone else followed and that was how it was meant to be. It’s why I never liked him, not in middle school, not in high school. And it’s also why—until he went full throttle after Richie Fang—I wanted to be his friend.
It was a hot June day when Hunter Gates showed up. I was hanging out with Trevor Marino, Austin Pauley, and the McDermott twins—Rory and Tim. Eighth grade was over; Whitman Middle School was over. You’re in between things when you’re that age: you can’t wait to grow up, but you’re scared of it too.
We’d met at the skateboard park by the library at noon and then drifted down to Gilman Park. We had no plans, so we killed time in the shady area between the wading pool and the basketball court, where a half-dozen shirtless high school guys were playing a full-court game.
Every once in a while, one of us would disrespect another guy—say something about his sister’s body or his own zits. It was a joke, but there was always the taste of truth to it, so whoever got dissed would chase his tormentor around, pretending to be mad enough to fight. Sometimes the chase would go through the wading pool, which ticked off the mothers hovering over their toddlers. They glared at us, and finally Mrs. Rojas—the woman who’d supervised the wading pool for a million years—told us to leave.
We argued that we hadn’t done anything wrong and that America was a free country, but she threw up her thumb like an umpire making a call at home plate. “Out of here. You’re too old to be hanging around a wading pool.”
Rory McDermott had brought along his soccer ball—we’d all played on the Whitman Wildcats, our middle school’s soccer team—so we wandered over to the soccer field and started kicking it back and forth.
Hunter Gates was two years older than us, so he was heading into his junior year. He was bigger, stronger, tougher, and meaner than anybody else.
Every time I saw Hunter, I remembered Jerry Jerzek. There was nothing special about Jerry. He wasn’t smart or funny or athletic. He was just a good guy.
I don’t know what Jerry did to Hunter—or if he even did anything. But in seventh grade, right after Halloween, Hunter got on him, and that meant that Hunter’s friends got on him too. They said that his ears were too big, that he crapped logs that clogged the school toilets, that his mother’d had sex with an iguana. And then they started calling him Jerry Jumper.
Nobody knew what the joke was. But every time Hunter or one of his buddies—and he had about a dozen in his posse—spotted Jerry, they’d scream, “Jump, Jerry, jump!”
Jerry tried to ignore them, but then they’d come at him and play-slap him on the side of his face until he finally jumped as if he were on an invisible pogo stick. Once Jerry was red in the face and sweating, Hunter would tell him he could stop. “We’re just kidding you, Jerry. No hard feelings.”
After Hunter and those guys got on him, nobody wanted to be seen with Jerry. It was as if he had diarrhea or something worse. I once saw him throwing up in the bushes before school. Not long after that, he started skipping school, and in February he transferred to McClure on Queen Anne Hill.

In my fourth grade science class, my teacher once emptied a bottle of iron filings onto a piece of paper and drew a magnet back and forth above them. The filings danced around the paper, drawn to that magnet wherever it went. That’s how it was with Hunter Gates. He drew people to him, even if what he was doing made your insides churn.
The reason was simple. Name a sport where a ball bounced, and Hunter was great at it. Not good—great. Football was his best sport. His father started grooming him to be an NFL quarterback from the day he was born. Hunter’s Crown Hill junior football team won the league title every year, and then he was great again in middle school. As a high school freshman, he took Crown Hill High from city laughingstock to the brink of the playoffs. Everybody figured he’d just go on being great, but his sophomore year was mediocre. Not bad, but not good—he was just another quarterback. It was the first time he’d been ordinary.

That June day, while I kicked the ball around with the McDermott twins and the other guys, Hunter and his father unpacked their gear and started throwing a football back and forth. His father was a big-shot attorney for an oil company that did fracking in North Dakota, but he didn’t ignore Hunter. At every game and most practices, he was on the sidelines—one of those parent volunteers who do nothing but work with their own son.
Whenever I’d seen Hunter’s father at a game or practice, he had his arms crossed in front of his chest, a baseball cap pulled down over his eyes, and a grim look on his face. He didn’t scream, but he never smiled, either. Tough love is what my dad called it. “His kid has a ton of talent, so he doesn’t want him to waste it. Hard to blame him for that.”
All of Hunter’s passes that late June day were bullets, straight as a string. But no matter how well he threw, his father saw something wrong. His arm wasn’t high enough; he was stepping too far forward; his footwork was slow.
I didn’t want a father like that, but I did wish my father could go to the park with me, kick a soccer ball around, and just be a dad.

