Great book to own

Hats off to the authors for taking the time to lay out the horrific details of this crime. It's a shame the police did not do more. Great book to own, it's one of the worlds most fascinating cases that is still talked about 35 years later.

Gone but not Forgotten

We met the authors at a recent horror meet in San Francisco at the legendary Castro Theater, and they mentioned that they were school teachers drawn to a horrific crime of the early 1980s and they had made a documentary of the case. I never heard of it before, and wondered if it was some sort of viral marketing ploy to draw attention to a fictional story a la the Blair Witch project. No, they insisted, it was for real. Because they were school teachers I believed them, though the Lord knows I've been fooled by plenty of schoolteachers in the past and I wonder if they are more likely to be reliable than any other class of human being.

Anyway I'm inclined to think this story a true one, if only because the crime seems so pointless and ultimately depressing. The mystery I think is how on earth did the killer (or killers) managed to kill the adult woman and the two teen boys without being seen or heard by anyone else living within earshot, especially the other family members in the very next room?

The haunting thing is that the one girl, Tina, disappeared and nobody really seemed to care--taken away by the killer? I wondered why there are no photos of the place in which--

SPOILERS:

--in which her skull was later found, under a waterfall. Why not have a few photos of the site, if you have photos of everything else? I wondered also about the crime scene photos and how fake they look and about what is missing from them.

SPOILERS OVER.

All in all it is a beautifully done book with just the hint of being played with in the service of a thrill. And if the case is a true one, then it is a remarkable monument to the memory of two strong families bound up together in a legacy of healing and resolve. PS, the authors say that Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler in THE STRANGERS was inspired by the events of the Keddie murders, but they don't make this claim in the book itself, and it's easy to see why. I'd recommend it, but only to those with an open mind and a taste for the gruesome and disturbing.

The second time I read this book it was right before bed. Needless to say, I just couldn't fall asleep. I kept thinking about these people and what they had gone through. Not just the ones who died but their surviving family members. This case needs to be solved... I am praying that it does.

that copy, found one here on Amazon. This is one of the best books on religious
science that is out there, even though it isn't touted as that. It's very

THIS BOOK ROCKS !!!

I have the original 1960 clothbound edition of this classic, which i obtained for .50 at a thrift store about a year ago and treasure it as the greatest mind power/life-altering book (other than the Bible)that I have EVER read. I've been reading self-help,motivational,positive thinking books for over 30 years now and by far this is my favorite and the one that I feel has done me the most good. It's such a simple, yet profound read without a lot of mumbo-jumbo that can often dilute the true meaning of a message.
I love the part when he tells of how at 30 or so he was physically and mentally an old man and then how his whole life was dramatically changed for the better after discovering the techniques and principles which you too can discover and implement into your's. Believe me, you won't regret purchasing this masterpiece. Sure it's 50 years old, but the Laws & Principles of Life never change, just like the Truths found in the Bible. Read this book every single day of your life and prepare for a MAJOR transformation! It's that good.

Great Introduction to Film Making

As an amateur just starting to get serious about turning my "home movies" into something people actually WANT to watch, I searched for a long time to find an introductory book that not only told you HOW to do things, but WHY you should do them.
After many disappointments, I found this book. While some of the references (script girl is particularly amusing) are very dated, the text mainly covers technique and avoids technology.
The illustrations and printing style point quite obviously to the book's mid-60s origin. An introduction by someone who remembers what it was like to shoot film in 1908 and knew D.W. Griffith personally should tip you off immediately that this book is something special. Still, the illustrations are clear and help illustrate the text's points very well.
In spite of what many recent amateur (and professional) film makers think, technology does not make your film good, it just makes it easy. TECHNIQUE makes it good. And that's what this book teaches in a very clear, readable, and understandable way.
Very highly recommended if you've had your fill of general introductory texts and are looking for real instruction and explanation for how to actually MAKE a film.

A stilll relivant clasic

While some of the references are somewhat dated the techniques this book promotes are still valid and useful. Some are now fashionable to flaunt like crossing views, but this makes some TV unwatchable because its jolting.

The concept to protecting shots seems to have been lost in the video world as an editor I find this much more useful that the so-called coverage junk that I often have to deal with. Reshooting exactly the same scene from the same POV 13 times is NOT useful coverage! The editor needs ways to cut around mistakes and build up scenes by mix and match to do this he needs well thought out shooting not endless repetitions.

If everyone who wants to be a director would read and pay attention to this book film and video quality would improve immensely!

While this book is an essential read for directors, DPs and cameramen; I would highly recommend it to gaffers, grip and sound guys.

An Essential Reference

I film youtube videos and wanted to learn more about cinematography. The book is about cinematography in a time when digital cameras and home studios didn't really exist. The book goes into great details about the basics of cinematography and skills that you can put into place immediately. The authors tone throughout the book is very conversational and I had a great time reading it. If you're new to cinematography I would start here first.

Best Book I've Read on Aging Gracefully

In my mid-forties, I'm committed to aging well. I've seen how so many in our culture age, and I'm committed to do better, not just physically, but emotionally, as well. For me, a big part of that shift is ensuring that my mind-space is in a good place, and that largely translates (again, for me) into not trying to chase the fountain of youth, but rather, for celebrating the gift of years, and for being my best self at this given moment in my life history, wherever that may be. This book? Is such a gift in that respect. I've read a number of books on aging now, and this has been one of the most beautifully insightful, in fact, I had initially borrowed it from the library, but wound up purchasing it as I very much want to underline and make margin notes, as I'm sure I will refer to it time and again. I highly recommend this lovely, poignant work, that also happens to be wonderfully written.

The Gift of Years: Growing Older Gracefully by Joan Chitister is a hopeful commentary on the thoughts of well-known people and s few saints who ponder what it means to grow old in an environment such as the USA where youth is most valued and catered to in the creation and sales of various items. Older folk are not considered a good market for sales and are not considered in material goods being offered to the public The author also shares her own thoughts of growing older. Turning 70 was the starting point when she began to see changes in her energy and interests. The importance of meditation is expressed. A gpod, all around book for those in search of a spiritual, thoughtful old age.

This should be required reading for anyone approaching the golden years of life!

Joan Chittester writes so clearly there leaves no doubt this is not theory on her part. She has lived
some of it already, knows elders who've told their story or whom she has observed, and has researched
the topic carefully. The wisdom with which she builds her case is both down-to-earth and accessible to
elders of all backgrounds - and professionally researched, giving teeth and credibility. The way the book
is divided into short chapters on given topics, allows the reader to take on the topic in small pieces, the
way you would eat a course of a meal and allow time to digest it before going on. Through the lenses of the
different topics, the main points are shown to be relevant any way you look at them. This book is a "must
read" for all people advancing in years or who have loved ones who are. It should be required reading for
anyone entering the "young old" (65-74) years as Joan describes them. The best part is that she's writing for
herself too, and her work couldn't be more credible. Don't wait. Order this book today. "The Gift of Years"
will be the best gift you could give yourself if your desire is to live a vibrant, meaningful last chapter of
life.
