About the Author
Christopher O'Brien moved to the San Luis Valley in 1989 and began his private investigation of unusual events documented in his 1996 book "The Mysterious Valley ". He has written articles for numerous magazines, including "Fate, UFO Universe, Phenomena, Zeitgeist, "and "UFO Encounters. "His investigation and research have been featured in the "Denver Post, Pueblo Chieftain, New Mexican, Rocky Mountain News, Albuquerque Journal, "and in an ongoing series in "Spirit "magazine.

O'Brien has also helped develop, field-produce, supply footage, and appeared in four segments of the syndicated Paramount television program "Sightings; "appeared on "Inside Edition, Showtime, Extra; "was featured in the TBS Documentary "UFO: The Search," and in a BBC2 documentary aired in the fall of 1997. Chief Investigator for Skywatch International, he has field-produced and directed television segments for the nationally syndicated paranormal news-magazine program "Strange Universe "and is currently working on a documentary on location in San Luis Valley.

Interesting book, but....

...my God, what happened to editing? I have never read such a poorly edited book in my life. Misspelled words abound, there are single letters stuck in the middle of sentences, as well as repeated sentences and paragraphs. There are even sentences that make absolutely no sense in the context of the paragraph in which they are located or that are missing such basic requirements as a subject or verb. An occasional error can be expected, but these errors appear on page after page.

In addition to errors in composition, the manuscript was poorly edited for tightness. For example, how many times in the space of two pages do we have to be told that Laurance Rockefeller has a degree in philosophy from Princeton. We get it, already. Move on.

This is the third book published by APU that I have read and it will be the last. The first two had more than their share of errors, but this one takes the cake. There are plenty of interesting books out there to be read that are comprehensible.

That said, once you manage to wade through the terrible editing, there are some interesting stories in the book. Mr. O'Brien has a refreshing way of looking at things, and a very sensible way of investigating what is virtually uninvestigatable (is that a word?). He shows a real, logical concern for problems such as the investigator interjecting himself into the subject under investigation, which shows a level of thought and analysis that few investigators of the unknown are intelligent enough to develop. I just wish that someone had taken the time to give his manuscript the editing that it so obviously needed and deserved. If you are truly interested in the subject, read the book, but be prepared for hours of frustration just trying to decipher what Mr. O'Brien is trying to communicate. If you just want an overview of the mysterious San Luis Valley, read one of Mr. O'Brien's earlier, far more readable books.

A Poorly Edited Mess

After reading Christopher O'Briens first two excellent books, The Mysterious Valley and Enter the Valley, I eagerly awaited his third promised book.

Upon recently reading Secrets of the Mysterious Valley, I found it to be a rehash of the same material in his first two books. On one hand this was very disappointing to me, yet on the other it was good to see all the material meshed together, especially since it had been awhile since I read the first two books. There is very little new information here, which the reader will find at some point is partly due to the author's moving from the valley to Sedona in I believe 2001. He still keeps in touch with a group of "watchers" in the valley who report to him.

While the content is fascinating, this has to be one of the most poorly edited books I have ever read. We have much repetition within the book itself, run-on sentences, missing words that leave one with the need to interpret the author's meaning, extra words, sentences with words that are run together, too much punctuation, too little punctuation, different typefaces that do not appear to be deliberate, a repeated portion of a chapter, some photos that are not addressed within the chapter where they are placed, word forms used incorrectly, words and names not spelled correctly, and etcetera, etcetara, etcetera, as the King of Siam would say. With that run-on sentence of my own, I will leave other readers to find the rest of the errors.

I am not saying don't buy this book, especially if you have not read the first two, but hopefully there will be a new edition available that is properly edited. I think Christopher O'Brien's diligent work and research into the anomolous happenings in the San Luis Valley is laudable and I hope to see another book from him on the strange happenings in the Sedona area.

As one final note, the book gives no credit to the artist of the cover design, which I find very intriguing.

And as a second final note, there are two websites listed in the book, one of which give updates on the happenings in the San Luis Valley. I find this very helpful as when I read the first two books I could not find any website for Christopher O'Brien.

