The Ottoman Age of Exploration, by Giancarlo Casale

In 1517, the Ottoman Sultan Selim "the Grim" conquered Egypt and brought his empire for the first time in history into direct contact with the trading world of the Indian Ocean. During the decades that followed, the Ottomans became progressively more engaged in the affairs of this vast and previously unfamiliar region, eventually to the point of launching a systematic ideological, military and commercial challenge to the Portuguese Empire, their main rival for control of the lucrative trade routes of maritime Asia.

The Ottoman Age of Exploration is the first comprehensive historical account of this century-long struggle for global dominance, a struggle that raged from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Straits of Malacca, and from the interior of Africa to the steppes of Central Asia.

Based on extensive research in the archives of Turkey and Portugal, as well as materials written on three continents and in a half dozen languages, it presents an unprecedented picture of the global reach of the Ottoman state during the 16th century. It does so through a dramatic recounting of the lives of sultans and viziers, spies, corsairs, soldiers-of-fortune, and women from the imperial harem. Challenging traditional narratives of Western dominance, it argues that the Ottomans were not only active participants in the Age of Exploration, but ultimately bested the Portuguese in the game of global politics by using sea power, dynastic prestige, and commercial savoir faire to create their own imperial dominion throughout the Indian Ocean.

Interesting and Useful
By R. Albin
This interesting and clearly written book is an effort to provide a more balanced view of the Ottoman Empire. Casale is concerned with rebutting or modifying the view that the Ottoman Empire was an inward looking, land based polity that failed to exhibit the dynamism of European states in exploring new territories and pursuing commercial opportunities. To dispell this view of the Ottoman Empire, Casale provides a fairly detailed narrative of Ottoman involvement in the Indian Ocean, particularly their rivalry with the Portugese. Casale argues well that this was a major effort by the Ottomans, that this was a novel effort, that the Ottoman court exhibited considerable interest in new geographic knowledge, and that commercial interests, particularly managing the spice trade from Southeast Asia, were of considerable importance. Casale's narrative, which is interesting in its own right, largely substantiates these points and is consistent with Casale's general argument. Viewed through the lens of Ottoman activities in the Indian Ocean, the Ottoman Empire does look quite a bit like several of the agressively expansionist and mercantilist European states.

Casale's arguments, however, have some defects. His European comparator is Portugal, the major Indian Ocean rival for the Ottomans. But, Casale is comparing a relatively weak European state with arguably the most powerful state in the European state system. To really make a strong case, Casale would have to compare the Ottoman Empire in detail with a comparable European state, which would mean a detailed comparison with Hapsburg Spain, not Portugal. Casale makes much of the Ottoman court's interest in new geographic knowledge but adduces little evidence that there was anything comparable to the print culture of Europe or that Ottoman intellectuals were generating new approaches like the more important European cartographers. Casale's criticism of prior views of the Ottomans as "land-based" is a bit of a straw man argument. Ottoman naval power in the Mediterrenean has long been recognized.

There may be an alternate and more productive way to look at this issue. Casale is appropriately critical of "Orientalist" views of the Ottomans which contrast European dynamism with Eastern conservatism. Casale himself, however, has written this book as sustained comparison between the Ottoman Empire and Europe, an explicit acceptance of the Ottomans as the proverbial "Other." What much of his narrative shows is that the Ottoman Empire was an integral part of the early modern European state system. Rather than seeing Ottoman activities in the Indian Ocean as a parallel to aggressively expansionist European states, it makes at least as much sense to view these activities as just another example of how the European state system promoted expansionism.

A vivid account of the 16th Century imperial competition between the Ottomans and Portuguese in the Indian Ocean
By jeffergray
I thoroughly enjoyed this volume, finishing it in a little over a week (aided, admittedly, by the fact that I spent half of that time on a long weekend at a seaside resort where the weather was unseasonably chilly and wet). It is well-written and was handsomely produced by the Oxford University Press, with more than twenty carefully selected illustrations that help the reader to correctly envision the warships of the Turks and Portuguese and the trading ports and fortresses of the Indian Ocean during the sixteenth century. There are also four useful but cartographically basic maps that help the reader to place the location of the ports and battles discussed.

