Barb Scholz and her children, ages six and eight, became survivors of suicide when husband-father, Troy, took his own life on a mid-winter day in January 1995. The ensuing years provided an involuntary crash course in coping with a confused world of questions, guilt, remorse, rebuilding - surviving. Horrible for almost any survivor of a suicide

If you are in a relationship that is failing and about to end it and the other person commits suicide because you are leaving them then buy this book. Otherwise if you truely loved the person who died and are looking for comfort or guidance then this book will not help you. This is one woman's account of her failing marriage and how her husbands suicide affected her and how she was able to pull together to help her children get through the suicide. There is no help for the vast majority of people who truely do love the person who has been tragically taken their lives. It's a selfish view of how one person was able to move on with her life after spending years in a loveless relationship.

Twenty-five scroll saw experts, sixty scroll saw projects - this is a scrollers dream come true. For a book that is largely made up of the contributions from twenty-five scroll saw experts, the Big Book of Scroll Saw Woodworking hangs together remarkably well. The editors have done an admirable job of pulling it together into a coherent book. The book focuses on the scroll saw and its many uses. The introductory sections are good and to the point. They cover topics like selecting materials, working with patterns, scroll saw tips and blade selection. The book begins with the simplest of projects and moves through projects of increasing difficulty to very advanced fretwork projects, along with working with metals and synthetics like Corian . Each project comes with a brief introduction including suggestions for materials and tools, tips on the use of the saw, planning the project, finishing, and so on. The accompanying photographs and exploded diagrams are very helpful and scaled down plans are provided. The book includes sixty-plus projects which range from fretwork, intarsia and segmentation, inlay and relief, baskets and boxes, puzzles and toys, portraits, and working with non-woods like Corian and metal. Among the projects that can be made are Christmas tree ornaments, decorative boxes, a chess set, earrings, salt & pepper shakers, note cards, a corner shelf, and animal and human portraits. If there is one thing that I would have liked to have seen in the book, it would be a discussion of the selection of the scroll saw itself. Having once had an inexpensive scroll saw and now having a better one, they are like night and day. My current saw is a joy to use, while my first one would make some of these projects much more challenging than they need be. That quibble aside, for the reader wishing to explore the world of scroll sawing, this is a good place to start.

Great instructional book

Being new to scroll sawing, I appreciate the fact that this book has lots of pictures, diagrams and detailed instructions. It explains techniques, tips and tricks from project beginning to finish in easy to follow language. It also includes a lot of great patterns that go from simple to very detailed. If you're new to scroll sawing, I highly recommend this book. I believe skilled scroll saw workers will find useful information in this book as well.

This is a great book. I wasn't sure if I should get it, because I couldn't find any reviews anywhere. I decided to go for it, because it was written by the people at scroll saw magazine. I'm glad I did. I've only read the first chapter so far with basic "how to" info. I'm already seeing a huge improvement in my projects. I'm getting smoother cuts and crisper corners, and doing it at a faster pace. I can't wait to do some of the projects they provide. The only improvement I would suggest is making it spiral bound for easier photo-copying of the patterns.

Big Book of Scroll Saw Woodworking

This book is a compilation of many things and seems to be an introduction into scroll sawing. It starts off with basic information about scroll saws, blades, wood types etc. aimed at the first time scroll saw user. The patterns range from simple to moderately complex. There is a lot for the novice to learn in the book but do not expect to be able to do all of the projects for quite a long time. Many of the projects are far too difficult for a novice. The book would be much better if it were more focused on a single skill level.

Packed full of quality information

This is a great book that gives detailed information about numerous gemstones. Each stone has a write-up of it's history, location and identification. A side box provides scientific information such as specific gravity, cleavage, class, etc. Clear pictures help with identification. There are also sections on gem enhancement, collecting, and lapidary. It is nice to have this little book packed with so much information on hand for reference. I continually pick it up and refer to it, and often just enjoy paging through. Very well written for the amateur, or serious gem collector.

I loved this book. It shows pictures next to the name of the stone. This tells what cut they would do for each stone. This would be a book that I would tell someone just starting to collect or someone even taking class to get. It goes into detail on each stone. Its just a good book.