Fantastic and Real

As a half-time resident of the San Luis Valley (the "Mysterious Valley" of the title) in south central Colorado, I have followed and appreciated Chris O'Brien's work for several years. Unlike many professional journalists who write about anomalous phenomena such as UFOs and Unusual Animal Deaths, O'Brien sticks with the facts and avoids sensationalizing or promoting unwarranted inferences. He is not a "believer" searching for support but rather an open eyed, intelligent, and often courageous student of inexplicable, mysterious events that occur here in our isolated valley at a rate and with a bizarre intensity and long history perhaps unmatched any other place in the world. Like in the first two books focused on the "Valley," O'Brien presents himself as narrator on the ground learning as he goes, inspired, frustrated at times, devoted to trying to understand, constantly working to widen his frame of reference so as to not distort objective observation. It's a true picture, beautifully told, one bound to stimulate more realistic thinking about what is really going on here. Five cheers! Keep up the good work!!!

About the Author
Steve Fotheringham has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Weber State University, A Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration from The University of Arizona. But the only credentials he claims for this book is that he was an eyewitness. With family and news videos, text messages, emails, Aaron's written stories, journal entries, magazine and news articles, and DVR recordings that cover much of his life, coupled with the fact that Steve and his wife Kaylene were there most of the time, he was able to write an accurate and inspiring biography.

Great Read, Don't miss it.

"So pleasantly surprised! It's been a while since I've read a book with so many levels of interest. I thought it was going to be about a young man dealing with a disability who had big dreams. That's just scratching the surface. This book chronicles the story of an incredible family that have witnessed their adopted son's development into an international WCMX star. Told by the father of the family, we get an inside look into the creation of a new family, the creation of a new sport and the creation of an attitude of living that could benefit us all. Easy to read and hard to put down.

Great Book - You Won't Be Disappointed!

When I picked up this book I knew I was going to learn about an amazing athlete based on the cover! A man in a wheelchair doing a handplant at the skate park…WHAT? And boy did I learn. I learned about perseverance, dedication, attitude, and a desire to do what every other kid Aaron was hanging out was doing. Wheelz has fans around the world which is not surprising at all because of his devotion to a sport that not only inspires others, but pushes everyone’s thinking about a person with disabilities so far out of the box. What I didn’t expect this book to be was a “How to” for parents. How to not hold your child back from the things they want to try, even if it is a bit scary. How to encourage, support and love no matter what! How to fight for what they need. Steve Fotheringham tells stories in a way that makes you smile, laugh, cheer and cry. Being able to watch the video clips that he was referring to because the links were provided in the book was a perfect addition. So well written!

Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition

As the father of WCMX (or wheelchair motocross, for the uninitiated), Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition, served as a wheelchair stuntman in movies and TV shows, and toured the world with Nitro Circus and a host of charitable organizations. But it's his attitude that's truly remarkable. When a well-meaning preacher once assured him that he'd be able to walk after he was resurrected, Aaron's immediate response was, "What makes you think I'll want to?" Other kids had to leave their bikes outside as soon as they got to school, but he got to ride his bike everywhere he went.

WHEELZ affords its readers a behind-the-scenes look at Aaron's life and the rise of this bone-crushing sport. It's a one-of-a-kind book about a one-of-a-kind kid who never thought much of the fact that his legs didn't really work, and I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Denis Lynn Daly Heyck is Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures at Loyola University, Chicago, where she teaches Latin American Literature and Culture. She has published a book of oral histories, Life Stories of the Nicaraguan Revolution (Routledge, 1990), and an anthology on Latino cultures in the Unied States, Barrios and Borderlands (Routledge, 1994). She is co-author of the Destinos professional supplements Spanish for educators and Spanish for Social Services (McGraw-Hill, 1993). Professor Heyck is currently working on a book about the relationship between cultural survival and environmental sustainability in several Latin American communities. Her book reviews appear in Hispania and Choice. She received her Ph.D. from the University of London.