To the extent that most western readers know anything substantial about the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century, we tend to think of it as a Mediterranean and Balkan power, gradually gobbling up the remaining Christian fortresses along the coasts of Greece and Cyprus while also pushing north up the Danube Valley. But Casale's book reminds us that the Empire's growth in western Asia and north Africa during the first four decades of the sixteenth century was even more explosive.

In 1517, the Empire's eastern frontier ran across Asia Minor from roughly the Taursus Mountains in the south to Trebizond in the north. In that year, the Ottoman Sultan Selim "the Grim" went to war against the Mamluk Sultanate, another Islamic power that had dominated the eastern Mediterranean since the final defeat and expulsion of the crusaders two centuries earlier. Selim's army made short work of the Mamluks, incorporating their possessions in Syria, Palestine and Egypt into his empire and thereby more than doubling its size in less than a year. In 1534, the Ottomans seized Iraq from the Safavid rulers of Persia, acquiring a foothold on the Persian Gulf at Basra, and four years later they extended their conquests to Yemen, thereby securing the northern gate to the Red Sea.

These moves brought the Ottomans into contact and then conflict with the Portuguese, who first reached India in their carracks and caravels at the very end of the fifteenth century. Within a decade, the Portuguese began to establish a string of fortresses along its western coast and went to war with the Mamluk Empire. Casale suggests that their dual objective was to enrich themselves and impoverish the Mamluks by seizing control of the East Indian spice trade. They believed that accomplishing these objectives would make possible a renewed crusade that would recover the Holy Land and secure the shorter trade route from the Mediterranean across the isthmus of Suez, down the Red Sea, and then across the Indian Ocean.

As Casale makes clear, the Ottomans likewise coveted the riches produced by the spice trade - pepper from India and Ceylon, cinnamon, cloves and camphor from the East Indies. They also had a religious-ideological objective of their own: that of ensuring the safe passage of Moslem pilgrims from India and the Indies to the Arabian holy cities of Mecca and Medina, and of protecting the holy cities themselves against possible attack by Portuguese forces sailing up the Red Sea. This great power competition between the Ottomans and the Portuguese for control of the Indian Ocean trade routes lasted from 1525-1589.

Casale's account of this long-running conflict is dramatic and vividly presented. As he summarizes an early phase of the Ottoman-Portuguese wars:

"[The years] from 1538 to 1546[] had been a period of bitter and almost continuous warfare between Istanbul and Lisbon, conducted across an enormous area spanning the full breadth of the Indian Ocean. On the high seas, Ottoman corsairs and their Muslim allies had faced off against the Portuguese fleet, staging coordinated attacks in theaters of operations from south India to the Arabian coast. In the Horn of Africa and in Southeast Asia, elite units of Ottoman and Portuguese musketeers - the sixteenth-century equivalent of commandos - had locked horns in guerrilla wars to prop up friendly local regimes and to destabilize their rivals. And from their main bases of supply in Suez and Goa, both sides had launched massive armadas, consisting of thousands of men and dozens of ships, against each other's most important maritime redoubts in Egypt and India."

Casale ably recounts the major strokes and counterstrokes launched by each side - the Ottoman expedition against Diu in India in 1538, the retaliatory Portuguese attack on Suez in 1541, the Ottoman attempts to reduce the Portuguese fortress of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf in the 1550's, and the effort by the Ottoman corsair Mir Ali in 1589 to develop the island city of Mombasa as an advanced base from which to extend Ottoman power far south along the Swahili coast of east Africa. The latter expedition went disastrously awry when a marauding (and allegedly cannibalistic) army of 20,000 Zimba warriors suddenly appeared from out of the continent's interior at exactly the wrong moment.

My only quibbles with Casale's book are that it would have been helpful if he had provided a little more detail on the origins and growth of Portugal's Indian Ocean Empire by way of background. And (perhaps understandably in light of the book's focus, as evidenced by its title) the opposing Portuguese leaders remain shadowy, in contrast to the colorful succession of Ottoman corsairs and grand viziers who dominate his account. Also, to the extent the book's title may lead you to expect accounts of Ottoman explorations of lands previously unknown to Europeans comparable to those of the Spanish, French, and British in the New World, you won't find that here. Portuguese seafarers and Moslem merchants had already trailblazed the path to India and the Indies; this book is about the commercial, military and diplomatic competition between the Portuguese and the Ottomans that resulted.

