A Great Read

This was my first Johathan Kellerman novel, and I approached it with hesitation. I'm not a big fan of "whodunits" or detective stories (I prefer other kinds of thrillers, stuff like the early John Grisham). And after the first few chapters I thought I made a mistake buying the book... but then the story and the characters started getting more interesting, and at some point it became really hard to put the book down (or turn it off, since I was listening to it on tape). After finishing it I feel like it was a great read. The plot is developed very well and there are great characters. The protagonist (the boy) is brought to life with great intelligence and credibility, and it's impossible not to like him. I think this a book that both fans of detective stories and readers who don't care too much for the genre but appreciate a good thriller with interesting characters will really enjoy.

This book was an unexpected surprise.

I have read all of the Kellerman books when they first came out in hardback but when he drifted from the Alex D. books I figured that this would be another one of those off beat books that authors write because they get tired of writing the same characters all of the time. I also had my doubts about a 12 year old outwitting adults and living on his own on the street. So I didn't buy it. I was finally given a copy in paperback and read it. Was I surprised. The book held my interest from start to finish and I think it ranks up there with some of his best books. The book isn't just about a 12 year old but has a wealth of characters. Throughout the book you get to know all of these characters and how they interact. I recommend it highly.

Pretty good, but flawed

Billy Straight is probably the 5th or 6th Kellerman novel I've read and I'd have to say it's not one of my favorites. Overall, I enjoyed it but I thought it was a bit slow. As I was getting toward the end, I had to fight the temptation to skip to the last page and find out if I was right about who the killer was. I also thought the grandmother character was unnecessary. Her presence felt "tacked on" and contrived to give Billy someplace to go. I enjoy Kellerman's books enormously, but this one could have used a little editing.
