Polygamy in America isn't taken seriously. Part of that is because basic societal rules brand it anathema. Most mainstream religions chime in, denigrating plural marriage as immoral. And yet, history is full of examples of places and peoples in which having multiple spouses not only worked, but was taken for granted. So why is it that things changed?

There are many arguments, but the author wishes to propose that fairy tales killed multiple spouse marriages. Why? Because the popular belief evolved that there is but one, true love for each human being on Earth. And once found, each can love no other. The church hopped on board with that, despite the fact that most holy books are full of plural marriages, and the Catholic Church marries all it's nuns to the same groom.

But the author is willing to bet that you, like him, have detected the capacity in humans to love multiple people at the same time. Children are a good example. If you have more than one child, you love all of them. You don't love them equally, meaning the exact same way, but love them you do. Why, then, cannot you love more than one person romantically as well, each having their own unique thread of love?

And that is what this book is about - an attempt to frame a forbidden romance in a way that the average person can identify with, and imagine him or herself within. Come and experience what it could be like if we were allowed to love to our full potential. Yes, it is fiction. Yes it is a fantasy. But I bet you the price of the book that you'll think of at least two people you wish you could be in love with, in the way described in the story.

Bob MacAllister, trying to escape a failed romance, takes off into the unknown, where fate leads him to the Simmons Apple Orchard, where he is taken in by Lynne, the single mom of 13-year-old Jill. Over the next five years the three of them become a family, and then more, somehow, as both Bob and Lynne heal from the slings and arrows of damaged love, and Jill begins to explore the big, wide world of her own feelings. Nothing seems to go as expected, though. Jill has a boyfriend, but they don't act like a couple. Bob lives in the house with the women, but is really just an employee. Coincidence, like waves in the ocean, toss the three this way and that, until suddenly a most unlikely destination is arrived at - a destination that none of them would have dreamed could exist, where two women can love one man, and he can give them both what they need emotionally and physically.

Warning: This book contains adult language and sex scenes inappropriate for those under the age of eighteen.

From the Inside Flap
Lubrican: An word found in Middle English or Middle Irish texts, generally understood to mean an invisible sprite who excites the lusts of the unwary. This sprite eventually came to be known as "Leprechaun" and its description changed with the spelling. While leprechauns may grant you wishes or pots of gold, if you catch them, the only remaining Lubrican still offers you treats that may inflame your libido.

Can't Beat Bob
By Grammie Lynda
This book is really great. Once I read my first book by Lubrican I ended up buying 27 (yes, I counted) more of his books. His books are fun and sexy. Who can resist a man who "makes loving fun". I guess I am officially a fan. Try it. You won't be sorry, but your pocketbook might.

Stepping beyond the social envelope
By Al Gregory
This was another great book by Robert Lubrican that drew erotic images within a believable story. The hero in this tale is a heartbroken young man who just stumbles into the purview of an attractive widow and her precocious daughter. What develops in this titilating encounter is a permanent relationship that pushes the envelope of mutual trust, love and sex! A well-thought out plot with exciting twists that you wonder how the author will resolve. And 'resolve' he does with graceful, but humorous aplomb. A memorable and delightful read.

Another Enjoyable Collection
By Diana
I read Rossis's Power of Six, his other short story collection, and got a kick out of the unique tales. Infinite Waters didn't disappoint, offering a wide variety of speculative fiction stories, all well-paced with engaging characters and unique twists. I read them over two nights and liked these tales as much as the first collection. The stories range from grotesque to sweet with a few thought-provoking dynamics tossed in. The story Two's a Crowd is a particularly memorable look at the dynamics of human perception. I received an advanced readers copy of this book and was not asked by the author for a review.

A Master Class in Short Fiction
By Nat Russo
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Nicholas Rossis is a master of the craft. Each of these short stories is handcrafted with the utmost attention to every facet of good story telling. But more, Nicholas finds a way to wrap the collection in a "meta" story. It was a brilliant way of grouping together a set of seemingly unrelated short stories. I read each of these over the course of a couple of days, and I found myself looking forward to coming home so I could dig into the next story.

In short fiction, you don't have a lot of room for error. Every sentence, every word should have to fight for its existence, and Nicholas handles this expertly. Each story pulls you in to its unique little universe and takes you on a ride where the tracks are hidden, and you can't see the corners up ahead.

If you want to experience what good short fiction is like, grab a copy of Infinite Waters.