A refreshing take on the Global Age of Exploration
By Andy
Casale offers a refreshing view of an otherwise neglected period of exploration. While historians often focus on the accomplishments of Europeans starting in the 16th century, Casale focuses on the Ottoman Age of Exploration (as the title suggests). This is definitely worth a read for those interested in World History.

Wonderful
By CMCM
I bought this book for an Asian Humanities class. This is a textbook, and the price is horrendous even for a used copy, which is truly a shame because the price alone makes this wonderful book so very inaccessible to the average reader. Patrick S. Bresnan is a talented writer as he beautifully introduces stories and concepts behind Hinduism and Asian Buddhist traditions. His prose style is interesting and very understandable, with a subtle touch of humor where warranted, and he makes complex ideas very easy to understand and absorb. From start to finish this is a thoughtful, enjoyable and enlightening read. I had intended to sell back this book at the end of the semester, but I love it so much I now plan to keep it for myself. I wish it were more affordable so readers interested in the subject would be more likely to buy it. An earlier edition exists for slightly less money, but I don't know how it might be different from this edition, it has fewer pages. This book is highly recommended and this is one of those books that everyone should read.

Great resource for Eastern Religion and Pholosophy!
By RollaMike
This book was used as a textbook for the online course of Eastern Religion and Philosophy. It made the course enjoyable, and is one of the few textbooks that can stand alone as an excellent study of Eastern Religions, their histories, and the various philosophies. Well written and easy to read, it is deep in details and a great 'one resource guide' to have around. In fact, I have it as a kindle book for reference that's always with me. Two points on the Kindle version; first, it uses the standard page numbers as the printed version, and second, because the text is not realizable, it is only readable on an iPad or larger device. No iPhone capacity.

Highly recommended. I wish I had this book two years ago
By Gerard Cunningham
I really liked this book, for the following reasons:
1. It is a great introduction to web scraping. The reader is given confidence to use well-known Python packages such as BeautifulSoup and get useful results from scraping webpages in a very short time.
2. Where to go after learning the basics? - the author describes the tools, techniques and frameworks to use for scraping dynamic websites, including code examples. This is the most challenging part of the book because it frequently involves combining tools and the reader will have to get his/her hands dirty and learn by doing also. This is reasonable since different websites present different challenges.
3. I liked the author's writing style. She favors simple explanations, identifies potential pitfalls and makes clear, technical recommendations based on her experience.

Highly recommended. I wish I had this book two years ago.

I can finally web scrape, and you can too with this book!
By Sigmandis
After learning the basics of Python I really struggled to dig into a project. Programming, just like a foreign language, leaves your memory quickly if you don't use it. I had tried web scraping with several video tutorials, but couldn't work through the tutorials to the point of understanding how to build one myself. Then...I got Ryan Mitchell's book. This book sets you up with not only the basics, but also more advanced techniques that you'll need to really build out your scraper. Ryan touches on other subjects such as using a database, working around data hidden in Javascript, cleaning up data, using NLPT, and more. You'll get a solid foundation to launch into your own Web Scraping project, and learn just enough about additional topics (like MySql) to integrate them into your scraper. I really appreciate how Ryan made this approachable for both a Python beginner, and for an intermediate user.

By Christoph Schnelle
This is a truly excellent book. It is the closest I have seen in a book to the experience of sitting with a friendly, approachable expert who is ready to answer your questions intelligently and in a supportive way. You need the very basics of Python as can be learned from the Pycharm educational version but everything else is provided.

The Best Anthology I've Ever Read! (Lindy@ A Bookish Escape)
By Lindy@ A Bookish Escape
My Thoughts:

Fifty First Times: A New Adult Anthology was a treasure trove of beautiful short stories, by some of my favorite authors, as well as authors that I had never heard of. This was the best anthology that I have read to date! I highly recommend it! At the current price of $1.99 for the ebook, it is a steal! I wouldn't recommend reading this anthology in one sitting. I would only read a few stories at a time, so you have time to really think about each story, and let it sink it. Some of these stories are prequels to a series, some are companion stories to a series, and some are stand alone stories.