No guts, no glory?
By E.M. Bristol
Brock Ripley doesn't want to be like Hunter Gates, a fellow teammate and star on their football team, but he has to admit the guy's got "it," the charisma that automatically draws people to him. But Hunter's dad does give Brock the opportunity to practice football, something his own dad, who has recently become disabled, cannot do. But Brock still recognizes the bully in Hunter, especially after Hunter and his friends begin to pick on Brock's friend, Richie Fang, the new kid at school, whose mom is terminally ill. Richie is funny, excels at multiple interests and is not afraid to push back if he feels it's the right thing to do. When Richie joins the football team and displays a gift, Brock hopes that this will smooth things over with Hunger and his group, but when it begins to look like things are getting worse, Brock must decide whether or not to take a stand.

Thoughts: It was interesting to see how high school coaches and sports program are handling the issue of concussions (as well as parents), now that information linking them to an array of serious health issues has been made public. The characters in "Gutless" are all aware of the recent controversy and must keep that in mind as they choose to play a sport now considered more long-term dangerous than in the past.

The author (as I am not) is clearly an expert on high school level sports like football and soccer and writes about them with authority. As I am not an expert, I can't speak to the accuracy, but all the jargon sounds legitimate to me.

The chapters are quite short - no more than a couple of pages, which makes for a choppy read that I found difficult to adjust to and be absorbed in for awhile at the beginning. It also took quite awhile before I figured out where the story was going.

Overall, it was easy to sympathize with Brock's dilemma, as most of us have had at least one time when we should have spoken up and didn't. I wish there had been less sports jargon and more development of some of the secondary characters, but I enjoyed it.

I can truthfully say that even the most unathletic of readers will enjoy GUTLESS.
By Teen Reads
Brock Ripley was painfully aware of many things.

One: His father would never be the same and watching his parents try to be enthusiastic about things only made it worse.

Two: Hunter Gates was the notorious bully that crushed anybody who so much as looked at him the wrong way. Despite this, Brock desperately wanted to prove himself to him, especially since it was because of Hunter that Brock discovered his love for football, and that only made things worse.

Three: He didn't want to befriend Richie Fang. Brock had only asked if the seat was open, not if Richie wanted a best friend. The fact that Brock actually ended up liking the guy only complicated matters, which of course, continued making things worse.

Four: Brock couldn't seem to stand and fight, not even when his career in sports and his friendships depended on it. This was the worst of all. He was a coward, had a big, fat, yellow streak running down his back and everybody knew it.
Carl Deuker goes from family to friendship to sports and back in a mostly relatable story told from the point of view of Brock Ripley. I'm not sure how many people are naturally varsity football material like Brock, but I know that GUTLESS strays from the field enough to leave room for other relatable topics. Like Brock, everybody has problems and fears even if they always have a smile on their face. This was probably the main idea of the book (I swear I haven't spoiled anything) and Carl Deuker definitely did a great job at portraying it. The build-up of the story left me wondering when my prediction would occur.

As somebody who is far from interested in sports I can truthfully say that even the most unathletic of readers will enjoy GUTLESS. For the first time ever, I found myself enjoying a sport. There were times when I was really lost but even so, the football "plays” did not overshadow enough of a scenario to leave me completely at a loss.

The characters in GUTLESS were admittedly stereotypical. Richie is the overachieving foreigner. Hunter is the handsome jock that enjoys harassing those below him on the social pyramid. Brock is your average Joe that just so happens to have a paralyzing fear and a natural talent for football. Despite the small dissatisfaction of the lack of development from some characters, the climax was anticipated. I wondered chapter after chapter about when my prediction would come true. Every time something seemed to be over, it wasn’t. The ending was surprisingly (and unusually) satisfying, though.

Even though GUTLESS was incredibly different from a book called FALL FROM GRACE by Charles Benoit, I found similarities in the main characters. So if you've read Benoit's book, make sure to check out GUTLESS.