Over the past two decades, a new man-made domain of conflict has materialized. Alongside armed conflict in the domains of land, sea, air, and space, hostilities between different types of political actors are now taking place in cyberspace. This volume addresses the challenges posed by cyberspace hostility from theoretical, political, strategic and legal perspectives. In doing so, and in contrast to current literature, cyber-security is analysed through a multidimensional lens, as opposed to being treated solely as a military or criminal issues, for example. The individual chapters map out the different scholarly and political positions associated with various key aspects of cyber conflict and seek to answer the following questions: do existing theories provide sufficient answers to the current challenges posed by conflict in cyberspace, and, if not, could alternative approaches be developed?; how do states and non-state actors make use of cyber-weapons when pursuing strategic and political aims?; and, how does the advent of conflict in cyberspace challenge our established legal framework? By asking important strategic questions on the theoretical, strategic, ethical and legal implications and challenges of the proliferation of cyber warfare capabilities, the book seeks to stimulate research into an area that has hitherto been neglected.

A highly recommended read !

Wow, a very thorough book for windows phone developers! I liked the overall style and presentation of the book. If you are just starting off with windows phone development and have a good background in C# & XAML then the book will prove a valuable asset in your quest to become an app developer. As this book cover the internal of windows phone development, prior knowledge of a .NET language and XAML is highly recommended. The book starts off with a background on the architecture and vision of windows phone. This information is very important as this will be the founding stone in your journey. It then deals with the app model, navigation, UI design, web connection and how to retrieve and play around with the device and its media services etc. These are very interesting chapters which help you familiarize yourself with the landscape of app development.

There is a separate part in the book that discusses the migration from windows phone 7 to 8. It is very helpful for existing programs that need migration to the new OS. The same section also discusses how to create/work with live tiles, retrieve and work around the calendar/photos/maps etc. I enjoyed working with tiles/notification as this has been a differentiating area for windows from other mobile platforms.

Part 3 of the books is all about new features of windows phone 8. It teaches how to make use of the wallet feature as well as how to work around speech functionality of the phone. It explains in detail how app developers can make money by using the AdControl. Afterall, the very purpose of app development is to make some pocket change. You can learn to create apps for your company, if your company allows to do so.

The last part of the books is for die-hard fans of doing native (unmanaged) development using C++ and pointers.
I wished they have more in-depth coverage of games development as this is one area I'd like to explore more. Maybe the next edition will take care of this.
Overall, this is a book that dives down deep into the internals of win phone 8 development with a no-nonsense approach. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and will repeat as many times during my dev endeavors.

I give this book a two-thumbs up and a 5 star rating. And for sure, I will recommend the book to my fellow developers. Buy it and reap the benefit from its vast treasure of knowledge.

Very Good Windows Phone 8 learning book (not 8.1)

Of all the Win Phone 8 books I checked out, this the one book I purchased and it has been a valuable resource for my getting up to speed on writing windows phone 8 apps. I purchased the kindle version and kept it by my side while writing my first app.

Pros: The author does a great job of explaining the concepts and seems to have a good understanding of windows phone 8 sdk.

Cons: Most of the sample code is what I would call bare minimum to get the authors point across. Meaning, to write a good and fully functioning app according to MS guidelines there is much for research you need to do on the windows phone sdk and sample web sites. I feel, for the price of the book, the author could have created more in depth sample with detailed explanations. For example, hid Background Audio Player sample use static audio files and does not explain how to setup and use a playlist or to change media files in a play, or how to effectively communicate with the background audio agent.. In writing my own Background Audio Agent, I spent weeks researching other web sites and sample trying to come up with a clean way to handle BAP and APP communication.

However, I am looking forward to an 8.1 update or revision of this book. I hope Andrew considers writing an update with explanation and sample for ALL the new 8.1 SDK code.

Disorganized disaster.

Tell me. Why do authors splatter their code all over the book and expect the reader to organize them?

For a reader trying to decipher and learn, that is a lot of needless work.

In this book, the author inexplicably combines his code samples (for example programs) with his example code (to reiterate his coding points). So the reader is left trying to put together various pieces of code which are code samples vs example code. Trust me, separating them is not easy, even if you understand C# fairly well.

To me, I spent far more time trying to organize the code than trying to learn them. What a waste of time that was.

To the author(s), please do the readers a favor and put all your codes in one continuous format. So provide the XAML and the Silverlight code in one continuous and coherent format. And please do separate your code samples that reiterates coding points into a totally separate format. That way, the reader is never left guessing whether the code you provide are code samples or example code.

Pros:
1)Author does seem to have good expertise on Windows Phone 8.

Cons:
1)Disorganized mishmash of code samples (for sample programs) and example code (codes that reiterates author's points). The reader is often left guessing which one is which.
2)Needs to provide more sample programs (in organized fashion).

About the Author
Jock Sturges received a B.A. in Perceptual Psychology and Photography from Marlboro College in Vermont and an M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has exhibited widely in the United States as well as in France and Japan. His photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.

