A lot of fun!

I got this book on my Kindle and it was quite an entertaining read! I had NO idea that people in Australia had the same sort of UFO and other paranormal experiences as we do here in the USA - I guess I thought we here in the USA had a monopoly on weird. Pinkney has a smooth journalistic style and has his facts down - inasmuch as 'the facts' may be somewhat subjective. If you're looking for a review of all that's weird in the Land Down Under, I would recommend this author!

Loved This Book!

I was so excited to hear that Ryan O'Leary was going to do a Prequel for the J Closet series. Like most say, it's nice to read a book like this from a male's perspective. While the sex scenes were hot at usual, Ryan takes you on a emotional romantic journey. I loved learning more about both J and Travis. Travis is every girl's dream. He's confident, sexy, romantic, treats J like gold, but at the same time he stands up for himself and doesn't let her get away with everything. J is beautiful, sassy and confident, but it was also nice to see the raw sides of her, she's a little broken and that's ok. In Travis' eyes, despite the broken pieces, she is perfect and he is willing to be there for her and do whatever it takes to keep the love of his life. This is a must read, the ending will make you smile and take your breath away guaranteed. Great job Ryan!! Keep it up!

Just Can't get enough!

I have been following Ryan's writing career for some time now and I have read most of Ryan's stories/books. I was initially drawn to him because of his fun and flirty writing style and interactions with his fans.

I was excited to read this one since it is the beginning of Travis and J's story from J's Closet. Ryan did not disappoint (not that I thought he would!) I was so wrapped up in J's closet wen I read them that I couldn't help wonder what piece of clothing was next and due to that I NEEDED to know how they met and what made their HEA so great. I was beyond excited when I learned this book was in the works. Ryan has this way of sucking the reader in because of the perspective he writes from (male perspective). Travis Is every girls dream man and J is feisty. (Anyone else wonder if maybe Ryan in many ways is Travis? Hmmmmm....a real life Travis? It is possible, just follow his page and it is easy to see his personality).

This book is fun, flirty and H.O.T.

If you've read Ryan O'Leary's J's Closet Volume 1, you've already met J and Travis and know how strong their bond is and that they've found their HEA with each other. In "Happy to Be Stuck with You", you'll find out how it all began and what struggles they went through to become the strong, connected couple they are today.

For anyone who doesn't believe a man can write an emotionally charged romance, you just need to read this latest release from Ryan O'Leary to know it can and does happen. While it's labeled an erotic romance, I found myself affected most by the emotions that Travis experienced throughout the novel. J definitely put her share of hurdles in their path to happiness, and despite it all, Travis really didn't give up on her, or them.

So many novels of this genre are written from the female characters perspective and it's refreshing to have the male characters perspective, written by a man.

J and Travis are one of my favorite fictional couples, and I look forward to more from J's Closet and Ryan O'Leary.

Jonathan Anomaly is Lecturer in the Duke-UNC program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.

Geoffrey Brennan is Research Professor of Political Science at Duke University, Professor of Philosophy at UNC Chapel Hill, and Professor of Economics at the Australian National University. He is the coauthor of Explaining Norms (OUP, 2013) and The Economy of Esteem (OUP, 2004).

Michael C. Munger is Professor of Political Science and Economics at Duke University. He is the coauthor of Choosing in Groups: Analytical Politics Revisited (2015).

Geoffrey Sayre-McCord is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at UNC Chapel Hill and the editor of Hume: Moral Philosophy (2006).

All four authors teach in and are members of the Duke-UNC program in philosophy, politics, and economics.

This book was......WOW, I don't know how else to describe it but WOW!! The book was so good and such an easy read I couldn't put it down. If you love a good adventure, this book is for you. I look forward to reading more from this author in the VERY near future!!!

Good plot.

I enjoyed reading it with my kids (they loved it as well). It's a good book for all ages. The author came up with a creative idea allowing characters to pass between two worlds that share the same geographical features. He works with that idea well as he develops the plot for the trilogy of saving the main character's sister while at the same time defeating the evil villain of the parallel world. The book also teaches good morals, including the importance of not turning ones back on a companion in need. I look forwarding to reading the next book in the series.

A Life-Long Exploration of Self

"And they are made just like anything else that has ever been made in this country -- by hard effort and that's the price we all have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal." Bennis and Goldsmith agree. Theirs is literally a WORK book. The material is organized within these seven chapters:
Leadership for a Successful Future ["Followers, who are often partners in an endeavor, look to leaders to interpret reality, explain the present, and paint a picture of the future."]
How to Use This Workbook ["We are introducing a different path to leadership development -- one that has twists and turns. It may not take a reader on a direct route to a finite end-place."]
The Leadership Crisis ["Where have all the leaders gone?...In the past two decades, there has been a high turnover, an appalling mortality -- both occupational and actuarial -- among leaders."]
Knowing Yourself ["If we have a clear awareness of who we are, we can develop the habit of staying tuned to what we say and do."]

To their excellent suggestions I would add Tichy's The Leadership Engine because, as Goldsmith observes, "Our book proposes that in our world of startling changes and overwhelming challenges, leadership is needed at every level and in every nook and corner of our organizations. We can only have the leadership we need if individuals are encouraged, motivated and supported to create themselves as leaders on a day by day basis." I also recommend Fitz-enz's The ROI of Human Capital because, without effective leadership, no organization can possibly derive greatest benefit from its most valuable asset. Again quoting Goldsmith, "The insights, theories, exercises, and tools included within our book guide leadership explorations and discoveries by staff, managers and executives at all levels of their organizations and in all areas of their lives."
For whom will this excellent book be most helpful? First, for senior-level executives who are already leaders of others and feel the need for what could perhaps be called a "tune-up" of basic principles. Also, for those who aspire to be leaders and are willing and able to complete the exercises with both rigor and (more importantly) candor. Finally, for students of business now in preparation for careers which may soon begin. (This book would be an excellent holiday or graduation gift.) Bennis and Goldsmith conclude as follows: "We hope you will continue to develop what you have begun in the learning partnership we have created here together. We look forward to knowing you more directly in the future. Empowerment leads to quality and ultimately to love of ourselves, of our work, and of life. More we cannot wish you." Nor can I.