A Special Treat
By Sue Coletta
I bought this author's children's story, Runaway Smile--which I adore--and when he completed Infinite Waters he sent me a copy. Speculative Fiction is not my usual genre, but I still really enjoyed these short stories. The writing is clean, the stories fun and entertaining. My favorite story is Infinite Waters. It's about a fortuneteller who has an aspiring author as a client. No spoilers, but I will say this story runs through the book so don't think, as I initially did, that it ends after the initial storyline. It's a cool technique; slipping in pieces of the plotline in between the other stories. Infinite Waters also had a cool ending that I didn't see coming. Overall, this a great read...speculative fiction fan or no.

Bed Number Ten, by Sue Baier, Mary Zimmeth Schomaker

A patient's personal view of long term care.

Seen through the eyes of a patient totally paralyzed with Guillain-Barr syndrome, this moving book takes you through the psychological and physical pain of an eleven month hospital stay. BED NUMBER TEN reads like a compelling novel, but is entirely factual.

You will meet:

The ICU staff who learned to communicate with the paralyzed woman - and those who did not bother.

The physicians whose visits left her baffled about her own case.

The staff and physicians who spoke to her and others who did not recognize her presence.

The nurse who tucked Sue tightly under the covers, unaware that she was soaking with perspiration.

The nurse who took the time to feed her drop by drop, as she slowly learned how to swallow again.

The physical therapist who could read her eyes and spurred her on to move again as if the battle were his own.

In these pages, which reveal the caring, the heroism, and the insensitivity sometimes found in the health care fields, you may even meet people you know.

From Publishers Weekly
A Houston housewife, mother of two teenage daughters, Baier endured a virtual living death when she contracted Guillain-Barre syndrome. Suddenly and without apparent cause, her body was entirely immobilized; meanwhile her mind remained alert and her nervous system lost none of its sensitivity to pain. At first able to communicate only by moving her eyelids and laboriously "spelling" key words, she slowly improved until she was released from the hospital and returned home. Herefive years after the trauma, which has left her handicappedshe thanks her husband, family and members of her church and community for the support that compensated for bouts of depression and the occasional callousness of hospital personnel. Baier's chronicle of courage offers hope to victims of the catastrophic disease.

From Library Journal
Guillain-Barre is a rare syndrome that can occur after a viral infection, causing degeneration of nerve sheaths and resulting in temporary paralysis. Baier chronicles her severe bout with this puzzling illness and her almost year-long stay in the hospital, most of which was spent in bed number ten of the intensive care unit. She was completely helpless and unable to move except for her eyelids; her mind remained clear but she could communicate with the sometimes unsympathetic staff only by blinking her eyes. Like other books of this genre, Bed Number Ten serves as an expression of gratitude to the many people who helped the author recover. At the same time, Baier provides a graphic personal view of one patient's experience with modern medicine in an ICU. A portion of this book appeared in Family Circle magazine. ..."offers invaluable messages for anyone dealing with dependency, suffering, loneliness, helplessness, or acute or chronic debilitating diseases - in short, for anyone taking care of others. No one reading this book will ever again regard the helpless or incommunicative patient the same way."- New England Journal of Medicine

I can relate as a "Fellow Comrade"
By Luther B. Yount
I read this book after spending five weeks in ICU, followed by four months in a Rehab Center...recuperating from Guillain Barre Syndrome. I can relate to how she had favorite nurses...so did I, and being totally paralyzed it may be hard for others to understand just how much that extra little fluff of the pillow makes after laying for eight hours in the same position. My body was very sensative, and any movement was painful...I can imagine how much more painful it was with her. The things I found hard to understand in the book were the thoughts she had in her day to day activities....oh, I would be driving by the supermarket now, on my way to pick up my best friend Bonnie...these thoughts are just hard for me to believe. I know my thoughts were like "when will these leg spasms quit...when will I walk again...when will the aching in my legs get better...when will I get out of here....how much is this costing....when is my next therapy" these were my thoughts. The book does give a good view of just how devastating GBS can be. For me....It will be 4 years this Christmas since my GBS attack, and I am still not well. From the waist up I am about 95%, and from the waist down I am about 50% which includes leg and feet numbness, muscle spasms/cramps,joint pain, and stiffness. But I feel blessed to have back as much as I do, and I pray that God will give me the strength and courage to continue my recuperation from this catastrophic illness.

Citizen of the World: The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Volume One: 1919-1968, by John English

One of the most important, exciting biographies of our time: the definitive, major two-volume biography of Pierre Elliott Trudeau – written with unprecedented, complete access to Trudeau’s enormous cache of private letters and papers.

Bestselling biographer John English gets behind the public record and existing glancing portraits of Trudeau to reveal the real man and the multiple influences that shaped his life, providing the full context lacking in all previous biographies to-date.