There were so many reasons that I loved this anthology. It was the perfect sampling of everything that I love about New Adult books! Each story dealt with the experiences that we go through as we grow up, and mature in to the person that we eventually will become. Readers will be able to relate to some of these experiences, and I found myself reminiscing about many of my firsts. Stories dealt with experiencing your first kiss, falling in love for the first time, losing one's virginity, healing from the scars within, following your dreams, second chances in love, and more! Some of the stories were fun, sexy, and short; while others were more serious and emotional in nature. I also got to read my first story in free verse, and though I wasn't much of a fan of that particular story, I appreciated the new experience.

I absolutely loved the majority of the stories in this anthology, and I hope that these authors come out with a part two, because if this happens, I will be ecstatic, and purchase it immediately! I appreciate how some of the authors touched on both difficult and controversial topics. One of my favorite stories in this anthology was, A Little Too Scarred, by Lisa Desrochers. It dealt with a woman who had been severely disfigured. She lost an eye, and had scarring on her body. Her self-esteem became non-existent, she refused to leave her home, and would not let the man she had fallen in love with see her. This story really touched and broke my heart. Due to my own personal experience, I have scars on my body, due to multiple surgeries I had to undergo 5 years ago, to save my life. I too have had to deal with self esteem issue's, feeling unattractive, and not wanting to go out in public. So, I could relate to the main character, and her thought process and actions were very realistic.

Another story that I loved was, Two in the Morning, by Roni Loren. This is the first story that I have read by this author, and the first story that I have read dealing with homosexuality. I enjoyed this story, because the author did such a great job of putting the reader inside the thought process of the main character. He was scared to tell his best friend that he was gay, along with the rest of his friend's and father. He didn't want to lose everyone in his life that he cared about, and I felt so bad for his inner struggle, and how he had to hide himself from the people that he loved the most. There were so many stories in this anthology that touched my heart, but there were just as many fun, and sexy stories too. Love in an Elevator, by Carrie Ryan was smoking hot, as was Believe in Me by J. Lynn. Sharing Firsts by Molly McAdams was an amazing story of an everlasting and passionate love! It flashed from the past to the present and told a special story about a couple who had shared all of their firsts together. They had been best friends since they were 5 years old, which eventually grew in to a great love!

My Rating:

I give Fifty First Times: A New Adult Anthology, 4 Memorable, Romantic, Sexy, and Emotion-Filled Stars! Read this anthology if you are looking for a treasure trove of short stories, full of variety, and a sampling of several talented New Adult authors!

My Favorite Quotes:

"We're a symphony--our limbs and lips and skin making up the instruments, working together to create a beautiful piece of music." (eARC, Loc. 712)

~Audrey

(Daylight by Julie Cross)

"...love might come around a bunch of times, but the person who drove you crazy and still couldn't drive you away...that only comes around once." (eARC, Loc. 6207)

~Sammie

(Going for Broke by Lyla Payne)

So many stories, with a little bit of everything for everyone!
By Step Into Fiction
So I've never reviewed or even read a full anthology before so I wasn't sure how to review it. Do I review it as a whole book or do I review each individual story? I decided to go for both. As a whole, this book was a bit too much of the same stuff for me. There were 19 stories about the firsts. Maybe not all of them were the first time of having sex but they all involved relationships. Maybe if I didn't read the whole thing from start to finish - maybe a few stories here then another book then a few more followed by another book and then finished it wouldn't have been too much in my face all at once. I know most people only went in and read the stories they wanted to but I got this book to read in exchange for a review so it's what I felt should be done. There are definitely my favorites and there are definitely ones that I could've done without. Most I could've used being a little bit longer. Maybe had there not be 19 stories they could've had the opportunity for longer stories, I don't know. Regardless - it was an interesting experience.

Now, below you will have each story title with whom it's by a few words about how I felt about each.