A straight-forward look at Leadership

Clarity. Simple, straight-forward, clarity. In the hustle and jive of selling leadership, this book stands out. As the authors point out, leadership has become a growth industry. In our hunger for answers to increasingly complex problems, we consume vast quantities of pretty unsubstantial literature on leadership. "Learning to Lead" brings a clarity to the matter of leadership development that is refreshing. The authors don't try to boil a complex subject down to aphorisms, but they do succeed in clarifying the route to developing leadership. They focus their efforts on exercises that will test and reinforce an aspiring leaders ability to know themselves, to create and communicate a vision, to maintain trust through integrity (couldn't a few of our leaders use that!) and realizing intention through action. Simple. Clear. Straightforward.
The exercises, although mostly paper and pencil activities that anyone could do without cooperating partners, are appropriate for the format of the book. Again they seek to clarify our vision of what we can do, even if we are not Gandhi, Martin Luthor King or Napoleon, to exercise leadership in our lives and our communities. This book is both inspirational and immanently practical. I awarded this book only 4 stars simply for the lack of graphics and visual content. It could have been more effective if it had been developed with visual learners in mind.

This is a book which is incredibly hands on and easy to access. Bennis focuses on the essentials of leadership and unlike so many others, he gives concrete tangible steps for people to take to help them discover their own leadership potential. It is useful for individuals and for groups. It has application for people from all walks of life, at all stages of life and at all stages of personal development!

A very diverting and enjoyable travel/ memoir book

A highly readable and fascinating insight into the road and the lands across which it was cut. The narrative is very easy to read and portrays a vivid picture of what it was like for a British administration official (he was a New Zealander) to have to work in Iraq, and be transferred to Kurdistan and how he had to "cut his way" through tribal societies to ensure he got the job done. Having myself traversed a good part of the Hamilton Road in 2015, I can attest to the beauty (in Spring especially) and the front cover is a typical mountain scene...It is really not difficult to imagine as you wind your way from Erbil on the hotter lower plains, albeit above much of even hotter Iraq, through the roaring mountains in the west and lazy goat-herds still dotting the hillsides, that nothing much has actually changed since the book was written. Certainly a few holiday towns like Shaklawa have risen into more scattered concrete houses dotting the hillsides but beyond this the lands sweep into beautiful vistas cut across by rivers and boulder strewn mountainsides. Also it passes near ancient Neanderthal cave territories of "Shanidar Man". What a feat to cut the road at a time when motorcars had not been seen there! It is an entertaining read (there are a few black and white photos in my Indian reprinted copy found in Erbil Souk) and with the typical dry humour that one might expect.

Keeping a stiff upper lip in the mountains of Kurdistan

"I looked and was satisfied that all was as it should be, and signaled to the men that it was done. And up from the depths of the canyon there arose the exultant roar of men's voices that reached almost to the mountain-tops." - Hamilton's recollection of the moment when the Rowanduz River Gorge was successfully bridged

After the First World War, the League of Nations assigned the subject territories and overseas colonies of the vanquished nations to the governmental administration of the victors. Such lands were known as "mandates." Mesopotamia (Iraq), formerly a province of the Ottoman Empire, was given to the United Kingdom as a Class A Mandate, and the U.K. administered the area from 1920 to 1932, when Iraq itself became a member of the League.

In 1927, New Zealand-born and trained civil engineer, Archibald Milne Hamilton, was sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Public Works Department. Soon after his arrival, he was given sole responsibility for completion of the Arbil-Rowanduz road through the mountains of Kurdistan, an area heretofore inaccessible by motor transport and barely so by animal caravan. The most daunting obstacle to the road's completion was the dramatically rugged Rowanduz River Gorge, through which the paved highway needed to be constructed. It took Hamilton four years to do it, but it was ultimately a miracle of contemporary engineering.

ROAD THROUGH KURDISTAN is Hamilton's personal account of the project's undertaking and achievement.

Written in the matter-of-fact, detailed, markedly lucid (and always engaging) style that one might expect from a trained engineer, Hamilton's narrative is of a job well-done with a multinational workforce drawn from historically antagonistic factions and amidst terribly difficult terrain and always-dodgy tribal support. Occasionally - and all too infrequently by my mind - the author displays a dry wit, as when he describes the process of calculating his workmen's pay:

"I sat in my little tent, and computed the amounts due to each man according to his attendance and his rate of pay, while scorpions and large brown beetles clinging to the sides of the tent took stock of my columns of figures."

Though arguments can and will rage over the benefits, or lack thereof, of imperialism in general to the lands and societies of the ruled, there can be little argument, I think, that Hamilton and his road represents British imperialism at its finest. The King could never have stood prouder than after the service of this fair-minded, generous, and extremely capable servant of the Empire. Honor is due.

ROAD THROUGH KURDISTAN contains thirty-three photographs and two maps.

And, for those so interested, the author's observations about the Kurdish people will perhaps serve as the beginning of an appreciation for the nature, strength, and resilience of their independent spirit which has proved so problematic for their neighbors - the Iraqis, Iranians and Turks - who even today would wish to bring them to heel, but can't.