As prime minister between 1968 and 1984, Trudeau, the brilliant, controversial figure, intrigued Canadians and attracted international attention as no other Canadian leader has ever done. Volume One takes us from his birth in 1919 to his election as leader in 1968.

Born into a wealthy family in Montreal, Trudeau excelled at the best schools, graduating as a lawyer with conservative, nationalist and traditional Catholic views. But always conscious of his French-English heritage, desperate to know the outside world, and an adventurer to boot, he embarked on a pilgrimage of discovery – first to Harvard and the Sorbonne, then to the London School of Economics and, finally, on a trip through Europe, the Middle East, India and China. He was a changed man when he returned – socialist in his politics, sympathetic to labour, a friend to activists and writers in radical causes. Suddenly and surprisingly, he went to Ottawa for two mostly unhappy years as a public servant in the Privy Council Office. He frequently shocked his colleagues when, on the brink of a Quebec election, for example, he departed for New York or Europe on an extended tour. Yet in the 1950s and 60s, he wrote the most important articles outlining his political philosophy.

And there were the remarkable relationships with friends, women and especially his mother (whom he lived with until he was middle-aged). He wrote to them always, exchanging ideas with the men, intimacies with the women, especially in these early years, and lively descriptions of his life. He even recorded his in-depth psychoanalysis in Paris. This personal side of Trudeau has never been revealed before – and it sheds light on the politician and statesman he became.

Volume One ends with his entry into politics, his appointment as Minister of Justice, his meeting Margaret and his election as leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada. There, his genius and charisma, his ambition and intellectual prowess, his ruthlessness and emotional character and his deliberate shaping of himself for leadership played out on the national stage and, when Lester B. Pearson announced his retirement as prime minister in 1968, there was but one obvious man for the job: Pierre Trudeau.

In 1938 Trudeau began a diary, which he continued for over two years. It is detailed, frank, and extraordinarily revealing. It is the only diary in Trudeau’s papers, apart from less personal travel diaries and an agenda for 1937 that contains some commentary. His diary expresses Trudeau’s own need to chronicle the moments of late adolescence as he tried to find his identity. It begins on New Year’s Day 1938 with the intriguing advice: “If you want to know my thoughts, read between the lines!”

Review
“A sensitive, thoughtful, and beautifully written biography of one of Canada's most intriguing figures by a leading Canadian historian. This first installment shows that if anyone can unpick the puzzle of Pierre Trudeau and help us to understand both his many-faceted personality and his impact on his times, it is surely John English.”
—Dr. Margaret MacMillan

“[This biography] is brilliant, so perceptive about Trudeau, so well informed on the context, so beautifully written..” —Ramsay Cook, General Editor of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography

Chapter One

Two Worlds

The Great War was over; the times tasted bitter. Influenza came back with the soldiers and killed more at home than had died in the trenches. Like the war, it preferred the young to the old. Death usually came quickly as the victims suffocated in a blood-tinged froth that sometimes gushed grotesquely from their faces. As winter became spring in 1919, theatres stayed empty. Men and women entered public places warily, concealing their faces behind gauze masks. The plague invaded private spaces, compelling isolation and reflection. What, then, did Grace Elliott Trudeau and her husband, Joseph-Charles-mile, think when she learned she was pregnant in Montreal in mid-winter 1919? Pregnancy was dangerous in normal times, but the influenza surely terrified her as her body began to swell with her second child.

The twentieth century had so far been a great disappointment – especially for francophone Canadians. There was some excitement and hope when it began with Canada’s first French-speaking prime minister, Wilfrid Laurier, in power, and an increasingly prosperous economy. The great transformation of Western society that occurred as electricity, steamships, telephones, railways, and automobiles upset the balance of the Victorian age profoundly affected the world of the young Trudeaus. In Quebec, as elsewhere, people were in motion, leaving the familiar fields of rural life and traditional crafts for the cities that were exploding beyond their pre-industrial core. In Montreal, the population rose from 267,730 in 1901 to 618,506 in 1921. The rich had clustered together, initially in mansions in the “Golden Square Mile” along Sherbrooke Street and north up the southern slope of Mount Royal, while the poor spread out below them and in the east end. It was said in 1900 that the Square Mile contained three-quarters of Canada’s millionaires. Stephen Leacock, who knew them well, commented, “The rich in Montreal enjoyed a prestige in that era that not even the rich deserve.”

Unfortunately, the rich were nearly entirely English; the poor, overwhelmingly French. When the French lived mainly in the villages, the gap was less obvious. In the city, it sowed the seeds of deep discontent. And, as new immigrants, mainly Jewish, flowed in from continental Europe, new tensions emerged in the more diverse city.