On that note, if you like books about sports and facing fears, GUTLESS would be a great next read! Especially if you are a reader that has no qualms about facing facts and enjoys insight on topics, such as bullying, that are widely ignored at schools.

Fine sports fiction.
By J.Prather
I'm a big fan of Carl Deuker's sports fiction and feel that he has a unique voice and an uncanny ability to combine the excitement and suspense inherent in sports with some truly piercing real life situations. Gutless is a fast paced, searing look at bullying and will hook readers from the start with a cast of complex characters and some of Dueker's finest sports writing.

Brock is a young athlete dealing with an ailing father and searching for his place in a new high school, a new team and new friends. He worries about his own courage when he hesitates on the playing field and in the high school hallways. He's a boy afraid of contact and confrontation trying to succeed in a world where both are required. His relationship with his nerdy friend Richie is the highlight of the novel, and their dialogues are authentic and keep the pages turning. Brock foreshadows the ending pretty early on, so the reader knows something bad is going to happen, just not what it is. This creates so much suspense that it makes it hard to put this book down.

Soccer fans and football fans will find plenty to admire here. I love a good football story and nobody writes football quite like Carl Deuker. Reluctant readers will appreciate the fast pace and the short chapters. All sports fans will recognize the genuine emotions brought about by victory and painful loss. Teens dealing with their own drive to succeed and searching for their own path will also find much to relate to in Brock's struggles to prove that he's not gutless. It's a story of triumph over fear and learning how to do the right thing even when it doesn't seem to be the right thing at all.

Most of Deuker's books are laser focused, but this one wanders around a bit too much for my taste. The author took a few too many narrative side trips, especially in developing the Hunter character. So despite losing a star due to lack of focus, there's no denying this is a great read and an enthusiastic recommend.

The Widow's Journal: Questions to Guide You through Grief and Life Planning after the Loss of a Partner, by PhD, Carrie P. Freeman

This unique guided journal is designed to be a useful, caring gift for those whose husband, wife, or life partner has died within the last year. Losing a spouse or romantic partner causes a special kind of heartbreak, loneliness, and disappointment. Your plans for your life have irrevocably changed.
Because everyone mourns differently, guided journal writing is a useful tool for navigating the phases of grief in a personalized, private way. The Widow's Journal is written in a frank yet hopeful style by lifelong journaler Carrie P. Freeman, PhD, a communication professor, who set out to write the kind of book she could have used when, just prior to her thirtieth birthday, she lost her own husband to cancer.
Unlike other bereavement books, The Widow's Journal doesn't tell you what to do, it isn't a memoir or collection of other people's stories, and it isn't limited to any particular spiritual outlook. Instead it asks you over 100 guiding questions (from the practical to the profound) that you can use to progress through the grieving process, culminating in a collection of your most useful insights for reflection.
Freeman's thoughtful questions prompt you to reflect on your feelings, but more importantly, provide a gentle path toward productively coping with intense grief while making plans to build a meaningful new life.
This journal works like a guided diary or workbook, with beautifully decorated pages on which to write (and even color).
The book is a Foreword Review's 2015 INDIE FAB Book of the Year Award Finalist in the Grief & Grieving category.

The Widow's Journal Helps Deal With One's Grief
By Kenneth Landon
Losing a spouse is no fun so I am thankful for every thing that provides a help. Carrie Freeman's "The Widow's Journal" does that. This book is well organized and asks so many of the kinds of questions that we all need to deal with following a loss, but sometimes fail to address. Carrie suggest that you need to let your friends know what you need. My normal tendency is to keep everything inside. Following her advice has been helpful. Giving the reader plenty of space to write their feelings is very useful and Carrie's suggestion of always placing a date when the comment is written is also a very good idea. That way when you reread your comments you can both see if an issue has improved and how long it took the problem to change and/or improve. Thank you Carrie for helping me deal with my grief.

Reconcile: Conflict Transformation for Ordinary Christians, by John Paul Lederach

What if reconciliation is central to the biblical message?
And what if Christians are waking up to the reconciling mission of God?