The Corner of First and Second by Gennifer Albin – I know these are short stories and while we got the background of these two characters and their insanely long history together, which was sweet – I still felt it was rush. I know, short story, not much time to tell a story but it just seemed insanely short which made it insanely rushed. Couldn’t you write just a few more pages, give it some breathing room? Plus, this story was definitely more YA than NA, in my opinion. It was sweet and that was about it.

Daylight by Julie Cross – I really enjoyed this short story. I’m not sure if it’s characters from any of her stories, since I haven’t read her books yet, but it makes me want to. This had depth to and it was rather dark, depressing but yet beautiful and hopeful. It was just long enough to make you feel satisfied and happy but in the back of your mind, wishing for more. To me, that’s what all good short stories should do – leave you satisfied yet longing. If you felt like you just wasted your time (and/or money) then it wasn’t done right.

A Little Too Scarred by Lisa Desrochers – Oh my gosh! I forgot she had a story in here and when I got to it, I may have fist pumped. This series, I have so much love for it that I never wanted it to end so give me some more, no matter how small. But then I found out it was with Rick and I wasn’t so sure. But Lisa, she has converted me to liking Rick, to really liking Rick. This story was beautiful, heartfelt, extremely realistic and just – if it doesn’t change your opinion of Rick, I don’t know what will because he is a guy any girl would be lucky to be with.

Once Bitten by Cole Gibsen – This was another beautiful story. So much crammed in to one short story that I definitely wanted more. A past destroyed, a present very lonely and a future that is now looking to much different than it used to. Four years of heart break and we find out that his ‘break up’ wasn’t for reasons we thought. Then you mix a lost 5 year old girl in the mix and wow. I’ve never read anything by this author (nor ever heard of her) but it makes me want to look up more of her work.

Crash by Sophie Jordan – I haven’t read Foreplay yet but I became a fan of Sophie’s after reading Uninvited and I want to read her NA stuff badly. Reading this novella definitely pushes me to wanting to read it now. I’m not sure if it spoils the book for me but I’m thinking it does (but I’m okay with that). I freaking loved the characters in these books and I’m hoping we’ll get more of them in either Foreplay or Tease because I’m telling you, this wasn’t enough.

Under the Seryn Moon by Melissa Landers – Deals between royal families have always thrown me for a loop. Especially if we’re not talking modern times or even of a place from here. Negotiating your child into a marriage for the better of your kingdom is just weird. I would think a parent would want their child happy but yet force them in to a marriage with a person they don’t even know in a place that is so incredibly foreign to them. That’s the case here. And while it boggles thy mind, I kind of love it in a weird way. Well, when it works out and most of the times in the stories I read, it works out. This was sweet, charming and downright adorable to read. These are two characters I would love to see their relationship and their family (possibly) grow.

How to Be a Heart Breaker by Lauren Layne – I freaking love the voice of this author. Or maybe it’s just this story, I’m not sure since I’ve never read any of her other work but oh my gosh, it’s full of spunk! This was probably the most entertaining one thus far. Predictable, sure but just so much fun. I am definitely looking this author up to see her other work.

Two in the Morning by Roni Loren – This I liked. All these short stories were girl/guy while this was guy/guy and really, everyone needs love so I was excited to see this story in the mix. I have to say, I didn’t suspect the outcome of this until right before it was revealed. I would’ve definitely liked to see this drawn out a bit more in a longer story because I think it would’ve been brilliant, especially with these characters but alas, I was happy with what I got.

Believe in Me by J. Lynn – Honestly, this was the main reason for me wanting to read this book. I love Jen, I do – she’s brilliant and I will read anything she writes. I love Ollie and I love Brit and I loved the idea of them together so when she mentioned this short story with them, I was like, sign me up! I was not disappointed except they need their own book. Seriously. A short story is not enough to do these two justice.

Sharing First by Molly McAdams – So, I enjoyed this one until the end-ish. It was cute because it was about two people who have loved each other and only each other and are on the verge of tying the knot (like a week away). At age 5, he knew he was going to marry her. I mean, c’mon, how can you not fall in love with a story like this?! It’s adorable and beautiful and everyone wishes it would’ve happened to them. Rarely does it happen. But then, how I interrupted the story just kind of made me go, huh? That’s the first? Then, it redeemed itself and the ending was sweet.

