Horribly written, terrible examples, worst textbook I own

I was forced to use this book for my linear algebra course at UW-Madison. When I saw the poor reviews for it, I figured it would be wise to check out some other texts to supplement this and I am so glad that I did. If you are using this book to learn Linear Algebra, you have my sincere condolences because it is terribly written and the examples are in no way useful. I found Schaum's Beginning Linear Algebra and Anton's book on Linear Algebra (from which I believe Kolman and Hill poorly copied) infinitely more helpful. If you MUST use this book, get it from inter-library loan, don't let anyone make a single penny more on it. Other useful sources of information on Linear Algebra include: Gilbert Strang's Linear Algebra book and his lectures [...]

Feels like a draft

The only reason course organizers should ever use this textbook, is if they wish to sardonically punish any student who doesn't come to their lectures. It might be possible that the author is a good mathematician, but he is definitely a terrible teacher.

This entire textbook feels like a draft. It is exceptionally disorganized and unintuitive. Most of the writing is congregated into large paragraphs which makes it a headache to read. It lacks many of the clear examples found in other texts. Some of the examples aren't even examples (example X: " ..... the solution for this example is question 29"). This text is also in some dire need of editing, by the publisher.

In addition to this Kolman has a natural gift in making the most simple ideas seem that much more confusing. I could give many examples, but if you are reading this, it is likely that you have not yet taken this course, so it will be meaningless to you. However, if you are reading through this textbook and you have no idea what is going on, it is not you, it's this book.

If you are having trouble, borrow Elementary Linear Algebra, by Anton & Rorres, from your school library. Or listen to khanacademy (though he doesnt cover every topic in detail).

I threw it out the window

If you are a professor and you use this textbook, it should be evident that you don't know how to teach. This book is terrible to the point that I actually just threw it out the window during the middle of class, went to bookstore and bought a different linear algebra book knowing that ANY book would be better than this one. If it was up to me, any professor who recommends this text should be fired, on the spot without severance.

Half the examples make absolutely no sense, and are so poorly written that the tutors I have asked for help with the material have literally responded "I either don't know linear algebra or this book doesn't make sense." Most of the examples aren't clear enough to follow as the authors feel that taking shortcuts (the most clear sign that someone is terrible at teaching) won't hinder someone who has never seen linear algebra. Kolman & Hill are crooks plain and simple and probably should be put in jail for writing something so terrible.

Do not pay any money for this book. Steal it if you HAVE to, but then again, it's not even worth the paper it is printed on.

Victor S Yeung, MSc (MIT), CFA, CIMA Adv Dip MA, MHKSI, is the Chief Investment Officer of Admiral Investment Limited, where he oversees the firm's operations. Before Admiral, Mr. Yeung was Managing Director, Asia Pacific Securities for LaSalle Investment Management, where he helped manage the Asia Pacific portion of the USD 10 billion Global Real Estate Securities program. Before LaSalle, Mr. Yeung was a research analyst with Morgan Stanley and a risk underwriter with American Express. From the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr. Yeung received three bachelor's degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Management, and Political Science and a master's degree in Political Science. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds the Advanced Diploma in Managerial Accounting with the Chartered Institute of Management Accounting. Mr. Yeung is a frequent guest speaker at real estate conferences around the region, and he lectures for two industry organizations: Asia Pacific Real Estate Association and Hong Kong Securities Institute. The wooden, expository dialogue and obvious setup of the first pages quickly give way to the well-wrought action of the snowballing tragedy. The mood of the narrative is appropriately frenetic, somber, and hopeful by turns. Pfeffer's writing grows legs as the terrifying plot picks up speed, and conversations among the siblings are realistically fluid and sharp-edged. The Moraleses are devout Catholics, and though the church represents the moral center of the novel, Pfeffer doesn't proselytize. The characters evolve as the city decomposes, and the author succeeds in showing their heroism without making them caricatures of virtue. She accurately and knowingly depicts New York City from bodegas to boardrooms, and even the far-fetched science upon which the novel hinges seems well researched. For readers who wondered if things were any better in a bustling city, here is the horrifying answer. On the night the moon tilts, 17-year-old Alex and his younger sisters are alone; their mother is at work, and their father is visiting Puerto Rico. No matter how the kids wish, hope, and pray, their parents don’t return. It’s up to Alex to do what’s best. At first that means bartering for food and batteries and avoiding fighting with the rambunctious Julie—especially after sickly Bri is sent to live at a rural convent. Later it means rescuing Julie from rapists and steering her away from the corpses that litter the street, providing food for rats. Religion is one of the strong threads running through the novel. It would have been interesting to see Alex wrestle more with his staunch Catholicism, but in many ways, the Church anchors the plot. The story’s power, as in the companion book, comes from readers’ ability to picture themselves in a similiar situation; everything Pfeffer writes about seems wrenchingly plausible. Enjoyable