Mar�a Victoria Gonz�lez-Pagani is currently Chair of the Foreign Language Program at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Previously, she was Spanish Language Coordinator at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Her special interests include language teaching methodology, Spanish syntax, computer-assisted foreign language instruction, and Latin American cultural studies, especially women's issues. Miss Gonz�lez- Pagani attended the Universidad Nacional de Tucum�n, Argentina, and received her M.A. in Applied and Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

About the Author

Each book is just as good, if not better

You guys, this series is now officially one of my favorites. Each book is just as good, if not better, than the last. I adore Harriet Manners and her adorable, quirky, unique self. Getting to see Harriet in New York in Picture Perfect was a wonderful treat. I love experiencing all of Harriet’s travels, which are never lacking when it comes to clumsiness, snarky girls, and loads of adorable drama.

There’s always a little bit of romance in these books, but this one seemed to center a bit more on that aspect. Harriet isn’t boy crazy, but with her first “real” boyfriend by her side, she’s full of awkward situations and loads of laughs.

I chose the audiobook route with this one, as I have with the entire series so far. Katey Sobey IS Harriet to me, but it doesn’t stop there. She brings these characters to a whole new level that I honestly feel I couldn’t experience to this extreme level by reading it myself. I HIGHLY recommend this series on audio. I have so much love for this series!

About the Author
Roland Roycraft spent 35 years as a commercial artist and art director with work appearing in national publications such as Saturday Evening Post, Life and Look. He is the author of the best-selling Fill Your Watercolors with Light and Color and teaches popular watercolor workshops throughout the United States.

Great Atmospheric Paintings

This is a good book for seeing what effective use of masking can do for a painting. Mr. Roycraft's use of masking is an integral (if not THE prime) technique for creating the numerous paintings demonstrated in this book. The other technique he uses is pouring the watercolors onto the surface rather than painting most of it with a brush.
This is not a painting method for anyone not willing or able to know precisely all the places to mask. The sparkling waves of an ocean in one of his paintings must have taken quite some time to mask and most likely needed a detailed pencil sketch beforehand. While the pouring is imprecise the masking is not.
The book has 1 chapter that gives a step-by-step demonstration of his pouring method. One can tell from some paintings produced that this can be a time-consuming method of producing watercolor paintings if the subject matter is intricate or detailed although the results are breathtaking.
I would like to see more demonstrations from Mr. Roycraft and perhaps more details about the masking as part of the process. Statements such as "I masked only the light areas before beginning the painting. This is negative painting in reverse and makes a beautiful abstract pattern." show the thought that guides the final results.
Most of the book shows paintings in a semi-finished state with the final result and some comments on the process and thoughts in creating it. I liked this book very much and would recommend it to any watermedia painter because it helps thinking in terms of positive and negative shapes and light. It also introduces a unique way of painting with watercolors which I suspect would work with fluid acrylics as well.

Light up your paintings big time

Wow! Where was THIS watercolor book hiding? The techniques Roland Roycraft shares here are seemingly easy; splashing or flowing paint onto paper, masking and more. He also gives some very good hints for composition with clear details. Also value sketches (black and white, showing the density of darks and lights. This is a valuable technique for painters.)
I may not choose to imitate Roycraft's style, but I sure will be incorporating these techniques into my next paintings. If you want to improve your watercolor, I can't recommend this book and his other book on nature enough. They are just great.

What an amazing painter!

I bought this book hoping to learn how to paint in a similar style of the author. There is a great deal to learn in this book. It is far beyond my painting abilities at this point, but I love the book and the very detailed explanations of the many wonderful watercolor paintings of Roycraft. He very thoroughly walks you through his painting process, so an already skilled painter will enjoy the challenge of this technique. Knowing how he achieved such beautiful painting puts me in awe of him. Almost the only time Roycraft uses a paint brush is to apply the masking fluid to the painting. The color effects are created by pouring the paints on to the paper, and then manipulating the paper to control the color. He makes several pourings, letting each one dry before applying the next. He is a master at composition. The atmospheric effects he creates through basically using a palette of red, blue and yellow are amazing! The book is filled with beautiful color reproductions of his paintings, and a thorough explanation of how he created each piece.

This is a wonderful book, but beginning painters will find it very difficult to achieve satisfactory paintings using his technique.
