He is an Incident Analyst at SecurityFocus, has served as an expert witness on security topics, and has done internal security investigation for a major software vendor. Ryan has been working in the IT field for over 13 years, the last 7 of which have been spent primarily in information security. He has been an active participant in various security mailing lists, such as BugTraq, for years, and is frequently sought after as a speaker at security conferences. Big Names, Great Book

When I read the first edition of this book, was truly disappointed. I was wondering how such people could have written such book. Not that the book was worthless, but too 'standard' to met the expectations I had from these guys.
Still the idea was very interesting (information directly from the real experts), and I kept waiting for a new edition.
Well the second edition is now out, and not only fulfills, but exceeds all my original expectations !!
Let's take a look:
The Approach:
Understanding attacks and vulnerabilities, by understanding 'how to hack' (good hacking of course. . . .ahem )
The Book:
Rewritten, expanded and improved, the book consists of 800+ pages well structured into 18 chapters (against 450+ pages and 15 chapters of the first edition).
Well written, well presented, with a real fancy table of contents, the chapters include url's, a FAQ section and a SOLUTIONS FAST TRACK one.
A lot of CLEVER code is included as well as helpful 'Tool & Traps' and 'Notes from the Underground. . . ' outlines.
The new sections (all outstanding) include:
- Hardware Hacking (otherwise only found in papers)
- Tunneling (excellent)
- IDS evasion (very easily explained)
- Format strings attacks
The Intended Audience:
People willing to become network security pros.
Contents:
- Introduction to Security, Attacks and related Methodologies.
- Cryptography.
- Unexpected Input, Buffer Overflow, Format Strings.
- Sniffing, Hijacking and Spoofing.

The Bottom Line:
It is not just a good book, it is the best book among high level network security books, and the only that compares with specialized papers. Only quite easier.
I got more than 60 papers on buffer overflows. None compares with the classical 'Smashing The Stack For Fun And Profit' by Aleph One. IMHO, however, the corresponding chapter from this book, does compare and is really easier to understand.
Finally, the 'piece de resistance' of the book, is the chapter about Spoofing. Really enjoyed it, and by the way got surprised reading the innovative (to me) technique to 'Spoof Connectivity Through Asymmetric Firewalls'. Good Job Dan ;-)
As an added bonus, as an owner of this book, you'll find a lot of code files, applications and links...

why Amazon keep doing this again and again? This book is different with the reissue book. You can not just scan the other version of this book and put then says it is digital version of the original one. When search for ISBN this book pop up. Why? They have different ISBN Ok? Why this book?
The reissue version have different editor and different page number. I use this book for my class. Plz do not put them together OK? It is confusing. Please notify people the scan version is different with the paper book. For some books, that is the same version. Amazon scan the paper version and put it online. But not all of them. Especially the textbook, the edition of book is important.

A classic among classics

Every few years I read this book. The first time was in college; I enjoyed it so much. The subjects argued (piety, justice, etc.) are timeless and profound. The method of argument ("Socratic") is still used today in law schools because of its clarity and rigor. The translation is also excellent, conveying not just meaning but nuances such as tone. The footnotes are also helpful, adding additional information and clarity.

Wonderful piece of knowledge. In this book Plato introduces us to the brilliant mind of Socrates and his belief in afterlife. The concepts of heavens and hell. he talks about the earth and in many different aspects. Many things that people take as Christian values do not seem to be the case after reading this book. It sheds a light on the many aspects of our belief system, spirituality etc. Must read if you want to have a better understanding of Christianity and its roots. This book contains; before Socrates' trial, his trial and after his trial.

Although a natural sequel to his earlier monograph On Divine Sovereignty and Our Freedom published in 2004, this one breaks fresh ground and fields the posers, whether from the physicist or the neuroscientist. Science and religion are often viewed as polar opposites or parallel universes, but the really great thinkers do not think so. About the Author
Neduntheru Kannan was born in Neduntheru village, close to Kudamurutti and Kaveri rivers, in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India, educated through the Sarasvati Ambal Elementary School of East Valuthoor, Board High School of Ayyampettai and later in Vivekananda college of Madras where he did post-graduate Mathematics. He taught Mathematics in Government Colleges in Madras and Mangalore for some time and then drifted into Central Government service in New Delhi much against his will. He pursued his interest in Sanskrit studies in New Delhi under Pandit Atma Ram, a staunch Arya Samajist, who introduced him into Nyaya, Mimamsa and Vyakarana, while Ananta Krishna Sastrigal of Noorani, Palghat led him into studies in Vedanta. It was only after retiring from service as Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Finance and settling in Madras, that he was favoured with the fortune of doing Kalakshepam with stalwarts like Goshtipuram Swamy, Paiyambadi Chetlur Swamy, Purisai Swamy, Perukkaranai Swamy and Mannargudi Swamy. What he cherishes most is the added fortune of receiving the blessings of the Pontiffs of Sri Ahobila Matam, Paundarikapuram Srimad Andavan Ashramam, Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam and Mysore Parakala Matam.

Vedanta and Modern life

An eclectic collection of science, religion, philosophy and autobiography. The author has presented his thoughts in a very consistent and detailed manner with plenty of references to history, mathematics etc. The concepts and ideas are relevant to our modern way of thinking. Nicely simplified and easy to follow!

I read the Upanishads and the commentaries on them and came to a point of cognitive dissonance. Adi Shankaracharya has been, in a way, immortalized when it comes to reading and analyzing the Upanishads. The cognitive dissonance comes into play when one looks at the world and sees beauty and love, but it seems like the message from Shankaracharya and the Advaita Vedantins is; "None of it's real -- it's all an illusion and you need to get off of this karmic wheel and out of this miserable existence." Kannan is a brilliant teacher and explores the concept of vishishadvaita - advaita with qualifications.

This is not beach-reading material. The book is 573 pages and the first chapter doesn't start until page 255. His hilarious take on Richard Dawkins is worth the price of the book. He also holds nothing back in the critique of Advaita Vedanta. While I ultimately feel the most resonance from reading the works of Lakshmanjoo, this book is a great opportunity to explore vishishadvaita and the concept of surrender from a Vaishnavite point of view.