This book is well-written, and I again enjoyed the overall story. I say “again,” however, because this book is very similar to its predecessor, “Life As We Knew It.” I knew nothing about “The Dead & The Gone” other than that it is the second book in the “Last Survivors” series. When I began reading, I was surprised to discover that this book didn’t pick up where “Life As We Knew It” left off, but instead went back to the beginning and followed a completely different family in New York as they experienced the same struggles that occurred from the ‘shifting’ of the moon. I will openly admit that I was a bit disappointed that I wouldn’t be continuing on with Miranda’s story. I enjoyed reading her thoughts and experiencing what she experienced along with her. When everything ended as well as it could (all things considered) I was hopeful that her journey would continue and things would just keep getting better. Or, at the very least, that things would continue to be difficult, but that we’d still be able to experience that journey along with her.

So imagine my shock when the narrative changed and I was suddenly hearing about Alex Morales. It was a challenge to adjust to an entire new family, as I had felt like I was part of Miranda’s family, having been with them from the start. Even more, it was challenging to start at the very beginning, right after the moon had been struck, knowing all the terrible things that were to come. Don’t get me wrong, “The Dead & The Gone” was still very good. It was interesting to experience everything from a different perspective, in a different location, with different people and be able to compare their individual journeys. But I will admit (SPOILER ALERT) that the Morales’ journey was even more trying and heartbreaking, in the end. Nevertheless, the entire concept upon which this series resides is extremely interesting, and I will most definitely continue reading the remaining books.

"The Dead and the Gone" is book 2 in a 4-book (so far) series by Susan Beth Pfeffer which she has named "The Last Survivors." I knew from book 1 that the other books in this series would be a treat but I didn't expect Book 2 to be even better than the first. Miranda, the heroine of "Life as We Knew It," is revealed to be very lucky. She comes from a family of four (a mother and three children) all of whom are able to survive in a village in northeast Pennsylvania for ten months. Alex Morales, the hero of "The Dead and the Gone," is part of a family of six (he is the second of four children) living on the Upper West Side in Manhattan of which only three members are alive at the end of the book. The parents drown on the first night, as a result of the very high tides that result from the moon being closer, and the death of one of Alex's siblings (I won't say which one) represents the climax of the book.

New York goes to hell in a handbasket; death rises around the protagonists like one of the super-tides pulled by the moon. The collision that pushes the moon closer to the earth takes place in mid-May. By mid-July bodies are being left on the street in the Upper West Side. The last delivery of emergency rations to that part of Manhattan takes place on December 9. The last day chronicled is December 29, by which time New York is almost completely abandoned, as opposed to Howell, Pennsylvania, which still had between a quarter and a sixth of its pre-collision population the following March. Things are worse for Alex than for Miranda because while her family had an enormous stockpile of food, his must leave the house constantly to get food.

I thought both the role of both violence and religion during a period of social breakdown were depicted more realistically in this book than in the first, which is the reason I give this book a full five stars. Alex's family is deeply religious and their faith sustains them both literally (they are fed at the parochial school they attend) and spiritually. God and His representatives on earth become the only people Alex can talk to about what he is going through, as he tries to protect his sisters from the full implications of what is happening. Alex's first sister rarely leaves the house after an ill-fated attempt to join a convent, but his second sister becomes a target of men with base desires and nothing to lose by fulfilling them. You know society hasn't completely broken down, however, because social class becomes even more important than it previously was, with the rich and well-connected not having to creep past dead bodies all the time in their part of New York (apparently Midtown), foreshadowing the fourth book, in which (the reviews tell us) a rigid caste system has set in in Tennessee.

Book 3, "This World we Live In," brings together the surviving characters from Book 1 and Book 2 and I can't wait to read it. Fortunately, I ordered all of the last three books in the series at the same time from Amazon, so I don't have to. Five stars.

Great Story...Stupid Kids????

First things first...I am totally enjoying the 2nd installment of the series. However, as well thought out the author has done regarding the "weather events"....she is in a 180 degree difference when it comes to the people-oriented events.

If you have not read any of these series...stop right here.....buy them...read them...and if you want to come back and read my only challenges...do that...

