I am using this book for a class I am currently enrolled in at University of Arkansas and even though I received an edition different than the one pictured, it had the same exact material in it whenever comparing it to one at the university bookstore. Have no fear.

It gives particular focus to the tactical applications of these weapons in combat, and how they compared to firearms wielded by their German opponents. With numerous first-hand combat accounts, and detailed technical explanations, this book is ideal for both the general reader and the firearms enthusiast.

The submachine gun (SMG) came to be the embodiment of the Soviet fighting spirit during World War II. From 1943 the Red Army's preference for close-quarters combat resulted in entire infantry units being equipped with nothing but SMGs. By deploying multiple SMG-armed companies and battalions, the Red Army was able to develop ferocious firepower in urban warfare and position assaults, the soldiers keeping within the SMG's effective range of about 150m to nullify the German skills in armoured and manoeuvre warfare, artillery support and aerial bombardment.

Three particular designs dominated the war. First came the PPD-40, a weapon initially designed in the 1930s but rationalized for more efficient production in 1940. This 7.62mm firearm, with a cyclic rate of 800rpm, was in production until 1941, when it was replaced by the defining Soviet SMG of the war - the PPSh-41. Here was a weapon perfectly suited to wartime conditions. It was rugged, cheap to produce, simple to operate and delivered devastating close-quarters firepower. The story of the Soviet wartime SMG is completed by the PPS, designed for even cheaper and faster production, first put into small-scale production inside the besieged city of Leningrad in 1942. This remarkable weapon never replaced the PPSh-41, however, possibly as much because of political as production considerations. Both the PPSh-41 and PPS went on to post-war service with various communist states, seeing combat in the Korean War, the Indochina and Vietnam Wars and various colonial insurgencies in Africa and Asia.

Chris McNab is an author and editor specializing in military history and military technology. To date he has published more than 40 books, including A History of the World in 100 Weapons (2011), Deadly Force (2009) and Tools of Violence (2008). He is the contributing editor of Hitler's Armies: A History of the German War Machine 1939-45 (2011) and Armies of the Napoleonic Wars (2009). Chris has also written extensively for major encyclopedia series, magazines and newspapers, and he lives in South Wales, UK. The author lives in South Wales, UK.

Excellent account of the development of Soviet submachine guns of WW II. The book not only describes the development and tactical uses of the weapons, but it also compares them to the principal German weapons that were used against them in the multitude of infantry attacks in the war. It then continues to describe their use in foreign (mostly Soviet-aligned) armies after World War II.

I really like these books. In my opinion, they are a great value for the money. they are an overview of the guns and as such is exactly what I want - an overview. If you want a detailed, in depth study, don't buy these books. If you want to know the basics with some breakdowns and good photos, you will be very pleased for the money.

i used this book a handful of times with our son, but didn't find it to be particularly priceless. i could have gone without purchasing it & been just fine. this is great for people who really like detailed instruction. it lays out your lessons & pairs the textbook & workbook (& homework) nicely right there for you. if you can afford it, buy it. it's nice to have on hand, but if you're strapped for cash, it's not essential.

Fun Transmedia Series

The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan is the first in a new trans-media series that connects books, clues, and website experiences together. Amy and Dan Cahill are at the center of a mystery adventure reminiscent of the DaVinci Code book and National Treasure movies. The two children are competing with powerful and influential family members to find clues leading to what's been described as the greatest treasure of all time. Woven through the books are historical references, mathematical problems, and intriguing puzzles that will eventually lead to a solution.

The quirky characters and fast pace make this book a quick, interesting read. The accompanying website is an element sure to draw in reluctant readers.

The focus on history and puzzles reminds me of the books of Blue Balliett.

One book down, just thirty-eight to go. This series will keep people of all ages reading for years to come.

Can't wait to read the next one

The Cahill family is divided into four main lines, descendants from the four children hundreds of years ago. These four branches of the family tree do not get along with each other. Especially now after the death of the Cahill matriarch.
At the reading of the will, 44 relatives were each given the choice of taking one million dollars or the ability to search for 39 clues that would lead one of them to the family secret and unimaginable power.
It is now a high stakes race to find and decipher the clues with lots of backstabbing, sabotaging, and dirty tricks.
The good guys are very likable and the puzzles and clues to clues are fun.
I read there are supposed to be ten books in all. But by the end of this book they are on their way to finding only the second clue. At this rate I don't see how they will get all 39 in only 10 books. I hope later books won't feel rushed.

I'm a school librarian so I've known about 39 clues since the beginning but never read the series. It's a cool idea to have different authors write each book in the series. I stumbled across Book #1 written by Rick Riordan (LIGHTNING THIEF, great author) for a great price so I added it to my cart to get the free shipping. I'm just now listening to it. I'm hooked. How fun to be at the beginning of a great series that already has 11 books, a supplemental 12th book and a new series to continue the story. I'll never have to wait for the next book to be published.

Great for anyone who loves playing the melody line on a ukulele

I love playing the melody line with my tenor ukulele, so this book is perfect. I've marked it down one star only because most of the arrangements are rather simple; I would like a little more chord melody flair. I'm also marking it down because they left out "Anakin's Theme," which has a beautiful melody (even though "The Phantom Menace" movie isn't highly regarded).

G. Willow Wilson is the author of the graphic novels Cairo, named a Best Graphic Novel of the Year by PW and Comics Worth Reading; Air, nominated for an Eisner Award, and Vixen, winner of the Glyph Comics Fan Award for Best Comic.