Beautiful and moving

Sturges does it again. Much like his previous Misty Dawn, this photo essay follows the model from a young age, on through adulthood. It's fascinating to see the girl, the coltish teen, and the full flower of womanhood emerge over the course of years. As with Sturges's other collections, these aren't just photos of some model. They document a friend and his friendship - starting with Fanny's question about why there weren't pictures of her.

As an adult, this lovely woman has a strong, distinctive look - a defined jaw that adds strength to femininity. Looking backwards in time, I was fascinated to see how early this feature became apparent, how the adult started to appear in the child. So, this works very well as a photo-biography. But it also works as a study in figuure photo, presented with warmth and sensitivity in a beautifully printed format. If you're not already familiar with Sturges's work, there's plenty to choose from - but the could be a good start.

The Golden Age of Jock Sturges

Sturges’ work has always been about the passage of time - moments captured from the lives of key collaborators as they age and evolve, beginning as blank slates and gradually, slowly, book after book, making their inexorable way towards adulthood. There is real pathos in this, and this is the ultimate value that I draw from Sturges’ work. Working in close year after year, decade after decade, his captured images are like brushstrokes in much larger works than can only now be fully appreciated. The fragmented nature of his previous publications - a few new pictures of this or that person, then jump ahead a few years to the next book and do it again - were interesting, and the stunning technical specs of his large-format portraits never less than beautiful (although my opinion is that the shots themselves sometimes bordered on the pedestrian), but they always seemed somehow too diffuse, too abrupt. A person picking up one of his books without the context of the others would likely see random nude photos of random nude people, a shallow representation of what Sturges work is about (but what attracts the most notoriety).

That all ended with "Misty Dawn: Portrait of a Muse," his first work devoted to just one subject. Finally, a lifetime of collaboration could be appreciated for what it was - a record of moments pulling ever forward. The trend continues with "Fanny," another publication dedicated to moments captured over 22 years in the life of one subject. Fanny has graced the cover of a previous Sturges overview, and has appeared in book after book, always recognizable, somehow universal, but also removed, protected from the outside world by the insular naturist community in France in which Sturges does a large amount of his work. I was delighted, then, to read Sturges' prelude to "Fanny," which lays out in very immediate terms a biographical sketch of the girl (now woman). There are revelations that suddenly lend every image in this book - and all previous images of Fanny - real gravity. Here, Sturges displays more than bodies - he shows a glimpse of heart and mind, as well, and the impact is incredibly powerful.

I think Sturges power as a photographer lies in his ability to put his subjects so at ease that they cease to be anything contrived in front of the camera, and simply become themselves. For most of his models, he is like family, and that comfort comes through clearly in the body of work he continues to add to summer after summer. The power in the images lies with the models, not really with the photographer (a sentiment I think Sturges would agree with), as Sturges images have rarely been overly fussy or composed - just moments he happened to be privy to, and have the good fortune to capture with his camera. He is able to make us see his models as he sees them, as regular, beautiful people. Beautiful because they are regular, and because they are alive.

Sturges seems to have entered a "golden age" in his career, where the work he has been creating for decades can now finally be seen as the immersive documents they really are, as opposed to mere snippets. I hope for many more of these single-subject overviews in the years to come. That is what Sturges' work is all about, and that is where it shines. Sturges explains a bit of his methods of working with Fanny in his introduction, and he explains that, although the work was created over a span of 22 years, Fanny didn't pose for him as often as you would think, and this volume represents almost everything they created together. That it is not a cherry-picked "best of" actually works in the book's favor, as many of the shots come across as more casual than what you would expect from a Sturges book. I think this works in the book's favor, as it even further underscores the nature of the collaboration, the reality of a friendship between two people, and gives a more natural overview of maturation and the passage of time.

By far the deepest, most personal, and most affecting of Sturges' books, "Fanny" is an easy recommendation for anyone curious about Sturges or his work. Literally a lifetime in the making, it is human existence on a personal, yet somehow universal scale.

WOW - went to an opening for Jock Sturges Friday April 10th, 2015 at the PHOTOEYE Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. Spoke with Jock for quite a while about Fanny the book/the person. What an amazing man he is, and what a treasure the book is. Moving, thoughtful, caring and all seen through Jock Sturges' eyes/camera which tells us much about the man. What an amazing experience it was to have had such meaningful conversation with this remarkable man; I felt blessed when he gave me a book, and signed and wrote a quote for me. Seeing his beautiful work in the size intended, under good lighting was quite awe inspiring as well, which is why I was there. If are considering purchasing this book, just do it. It is some of his best work.
