A Solid Star Wars Comic for the Kids

It is a busy week in the Star Wars universe for author Ryder Windham. Hot on the heels of the reference book Star Wars: The Complete Vader co-authored with Peter Vilmur, he has a new trade paperback (TPB) release from Dark Horse Comics.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Strange Allies is a continuation of the story of Jedi Padawan Nuru Kungurama and his rough around the edges sidekick Gizz that begin in Windham's young reader book series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Secret Missions.

With so many Jedi Generals occupied with the Clone Wars, assignments that would usually go to Knights or Masters are falling to Jedi in training--in this case, masterless Padawan Nuru Kungurama. Accompanied by his squad of clone troopers and a hulking swoop biker named Gizz, Nuru's job begins as a routine protection detail but soon evolves to include a mystery massacre, the hijacking of a space freighter, and the kidnapping of a group of orphaned younglings!

While I haven't read the Secret Missions series but this comic picks up after those tales and finds Nuru back at the Jedi Temple awaiting his next mission or possible even a new Jedi Master (apparently Nuru's first two Masters are deceased).

At the heart of the story we have two independent operators a Hutt named Noggox and a Neimoidian Pirate Dool Pundar. Noggox is selling droid brains to the Republic for use in its Starships, while Pundar is attempting to abscond with these shipments. In order to continue its war efforts the Republic dispatches Nuru, the Clones of the Breakout Squad and Nuru's two strange sidekicks, Gizz and a droid that wants to become a Jedi, in Cleaver. Along the way we get to see Gizz' difficulties making a love connection and the struggles of the young Nuru to be a leader and his compassion as a Jedi in trying to help orphans.

The comic features some interesting cameos from Yoda, Dexter, Palpatine, Kit Fisto, Count Dooku and Savage Opress. In fact this comic actually contains the story that was released on Free Comic Book Day, Opress Unleashed.

The comic itself is targeted at a younger audience (@8 year old reading level) and is reasonably priced at $7.99. If you are used to reading the adult novels or even reading other Dark Horse Star Wars titles, then this book will probably leave you wanting.

The art in the book is by Ben Dewey and its a rough style, it lacks some of the realism and fine detail that I like to see in comic art. But it isn't really a postiive or a negative, it just is what it is.

My favorite part of the comic is one of the orphans, a young Trandoshan named Charky. He basically carried this book for me and was very amusing and very rude. There is also a fun little scene in swamp when one of the villains gets their just deserts.

While it is cool to see a Chiss Jedi and it is always fun to see some of Savage Opress in action, this story was just a little to straight forward and lacked the real emotional depth a mature audience expects. If you are younger or have young kids that are fans of The Clone Wars animated series, then I would recommend this comic as a way for them to slip there toes into the Expanded Universe. There are enough connections to TCW series that it will fit conceptually for kids.

I really like the idea of this Chiss Jedi and would be interested to see Nuru integrated into TCW series, after all after they start building Chiss character models, how far away can Captain Thrawn be from making an appearance?

In the end, Strange Allies is a solid comic for the kids, but will probably disappoint adult readers. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

It was good.

I had wanted to get this for a while since I missed getting it at my local comic book store when it originally came out. Wanted to read on Gizz and Nuru some more since I knew of them originally already from Star Wars Tales #4 (I'd like to think Spiker and Nuru are one in the same person). For how much it cost, it was worth the wait. Not a long story but was expecting that but still good read.

Return of Gizz in artform!

Loved seeing Breakout squad and Nuru in a graphic novel. Especially since it is such a long wait in between his novels. Not to mention seeing Gizz again from Shadows of the Empire. A little cameo from Savage Opress that those of you who where lucky enough to pick up the free comic book on free comic day will recognize. That comic is about part way through this story so now I understand it better than when I first read it. Not sure when all these events take place according to a timeline but it was fun to read. Gizz was great in this series and about a third of the way through he starts to shine as the major character. A great entertaining read with great characters and superb artwork. Enjoy!

I just received the book today and finished it by tonight but I enjoyed the book about thebig bad man who in the end was lonely and would do anything to get some love by a young man. I liked it and hopefully you will too. Lots of sex scenes in this book.

illustrations sparse but the story is thoughtful

The illustrations leave something to be desired -- much less detail than I am used to with this sort of book but better than some of the poorly drawn things I have seen. The story too is rather sparse in terms of words but the panels and the events are rather intense. I had hoped things would be a bit more S&M than it was but overall I was pleased.

Poor Quality

The information in the book is terrific, if you can keep the book together. This book is junk compared to previous additions. The pages fall right out, everyone in my class is experiencing the same problem. This is a book a student is going to want to keep, but can't because it is so poorly made.

Canadian VS American Editions

This is a great learning tool for the student or at home learner. BE AWARE that there are two different editions....one for the Canadian Market and one for the American Market. The Canadian version has a lime with a spoon of lime zest on the front cover. The American one is the artichoke. There are differences in the submitted recipies i.e. from Canadian Chefs

Excellent text for basic skills.

Although I was also disappointed that the book did not come with the CD, I have found it a great read with a wealth of useful information presented in an organized, easy to read fashion. This is a staple book used in culinary programs, and I will be keeping this book long after I graduate. I have recommended it to friends who want to learn to be better cooks without going to school for it. The chef who is teaching one of my culinary classes told us that if you only have two books on cooking, he'd recommend this one and The Joy of Cooking. Another great feature of this book is that the pages are coated (that's what makes the book so incredibly heavy) so that they last longer when you inevitably spill something on them while using the book in the kitchen. I agree that a spiral binding might have been a better choice but I have mostly found the book will lay flat no matter where you need it kept open to.

Most Helpful and Applicable to Our Start-up's Financing Scenarios

I purchased this book shortly after it was published, read it, put it away, picked it back up again, put it away… I find it a valuable and concise resource.

Briefly, my story – our Health IT company has been angel funded for the last couple of years and we are ready to move to the next step. This may be additional angel monies, pitching to VC’s, or pursuing a business development deal with larger health IT company. I read the book initially right after we secured our funding (and honestly wish I had read it before). My background is in publishing and for the last 18 years, healthcare software with a larger company and more recently a development role in a prior start-up.

Besides being very well written, comprehensive yet to the point, it is composed in way that is motivating because it encourages you to think from the other side of the table. How can you best structure and package your start-up’s financial strategy given your talent core, your market, your opportunity and your strengths to best frame it for the person who writes your next check? How do we go about building the necessary connections and relationships required in this arena to best ensure our success? Certainly no book can give you all the answers, but Venture Capital for Dummies encourages you be analytical and consider various points of view and pathways.

The book challenges you to think about what funding paths you can take based upon where you are in the start-up continuum, and what outcomes you might expect based upon those choices. Admittedly, we are in the throes of that decision at this point in time. As I read and reflect, I’m better equipped to apply the concepts and processes to my situation, and to think more practically/strategically about the business and how to prepare for the next phase of financing.

Whether you need a one-stop reference, or are inclined to read cover-to-cover, I recommend purchasing this book before you organize and move forward with your start up.

Very good reference guide

Great resource for the ins and outs of Venture Capital, the mindset of a Venture Capitalist, the types of companies that VC's look for, and how to communicate with them. It's a typical Dummies book because it presents the material in a very easy to understand manner, but this could be a text book at a top MBA program because it's so thorough. It talks about alternatives to VC funding such as Angels and Crowdfunding, deal structuring, company valuation, negotiating with VC's, and more. This should be required reading for every entrepreneur.
