About the Author
Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., the first U.S. theologian named to the College of Cardinals, is known both nationally and internationally as a preeminent Catholic scholar, teacher, and theologian. He lives in New York City and holds the McGinley Professorship of Religion and Society at Fordham University. His writings over the past half-century have helped to shape the face of theological reflection in the post-Vatican II Church.

Outstanding overview of concepts in ecclesiology

Ecclesiology is the study and theory of what the Christian Church constitutes. Dulles presents several "models" which illustrate various aspects of the what Church is like. In one sense, it's an earthly institution, a formal organization of people with specific roles and responsibilities, lay and clergy. Complicating this picture is the reality that Christianity has fractured over the centuries into a variety of denominations, institutionally separate from each other.
In another sense, the Church is a mystical communion or fellowship of people with shared beliefs. In this model, the institution takes a secondary role, being formed to provide shape and support to this body of people. According to a third model, the Church is a sacrament, an instrument bridging the gap between earthly and divine, a conduit for divine grace to humanity. In a fourth model, the Church is a herald, charged with proclaiming the Christian message to the world, and reinforcing it among believers. In a fifth model, the Church is a servant, responsible for encouraging good works and helping those in need. Dulles says that many more models can be discussed, but he sees these as the most basic ones.
Dulles does not claim to write for the lay (in the sense of non-academic, rather than non-clergy) reader, but this book actually is in clear, concise, non-technical prose that nearly anyone should grasp. While Dulles himself is a Roman Catholic, he gives the perspectives of Protestant and Orthodox Christians a full and fair hearing; this book definitely is not a defense of an "official" Roman Catholic viewpoint. In fact, he points out how Rome's "official" views became increasingly more nuanced, even in the years befor Vatican II.
Avery Dulles, by the way, is the son of former Secretary of State (under Eisenhower) John Foster Dulles, was raised a Presbyterian, became an agnostic by his teens, turned into a religious "seeker" while an undergrad at Harvard, then entered the Roman Catholic Church and later the Jesuit order after graduating. This personal journey clearly lends some perspective to his work. Dulles recently was named a cardinal, in recognition of his work as a theologian. This is a most unusual honor for someone who is neither a bishop nor a key leader in church government.

An honest appraisal of 5 Church models

Just based on the number of sentences I've underlined, "Models of the Church" is one of the most logical and readable books about Catholic ecclesiology that I have every read. Cardinal Avery Dulles lays out the pros and cons for 5 model of the Church -- Church as Institution, Mystical Communion, Sacrament, Herald and Servant. Later he looks at the Church as a Community of Disciples. The models are evaluated on their basis in Scripture, their link to Catholic traditional teaching (including Vatican II) and their resonance with the modern world. Dulles' presentation is thoroughly sane and "unchurchy", describing the pros and cons of each model fairly and honestly. Dulles also examines each model in light of its approach to eschatology, revelation and its ecumenical fitness.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants an honest look at a variety of valid means for imaging the Church. Dulles is the kind of Catholic churchman who is certain enough of his faith that he is willing to judge his Church dispassionately, letting let the chips fall where they may.

Thought Provoking And Understandable

For those of you who have an interest in theology, but have little formal training in the discipline, I am your reviewer. "Models of the Church" provides the general reader with a work which is thought provoking but, with some effort, understandable.

Cardinal Dulles begins this book with an outline of five models of the Church: Institution; Mystical Communion; Sacrament; Herald; and Servant. The Institution Model emphasizes the visible structure of the Church. The Mystical Union emphasizes its unity as the People of God joined together in Him. The Sacrament emphasizes the Church's role as a mediator of grace. As Herald, the Church proclaims the Word of God. As Servant, it exists to serve God's people. In each section the model is explained and the strengths and weaknesses are examined.

After explaining the models, Cardinal Dulles how each shape the view of the Church's relationship to Eschatology, other Churches, the Ministry, Revelation and the discernment of the True Church. He then wraps it all up in his model as the Church as the Community of Disciples.

I think that this book will help me understand the Church and its different aspects. As I contemplate the mystery of the Church, I will have some guidance in how to go about it. It can do the same for you.

Two Down... I Think I'll Go for a Third

At first I thought I'd just read the first book in the series to satisfy my curiosity. After all, I'd heard about the "Wheel of Time" for quite a while. I had mixed feelings about Book One, but, after reading Book Two I'm getting into the story more. Character development is critical to my enjoyment of a story -- especially one so long as the WOT. I'm pleased to report that even though many of them remain sketchy, Jordan is certainly developing the characters more. Further, many of Jordan's characters start out young and naive. Through the course of the story, those characters grow up. I like that.

Finally, I think the writing is consistently good. Occasionally, Jordan will come up w/ a phrase or a description that is elegant and striking. Those gems are worth noticing.

I have read some reviews that criticize this series as being too derivative of the "Lord of the Rings," and I think I understand that complaint. I do see similarities, and some of them are unfortunate. At the same time, the concept of an epic battle between Good and Evil transcends the LOTR, so it seems a bit unrealistic to write this series off because of places where the WOT veers a bit closer than I'd like.

In particular, I think Jordan's main characters are quite distinct from Tolkien's. And more to the point, the battle in WOT is between the Hero and the Face of Evil (capitalized here because they represent archetypes). OTOH, in the LOTR, the main thread of the story focuses on the destruction of an artifact. So, at this point at least, I see more than enough distinction between the stories to hold my interest.