If you have read the books ...well read on and see if you agree:
I have a hard time believing that there was hardly ever an event where these kids walked out the door in desolated NYC and no "bad people" awaited them. ONCE...that's it...once....and the guy never came back...hmmmmmmm...reality check. But let's explain that off that all the bad people have left that section of NY (where they went is anyone's guess)

But the thing that totally eludes me (and my co-listener, Cynthia) is this.....they are on the 12th floor of an apartment building and are only able to get into a handful of apartments in order to grab whatever food is in there. As the story progresses they are teetering on the edge of starvation. If there were just 5 apartments on each floor there would be 60 apartments. They invaded ..a few.
So let's say there are 50 apartments that they didn't go into because they didn't have keys and the doors were made from steel. Um, uh.....the doors may be steel...but the walls are most likely Dri Wall! If anyone reading this has any experience with DriWall...you simply take a hammer or any thing hard and smash it right in. So here we have three kids starving to death....and all around them are apartments that have no one living in them and most likely a total of one year's food there...and instead they go out hunting for trinkets on dead people and stand in line for 5 hours in the freezing cold waiting to get a bag of food....HUH????

OK...So I pretended I was back in the 70s when I could puff on a magic cigarette and suspend all reality...and I get through this glaring stupidity of these kids..I still LOVE the story!!!

The journalists and editors covered are Hodding Carter, Jr. (Greenville Delta Democrat-Times), J. Oliver Emmerich (McComb Enterprise-Journal), Percy Greene (Jackson Advocate), Ira B. Harkey, Jr. (Pascagoula Chronicle), George A. McLean (Tupelo Journal), Bill Minor (New Orleans Times-Picayune), Hazel Brannon Smith (Lexington Adviser), and Jimmy Ward (Jackson Daily News). Their editorial stances run the gamut from moderates such as Minor, Smith, and Carter, Jr., to openly segregationist editors such as Ward and Greene.

The Press and Race follows the press from the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision to 1965, when Congress passed the Voting Rights Act. Those years saw some of the most important events of the civil rights movement-the South's resistance to school desegregation throughout the 1950s and 1960s; the Freedom Rides of 1961; James Meredith's admission into the University of Mississippi in 1962; the assassination of Medgar Evers in 1963; and the events of Freedom Summer in 1964.

These reassessments make clear that the real 'movement' that these editors faced was less the civil rights movement than the white supremacist movement, which ruled the state by violence and espionage. It is partly owing to the work of the best of these editors that a book as candid as this one can be published in the state as a matter of course.

How some Southern editors handled desegregation in the 60s.

These nine essays take a close look at how various editors in Mississippi and the South covered the desegregation crisis of the 60s. The courage displayed by them in reporting the news accurately when the majority of their neighbors and customers felt the opposite way makes for very interesting reading. One is struck by the bravery of these editors in sticking to their sense of fair play, justice and accuracy. They played an important, and little known, role in how desegregation was finally accomplished. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand the South and the events of the 60s there.

So far I have spent hours attempting the cosmetic bag. Myself and another friend that sews have not been able to get past step 3. The measurements just don't match up. Has anyone else made this and do you have any suggestions?

Nice book and some lovely projects. I'm disappointed with the Cosmetic bag though, the measurements just don't add up, and after cutting all my pieces out ready, I can't get past step 3 because of this.
I have enquired about this to the author, and hoping to hear back.

Good book, dated papers

This is a good book on the use of differential equations in modeling in biology. However, the book is written by a mathematician not a biologist and the papers that are featured are now about 10 years out of date. Most if the papers are from science and nature which means that they are often still relevant but not necessarily the easiest for students to follow. But, even with these caveats,I think the book does a nice job of explaining the math and its applications to the life sciences.

About the Author
Paddy Crabbe began his metals life as an LME clerk and progressed to dealing in the 'Ring'. Shortly after that he set up and ran a department trading in physical metals. During which time he created and managed many hedging programmes, which combined pricing on the LME, hedging, physical delivery metal on a CIF programme and delivered works basis and foreign exchange. During that time he taught many producers and consumers how to operate on the LME and delivered lectures about the LME in several countries.

Great book, but the edition advertized on Amazon is an old one.

This book is great, explains the essentials of trading metals on the LME. I am a computer scientist and needed to understand how trading metals works, understand the risks, etc. I believe this book was originally written for university level students.

I borrowed this book from someone and wanted to buy my own version, I have to say I am surprised that the edition sold here is an old version, at least it looks like that from browsing the editor's page on Amazon. The version I borrowed was a 2003 edition and the one here is the original 1998 version, so I ended up not buying if from Amazon and I'm still looking for the 2003 edition.
