About the Author

John Wallace was born in 1944 and raised near Ottawa, Canada. He moved to Reno, Nevada, in 1979 and ran his first marathon there in 1982.

Health and age have slowed Wallace down over the past few years, but he still continues to follow his passion to travel and run marathons around the world.

He and his wife, Nicole, have been married for forty-eight years, and together they have two sons and three granddaughters. They currently live in Sarasota, Florida.

Global Runner could set a new world record!

I just finished John Wallace's "Global Runner", and I feel he has done such a great job, the least I can do is encourage potential readers to go for the book! I have been a runner, but I feel this recounting of the author's adventures will appeal to any person, any age.

Global Runner gives an accurate picture of the culture, topography, accommodations, language and travel conditions in every one of the countries in which the author has planned for and run a marathon. Some accounts are covered in as litle as two pages. Others are covered in greater detail. The author has run marathons in places not really recognizable as countries, at altitudes as high as 17,000 feet, in sub-zero conditions, and in blazing dry desert, but doesn't seem to over dramatize in his description. This is not a book about a super athlete, or
about super-human accomplishments. It is about a man driven for a lifetime to continue to build on an accumulation of travels and efforts and personal committment. His eight world records are not based on being faster, stronger or better, but on enduring and sharing, and on recording in detail while still fresh in the mind.

This is more than a legacy to be treasured by grandchildren. It is a well written account of the world travels and endurance efforts of a man who didn't realize he had real writing talent!

AMAZING JOURNEY & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

WOW! I was able to travel the world with NO money, NO pain, and in the comfort of my home...while you, MADDOG, had to do all the work, endure all kinds of pain, show perseverance like no other, & spend all kinds of money! Such an AMAZING journey you, & your wife, Nicole, have been enjoying for many years. Your book certainly brought to life many parts of the world that I knew very little, if anything, about. Not to mention all of your MANY accomplishments & WORLD RECORDS, while touring/running the world! You are truly a GLOBAL RUNNER, John Wallace, & I'm so very proud & honoured to call you my cousin! If I were only 30 years younger, you might have inspired me to become a runner too, but think I'll just stick to golfing! lol

Inspirational person and engaging read

John, MadDog Wallace has been a running buddy since his days in Dallas running with the Brook Bach Rock. I attribute my marathon PR to his philosophy : Pain is only temporary, memories are forever. John, Dr Dick and I ran the White Rock Marathon together till 18 when my hamstring locked. Dr Dick went on but John stayed with me. He had me run backwards, sideways, short strides, long strides. At the next split he said "that was a 7:15. You can do this the rest of the race and achieve a PR". I told him he was full of ...., he wouldn't go ahead and I kept struggling. I remember vividly at 21 miles I said I can't stand the pain anymore he responded with the now famous line on page 121 "Pain is only temporary - memories are forever". He was right!! I learned that day who or what MadDog was but I only experienced it that once. John is able to summon MadDog at will.
I followed John's adventures real time through his Trip Reports of every marathon (go to his website and read them!). In reading the book you will find two stories simultaneously told. Marathon running and Travel Guide, an honest and blunt travel guide. John does not sugar coat.
There is plenty of material for a follow up book in which I hope he answers my burning question. What did you wish for in Taktshang Goemba sacred cave in Bhutan (pg 252)?

An advisor's view

Geoff Reis and Geof Leigh's book is entertaining, insightful and has some very important lessons for anyone embarking on portfolio or programme management in a traditional organisation. The charecters are likeable, believable and bring the concepts to life by the way that the fictional supermarket chain tackles the introduction of disruptive technology.

I found the book hard to put down and that I was drawn into their story and the author's quirky humour. Worth every penny.

Sweet Story ....However a Bit Short

Having read a lot of great books....in my opinion these two could have easily made one novel and still would have been a short story. The first book appeared to end in the middle of a thought and if the second book had not been readily available I would have given them 2 maybe even 3 stars. I read both books in a few hours and it just appeared that something was missing. Maybe the books required more character development...or possibly the plot could have been explored a little further. Once I finished reading both books... It felt like something was missing. A great piece of work should leave you wanting to hear more about the characters and their lives, not lacking something. A great piece allows you to enter the story where you live through the characters and can feel what they feel. I have read several stories that spanned over 3 novels and immediately started over to read them again because I didn't want the story to end.....these did not do that for me....sorry. While it was a great story line, I could not picture any of the characters and certainly was not able empathize or feel anything here. These are the first books that I have read from this author....so I am willing to try some more of her works to see if it gets better.