So I guess I'll give Book Three a try.

Good book in a GREAT series.

Second novel in one of the greatest series ever written. Not the best in the series, but not the worst either. If you've read the first and you are considering continuing, you really should. If you haven't read the first, start with "The Eye of the World". As one progresses through the series more and more characters are added which may be daunting for new readers of fantasy, but all the characters stories are interesting and move the plot along nicely.

Names of places and people can be confusing for those not used to fantasy writing, but the author conveniently provides a pronunciation guide at the end of the novel that can easily be referenced (although the presence of such a thing is telling in-and-of itself).

This series as a whole has everything one could wish for from high fantasy: action, magic, politics, history, relationships, character growth, triumph, betrayal, hope, tragedy, comedy. Not as dark as A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), not as light as Narnia, not as magical as Harry Potter, not as political as Malazan, and not as historical as Lord of the Rings. However, what this series accomplishes is a blend of all of these in a masterful work of art that is unrivaled in balance across themes.

RIP Robert Jordan, may your work be preserved from the turning of the wheel to delight future generations, time without end.

Character and story development unbelievable

5 star rating bc of ability to develop characters and connect what seem to be a "neverending" story. I find myself wanted to dive back into this fantasy world multiple times a day. Lan, Nynaeve, Minnesota, and Loial are my favorite characters. Although it seems cliche to say, these are a mixture of every single fantasy book or story I have read and combined all in one book.

I asked my friend for a recommendation for a book, and one specifically that hadn't been made into a movie. I've read a movie was once supposed to be made for Wheel of Time, but efforts were unsuccessful. Although a movie is enticing, there is really no need to ruin such a magical story. Amazing books! I recommend to everyone who loves sci-fi, fantasy.

Tyranny repeats itself

This book is a description of the habits of dictators over the ages and around the world, written in the form of a how-to guide for a would-be autocrat. (Something like The Prince but taken even further down the road of brazen scheming.)

Some of the play-by-play about power grabs will be (sadly) familiar for anyone who pays attention to international news, but there is plenty of real insight into the habits and eccentricities of dictators. Wood and DeLuca point out, for example, that autocrats tend to associate themselves with deceased national heroes, to the point of actual exhumation of bodies in some cases. There is also a list of crackpot dictatorial ideas that have recurred throughout the decades, such as forced migration and misguided wars.

The material of the book ranges from the grave (such as psychopathic torture methods employed by various dictators) to the humorous (such as advice on picking a nickname: Great Leader and Dear Leader are helpful; The Goat, not).

The Dictator's Handbook is exhaustively footnoted and boasts a bibliography of a stunning 502 works cited, everything from a history of Sparta to very recent news of Hungary's Viktor Orban. BE A DICK! Guide for tyrants and dictators is well-researched, informative, and funny

You just took over your country in a nearly bloodless coup, you've declared martial law, clamped down on the press, "disappeared" your main opposition, but you can't remember what comes next? What's a budding despot to do?

If you are prepared, you'll crack open your well-thumbed copy of THE DICTATOR'S HANDBOOK: A PRACTICAL MANUAL FOR THE ASPIRING TYRANT, by Randall Wood and Carmine DeLuca (Gull Pond Books, 2012), which helped get you this far, and see what comes next.

For starters, cripple the protest movement, advocate a national ideology, and establish a cult of personality -- start by building a few larger-than-life flattering statues and monuments of yourself. Check. Check. Check. Check.

Author Randall Wood was inspired to write this book after spending several decades living and working abroad in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

"Time and time again," he says, "when the media would report some new political atrocity" in his current host country -- Nicaragua, Benin, Indonesia, Senegal -- "I would mutter, `Well, that's a move straight out of the Dictator's Handbook.' If I said to myself, `Next, the president will insist on constitutional reform,' I was too frequently right."

Only thing is, there was no Dictator's Handbook. So Wood and DeLuca wrote one.

Their handbook, however, was no quickly-spun spoof or skinny gift book. It offers "step-by-step autocracy" and a rich, meticulously-organized, well-researched (there are more than 500 references in the end notes) nonfiction backdrop of history, world politics, and humor.

Not only do the authors use current examples of off-kilter autocrats from today's world stage (I'm looking at you, Daniel!), but they also delve deeply into the history of the potentate--all the way back to the world's first dictator, Roman leader Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator. Read this book to learn, laugh, and, of course, to figure out what comes next in your efforts to rule your nation with a velvet-gloved iron fist.

I first met Randy Wood in Granada, Nicaragua, in a cramped hotel room in 1998 where we had our Peace Corps trainee orientation. He and I went on to co-edit the Peace Corps Nicaragua quarterly magazine, �Va Pu�!, and then coauthor the first fully comprehensive guidebooks to traveling and living in Nicaragua, which we wrote and updated for more than 12 years (MOON NICARAGUA and LIVING ABROAD IN NICARAGUA, both Avalon Travel). In short, Randy is a hell of a writer and Dictator's Handbook is a truly impressive project. Get it. Read it. Then get back to work and repress somebody.

Enough tips to suppress any uprising!

"The Dictator's Handbook" has become my go-to guide for crushing the spirit of my ungrateful subjects. It's all here....propaganda tips, which public utilities are best to cut when the populace seems ungrateful, how to keep your pimp hand strong with your harem, selling poppy to the West in exchange for rocket launchers ...I could go on and on. Next to Leonard Maltin's exhaustive movie guide, this is my primary bathroom reading.