Reconcile: Conflict Transformation for Ordinary Christians,by international mediator John Paul Lederach and with a foreword by Bill and Lynne Hybels, serves as a guidebook for Christians seeking a scriptural view of reconciliation and practical steps for transforming conflict.

Originally published as The Journey Toward Reconciliation and based on Lederach s work in war zones on five continents, this revised and updated book tells dramatic stories of what works and what doesn t in entrenched conflicts between individuals and groups. Lederach leads readers through stories of conflict and reconciliation in Scripture, using these stories as anchors for peacemaking strategies that Christians can put into practice in families and churches.

Lederach, who has written twenty-two books and whose work has been translated into more than twelve languages, also offers new lenses through which to view conflict, whether congregational conflicts or global terrorism. A new section of resources, created by mediation professionals, professors, and pastors, offers tools for understanding interpersonal, church, and global conflict, worship resources, books and websites for further study, and invitations to action in everyday life.

Review
~~"This book truly has the power to change the world. Extended family dispute? Read Reconcile. Neighborhood conflict? Read Reconcile. Church split? Read Reconcile. Countries at war? Honestly, if there were a way to lock up world leaders until they read Reconcile, the world would be a different place."…"Beware: though this book is biblically grounded and thoroughly practical, it is not safe. It will mess with your life." —Lynne and Bill Hybels, cofounders, Willow Creek Community Church, from foreword

"A profoundly moving and inspiring book! John Paul Lederbach’s call to all involved in the ministry of reconciliation "to dream boldly and to act with enthusiastic pragmatism", providing us with the Biblical tools as well as practical guidelines stemming from years’ of experience, merits to be taken seriously by pastors, students, and especially by practitioners in the field. In our Southern African context - as well as in the rest of fractured and divided world – the book will be of great value."—Piet Meiring, emeritus professor of Theology at the University of Pretoria, served on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Such a good, good book
By AngelaCarol
Such a good, good book. I was leery when I first picked it up because a lot of books like this are too deep and complicated for me to get through. Not so this one. It is very readable. While I am concerned about wars and conflicts I read about in the news, I am like most people, more concerned about my own relationships and the conflicts that arise there. This book is good for both. The author uses examples of conflict situations in the Bible, such as the one between Jacob & Esau, to help us better understand the reasons for conflict and also the methods to bring resolution and healing to such a situation. Its straightforward and practical. I highly recommend it for personal use and for group study.

This is not a book to leaving sitting on the shelf.
By Linda Brendle
After describing the horrifying evening when he was informed that his daughter was the target of a kidnapping plot aimed at undermining his peace building efforts in Costa Rica, John Paul Lederach wrote the following paragraph:

I can no longer take John 3:16 as a short formula for salvation. I can only understand it as a foundational principle of reconciliation. It is an ethic based on willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of an enemy. It is an ethic undergirded by and made possible only through the immeasurable love and grace of God.

This statement is pivotal to Lederach’s approach to conflict resolution which involves approaching your enemy in the hope of understanding him and finding common ground rather than attempting to force him into accepting your point of view.

When my son, Christian Piatt, first recommended this book to me, I told him it would probably be over my head. I’m a lazy intellectual, and I have to keep reference sources close at hand when reading a lot of what he reads, as well as some of what he writes. He assured me that Reconcile was written in a narrative style that makes it an enjoyable as well as an educational read. He was right. Lederach’s stories draw the reader into the personal lives of his own family and of those he has met in his ministry of reconciliation while also teaching how to find the truth, justice, mercy, and peace that are so lacking in our conflicted world.

I was further concerned that, since Lederach’s work is global in scope, his insights would have little practical application for a small-world person like me. While I am aware of the chaos that makes up the nightly news, and I attempt to vote and live in a responsible manner, my primary focus is geared more toward the people whose lives touch mine on a more personal level, both here in small town America and on the Internet where my life intersects with others through my writings and theirs. However, the path to conflict transformation outlined in Reconcile is applicable to individuals, churches, and workplace environments as well as an international setting.

Christian recently posted an interview with the author on his blog. Following is his last question and Lederach’s answer.

If you had one dream for the impact this book would have, what would it be?

That it provokes reflection and meaningful conversation that leads to taking a risk, maybe a small step, toward building better, more healthy relationships in and through the many conflicts life affords us.