Reads Like a Short Story-But Well Worth It!

Ashley, a would be novelist, is working for Anthony Lang, the world renown writer. He is ex-CIA but now blind, who seems to have a struggle within where the opposite sex is concerned. Anthony is falling in love with her but he struggles that he is not worthy of her because of his blindness. All the while, Ashley can’t understand why he would make wild passionate love to her and eight hours later fly off to Copenhagen for research without letting her know.

Ross weaves an exceptional storyline that creates an awesome appetizer to want to read more. With vivid hot sex scenes literally from page one, draws the reader in, wondering what will happen next. Short but sweet, book two reads more like a short story but is well worth the time.

An amazing story of love and devotion!

Oh my heavens! What an amazing love story, so heart wrenching and yet so tender and sweet! I could not hold back my tears - what if Anthony could recover his sight with an eye transplant? Or whatever medical breakthrough miracle? How wonderful this would be for Anthony and Ashley - I'd be sooo happy for them, a true to life fairy tale happily ever after! Sandra, I love all your books, no matter what genre. I can't find the continuing story of Erick, though. Could you please help me with this? Thanks.

About the Author

Robert N. (Bob) Brady has been involved in the automotive, heavy-duty truck/bus, and equipment field since 1959, having served a recognized indentured apprenticeship as both an automotive and heavy-duty truck/bus and equipment technician. He is a certified automotive, commercial transport, and heavy-duty equipment technician. A graduate of Stow College of Engineering, where he majored in the Thermodynamics of Heat Engines, he holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He also holds a degree in Adult Education.

His experience includes positions as a shop foreman and service manager for a number of major heavy truck companies and OEMs, as well as a Fleet Maintenance Superintendent with a large North American truck fleet. Other experience includes positions as Manager of National Technical Training, Canada; Sales Application Engineer; Field Service Engineer for Detroit Diesel Corporation; Diesel Engineering and Diesel Mechanic /Technician college instructor; and Department Head of the program at Vancouver Community College, where he also served a two-year term as President of the Faculty Association.

He is a full member of SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers), for which he has served as the chair of the British Columbia Section. Under his leadership in 1989-90, the section received an SAE Award of Merit for outstanding technical meetings. At the International level of SAE, he served three years on the worldwide Sections Board as Vice-Chair and then Chair. Other activities in SAE at the Sections Board level included chairing the Executive Committee, the Administrative Committee, the Brazil Ad Hoc Committee, and the International Sections and Affiliates Committee. He has also served as a member of the Sections Evaluation and Awards Committee. He served as a Regional Coordinator, where he worked with the B.C., Alberta, and Manitoba Sections in Canada, and was an acting RC for the NW /Spokane-Intermountain, Washington, and Oregon sections. He also served as a member of SAE's Total Quality Committee. He was elected to SAE's worldwide International Board of Directors, serving from 1994 through 1996, and was one of two SAE board of directors appointed to the Ad Hoc Committee that in March 1996 initiated the development and organization of the STS (Service Technicians Society), an affiliate of SAE International.

In 1987 he established his own company, HiTech Consulting Ltd., which specializes in technical training program design/implementation aimed specifically at heavy-duty, on- and off-highway equipment. He has delivered specialized training courses for engineers, service technicians, and maintenance personnel at a number of companies and corporations. Other functions include fleet maintenance and failure analysis programs as well as equipment specing. He has appeared as an expert witness in a number of cases involving patent infringement and engine/ equipment failure.

He is the author of fourteen textbooks for Prentice Hall dealing with automotive fuel injection and electronics/computers, diesel, and heavy-duty trucks. A member of the TWNA (Truck Writers of North America), he writes monthly technical/maintenance articles for two of Canada's major newspaper/magazines: Trucknews, Canada's National Trucking Newspaper and Equipment Buyer's Guide, and Grainews, a national farmer's monthly newspaper distributed in both Canada and the United States, where his monthly articles deal with truck and equipment maintenance.

In the United States, a recently conducted detailed study of over a hundred highly skilled professions by the GAO (General Accounting Office) determined that the needed skill levels of both automotive and diesel technicians were on a par with X-ray technicians and computer programmers! To be successful, they projected that a minimum of a high school diploma with emphasis on math, science, physics, English, and computer literacy accompanied by a preferred one to two years of college training in their specific technical field be viewed as prerequisites.