Strike Out by Myra McEntire – I’m not a big fan of a baseball and these guys all sound sleazy except for one. He’s been raised right by his mamma and damn, is he hot? Not talking appearance here, people, I’m talking personality. Just who he is as a person. Seriously – I could read a whole book about these two and everything around them.

This Is My Sign by Hannah Moskowitz – This was probably the shortest story in the whole book. Literally only a few pages long. It was definitely pure Hannah Moskowitz style. As a fan of hers, I liked it. Definitely to the point with a little bit of mystery left there, as well.

Going for Broke by Lyla Payne – THIS I loved but didn’t agree with. I didn’t agree with the main characters timing. But sometimes, you can’t let the thing you love most go even if it was a screwed up relationship from four years ago. If you haven’t gotten over someone in four years then I would say you probably aren’t going to any time soon. But telling this person two days before their wedding is a little bit rude and selfish. Thankfully, she knows this but it doesn’t stop her. While I don’t agree with her on that, it was definitely fun. I wanted more from his friends, more from them and just more.

For the Sake of Science by Mark Perini – I know he’s a new writer and he’s originally known, in the YA world, as the guy on the cover of Julie Cross’ TEMPEST books but I felt his writing was lacking. It felt very amateur compared to all the other stories I’ve read in this book and to have it this far back, made it very apparent, in my opinion. I didn’t even like the story, either – so there’s that, too.

Love in an Elevator by Carrie Ryan – Why can’t I have this kind of luck in an elevator? Or anywhere, for that matter? I’m not asking for a hookup, but just to meet some nice guy at a random time. This story was cute – living in the moment and going after what you want. Being stuck in an elevator doesn’t always have to be a bad thing, right?

Bunga Bunga by Andrew Shafer – Oh my gosh. I am dying! I was joking about how this anthology had every kind of first except ones first orgy. What does this story start off talking about our two characters going to? An orgy. I couldn’t stop laughing. Not because the stories funny but because I had just talked about it. It was an okay story besides me laughing (again, not because it’s funny) and it’s another m/m story (male/male in case you were wondering).

With the Lights On by Alessandra Thomas – Oh, this is definitely a fantastic short story for any of us out there that have self esteem issues. This was beautiful. About a girl who isn't skinny but a woman with curves. A woman who has had every name thrown at her and then some. A woman who has never let herself love because really, she can't love herself. How could you possibly open your heart up to someone else when you can't even love the owner of said heart? Beautiful, beautiful story. I can absolutely relate, 100%.

Field Emotions by Melissa West – A football short story. I’m sold. Seriously. I love football and this story was too good. Seriously, write a full length novel with these two, please! Do guys like him actually exist because if so, I want to find one and claim him as my own. I do believe I had a smile on my face through most of this story. It was very real, very sweet and just very good.

Grind by Tracy Wolff – I get all mushy over stories of first loves finding their way back to each other. I get even mushier over childhood loves finding their way to each but that’s not what this story is. They first met when she was 15 and he 17 and since then (3 years) they haven’t thought about anyone but each other. That is devotion. That is true love. This was definitely one of cuter ones in this anthology.

Great collection of stories for New Adult lovers
By Misha
This was a great collection of short stories. Often in anthologies there are real hits and misses, but I found most of these stories to be quite engaging. It's challenging to tell a short story in a way that is both intriguing and satisfying, and I think the authors in this anthology did a nice job. I connected the most with The Corner of First and Second by Gennifer Albin, A Little Too Scarred by Lisa Desrochers, Crash by Sophie Jordan, Believe in Me by J. Lynn, Sharing Firsts by Molly McAdams, and Field Emotions by Melissa West. After finishing each of these I definitely want more of those characters. This was an enjoyable compilation of nicely written stories.

A must read for all King Air pilots
By Cody Diekroeger
This book should be required reading for all pilots who aspire to, or currently, fly a King Air. Clements does an excellent job of explaining the nuances of this aircraft in a thought-provoking manner that makes you want to get back to the plane as soon as possible just so you can replicate a procedure or situation that he has described. Clements serves up his tale of real life experiences with a balance of humor and technical expertise. "The King Air Book" is a real page turner that deserves a place in every pilot's library.