This book is an interesting read but not an easy one. It’s not one to be scanned and put back on the shelf. Instead, it is a text to return to often, to meditate over, to share in a group study. If enough of us read, understand, and live these truths, perhaps Lederach’s dream will come true.

Powerful, personal stories from a life-long peace advocate
By E. Thomas
Amazing book. Insightful and practical. You really have to sit with this one for even as he is telling his own stories of real events (some rather harrowing) as a peacemaker/mediator, you have to decide what/how you are going to do it in your own life.

His "three steps to making an enemy" is powerful because we all do it, knowingly or unknowingly. Step 1 is Separate yourself from the person, see only the differences and not the commonalities. 2. See yourself as superior, not like the other person. 3. Dehumanize the other person, and deprive them of the qualities that make them human. That's an Rx for the Nazi's extermination of the Jews, POW camps and 100 of other historic events. And it's our action every time we demonize a mass murderer or anyone else we don't like.

This is a small book, but do not let that lure you into thinking it won't challenge your thinking. We did a sermon series on Peace at our Presbyterian church and people admitted that they were challenged by the call to be peacemakers when everyone's natural reaction to things done to them is to hate or be angry. That is all too easy. And Lederbach, who has dedicated his life to the promotion of peace, knows what he is talking about. Heck, he helped with peace talks with the Sandanistas in Nicaragua and lived to tell about it!

Knapsack Problems, by Hans Kellerer, Ulrich Pferschy, David Pisinger

Thirteen years have passed since the seminal book on knapsack problems by Martello and Toth appeared. On this occasion a former colleague exclaimed back in 1990: "How can you write 250 pages on the knapsack problem?" Indeed, the definition of the knapsack problem is easily understood even by a non-expert who will not suspect the presence of challenging research topics in this area at the first glance. However, in the last decade a large number of research publications contributed new results for the knapsack problem in all areas of interest such as exact algorithms, heuristics and approximation schemes. Moreover, the extension of the knapsack problem to higher dimensions both in the number of constraints and in the num ber of knapsacks, as well as the modification of the problem structure concerning the available item set and the objective function, leads to a number of interesting variations of practical relevance which were the subject of intensive research during the last few years. Hence, two years ago the idea arose to produce a new monograph covering not only the most recent developments of the standard knapsack problem, but also giving a comprehensive treatment of the whole knapsack family including the siblings such as the subset sum problem and the bounded and unbounded knapsack problem, and also more distant relatives such as multidimensional, multiple, multiple-choice and quadratic knapsack problems in dedicated chapters.

Review

From the reviews:

"The book explores the knapsack problem and its variants in 15 chapters … . On the whole, the authors present a rich amount of material, much of which belongs to the most recent advancement in the subject … . This self-contained monograph is a valuable addition to the existing literature on knapsack problems. It will certainly make an excellent reference for researchers in combinatorial optimization. … In this regard, the libraries in this field-should have a copy of this book on their shelves." (J Xue, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Vol. 56 (11), 2005)

"This book provides a comprehensive overview of the methods for solving KP, its variants and generalizations. … By presenting a range of algorithmic techniques, this book is also a suitable tool for studying modern algorithms. … With its more than 500 references and its author and subject indexes, this book will be a valuable tool for many researchers in combinatorial optimization." (Peter Butkovic, Mathematical Reviews, 2006 d)

"This book presents a large number of new results for knapsack problems, especially related to exact and approximate (heuristic) algorithms. Moreover, many modifications and extensions of the knapsack problem are treated. To do this, the authors found and consequently used a close connection between manifold contents and a clear, stimulating presentation. … With an introduction into NP-completeness of knapsack problems a monograph ends, which spans the range from a comprehensive introduction to the most recent and advanced results very nicely." (Jrgen Khler, OR Spectrum, Issue 27, 2005)

"The book starts with a basic introduction to the knapsack problem … . It proceeds with a discussion about the basic techniques available for the solution to this problem, which makes it useful reading for undergraduate students of computer science, mathematics and economics. … In conclusion, it could be said that the book is a valuable source for students, but also for researchers interested in this problem." (K. Šoric, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1103 (5), 2007)