The technological advancements in internal combustion engines and equipment, with their high degree of electronics controls, demand that tomorrow's technicians be vigilant to lifelong learning techniques and the continual absorption of new knowledge. In this, the fifth edition of Diesel Engine and Fuel System Repair, Prentice Hall and I have contacted a number of readers and instructors to review the suggested new material to solicit their views, thoughts, and ideas of what a revised textbook in this subject area should offer. It is never an easy task to incorporate all of the required preferences that individuals would like to see, due to the size and cost limitations of the finished product.

The major key elements and subject matter finally chosen were based upon the necessity to offer and comply with both the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) and TQ (Trade Qualification) test areas. As a base, I have incorporated information that is relevant to ASE's medium/heavy truck and diesel engines testing areas. Consequently, detailed subject material not included in ASE testing areas such as mechanical diesel fuel injection and governor major overhaul, phasing, and calibrating was not deemed necessary, although we do describe the function, operation, and troubleshooting of these specific systems. The various fuel injection shops and technicians who are members of ADS (Association of Diesel Specialists), and who are tested and certified in this highly specialized area, are the best personnel to handle this type of repair.

Each chapter was reviewed, updated, and added to where appropriate to reflect the latest technology. A wide range of new illustrations and photographs in two-color format was chosen to accentuate the technical descriptions, and also to improve the visual interpretation aspects under discussion. The new material added highlights the latest technology currently in use by all of the major diesel engine OEMs worldwide, particularly the new designs of engine component parts, electronic fuel injection systems, and electronic governor controls. Several new chapters dealing with engine run-in and dyno testing, engine diagnosis and troubleshooting, and an excellent simplified chapter description/coverage of the basic theory, operation, and diagnosis of diesel electronic fuel injection systems will prepare the reader to successfully challenge those specific areas of ASE and/or TQ testing.

To support technician professionalism, ASE-type task lists, test specs content areas, and ASE-type review questions facilitate your study habits, and provide a structured guide for both technician trainees and technical instructors. Liberal use of suggested repair or replacement flowcharts throughout the book chapters will promote decision making as to the most effective and efficient method to follow when conducting repairs. The incorporation of appropriate website addresses offers a library of additional knowledge quickly available to the reader and instructor to expand and support their study habits and to obtain specific repair instructions and diagnostic/troubleshooting tips and advice. Appropriate sidebars, technical tips, and diagnostic examples accompanied by frequently asked questions support and encourage the readers' understanding of the text under discussion.

No textbook of this type can truly reflect all of the wishes and needs of everyone within the diesel industry, but through the support, encouragement, and assistance I received from many of my colleagues, I trust that the finished product is reflective of their commitment to the highest standards of excellence, and that you, the reader, are pleased with the approach and material contained in this new edition. Fantastic educational tool

This book is great at giving general knowledge that you can use on any diesel engine. I have done quite a bit of tinkering with gasoline engines and needed to learn specifics about diesels so that I could work on my own tractor and bull dozer. I'd already bought the manual on the dozer. It had lots of specific information about my dozer but overall was very difficult to understand. I couldn't even orient myself to the drawings.

When I got done with this book I felt like I could look at any diesel engine, large or small, and understand almost everything about it. It is very well written with great pictures and drawings.

This is one of the best book investments I have ever made.

Pick a Target!

The edition I bought (two editions old) is just a mess. The author clearly inherited a book about diesel engines from the 1970s when all the fuel management was mechanical, and cobbled on material about early electronic controls. Much of the latter material appears to be copied from manufacturer's manuals without a re-write and without enough background.

There is a good bit of theory, which is pretty well done, but that's only about a fifth of the book. I would recommend borrowing this book from a library, or quickly reading it at a textbook store before you buy.

Maybe it's remedied in later editions, but the authors need to choose between old-school diesels and modern computer-controlled systems and write to that. Or else heavily edit this to cover just the theory and basic diagnostics, and expect instructors and students to use manufacturer's manuals for the systems they actually interact with in a lab/shop setting.

Fnally a very uplifting view of the world.

My wife asked for this book and I ordered it a while ago. True to Amazon's word it arrived the day of it's actual release.
The way she made it into a series of many short stories with very high resolution pictures made it a very good read.
I was also impressed with her fairness of other views which is far from normal in todays Political books. She has a very uplifting view of life along with respect of where she came from. My wife and I highly recommend this book regardless of which side of the aisle you are on.

Dana's book is a refreshing and fun recounting of a remarkable journey from the ranch to the West Wing. She shares amusing and heartfelt stories from her days at the White House sparring with reporters in the Brady Press Briefing Room and advising the President in the Oval Office.