Even before the war, foreign visitors sensed trouble. In 1911 the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig, after a visit to Montreal, said that all reasonable men should advise the French to abandon their resistance to assimilation. They were fast becoming simply an episode in history.4 Among francophones in Quebec, the challenge of the new century brought an increasingly nationalist response, particularly when English-Canadian politicians became entangled in the British imperialism that marked the years before the Great War. By then there was a new prime minister, Robert Borden, and the voice of French Canada in the federal government became faint. And in 1914 the war divided the country as never before between the French and the others.

Once again, it seemed that a bargain had been broken. Now leader of the official Opposition, Wilfrid Laurier supported the war, along with the French Catholic Church. Even Henri Bourassa, who had founded the nationalist newspaper Le Devoir and become the vocal spokesperson for francophone rights throughout Canada, kept his silence. He and the bishops went along because Borden promised there would be no conscription, but, three years later, conscription was proclaimed, accompanied by vitriolic attacks in English Canada on the French in Quebec. In the bitter and violent Canadian election in 1917, francophones voted overwhelmingly for Laurier’s Liberals, who opposed conscription, while anglophones responded by backing a coalition composed of English-speaking Liberals and Conservatives. There were riots in Montreal and deaths in Quebec City. In 1919 Laurier died, then depression struck, while, at Versailles, the victors divided the spoils even as the world began to understand that the war to end all wars had not done so.

In their modest but comfortable row home at 5779 Durocher Avenue in the new suburb of Outremont, the Trudeaus could find some comfort. Outremont was neighbour to Mount Royal and, in population, split between residents of French and British origin, along with a substantial number of Jews. They lived far from the crowded tenements of the city below the hill, where death often came for both mother and child during pregnancy.5 Charles and Grace had married on May 11, 1915, and she had become pregnant soon after with an infant who did not survive.6 In 1918 she gave birth to a daughter, Suzette. Charles already had good reason not to enlist and, after the Military Service Act became law in 1917, to avoid conscription.

When the Trudeaus married, Grace, in common with other Quebec women of the time, acquired the same legal rights as minors and idiots. Her husband owed her protection in return for her submission. Yet Grace had her own sources of strength. Her father, a substantial businessman of United Empire Loyalist stock, had sent his daughter to Dunham Ladies’ College in the Eastern Townships, where she had acquired an education in literature, classics, and etiquette that few girls in Quebec possessed. She knew French, her mother’s tongue, as well as English, which she and Charles chose to speak most often at home. Like Charles, she was Roman Catholic and devout.Though not wealthy in the first years of their marriage, the Trudeaus had the means to hire country girls to help with household tasks.

Assisted by a midwife at home, Grace gave birth to Joseph-Philippe-Pierre-Yves-Elliott Trudeau on a warm fall day, October 18, 1919. The parents immediately chose Pierre from his multiple names, though he, later, took a long time to make up his mind which name he favoured. His mother probably reflected the original intention when she wrote in his “Baby Book” Joseph Pierre Yves Philip Elliott Trudeau. Years later, when he was quizzed about it, Trudeau himself could not recall the correct order. He weighed eight pounds four ounces and, from the beginning, suffered from colic. The crying finally stopped when he had an operation for adenoids in May 1920. Along with Pierre’s physical health, Grace recorded his spiritual growth in a diary. It began with his baptism, followed by the moment in October 1921 when two-year-old “Pierre made the sign of the cross.” In December he began to say his prayers alone and “blessed Papa, Mama, Suzette etc.”Six months later the proud mother recorded that her precociously bilingual child knew “Sing a Song of Sixpence,” “Little Jack Horner,” “Au clair de la lune,” and “Dans sa cabane.” She continued dutifully to collect mementos of Pierre’s life – school essays, marks, news clippings, and letters–until he finally left her home in the 1960s as a middle-aged man.

The Making of a Unique Prime Minister
By Mike B
This is the first volume of John English's biography of the life of Pierre Trudeau. It deals with the period up to when Trudeau was elected to lead the Liberal party in 1968 after the resignation of Prime Minister Pearson (it does not concern itself with the later Canadian election of 1968; this is in the second volume).

Somewhat like the biography of Max and Monique Nimni it paints a portrait, for Trudeau's early formative years, of a nationalistic and fervent Catholic who was right-wing, bordering on the fascist. It also gives us a view of his rich and privileged life - a perpetual and traveling student. But Trudeau was always open to the wider world even though his road to it was long, taking him over thirty years to really embrace it. Up to that time Trudeau was so conservative that he would ask Catholic priests for permission to read controversial books. He was cocooned in the insular world of Quebec and was hardly aware of the onset of World War II. He opposed conscription due mostly to the influence of Quebec Catholicism. In the U.S. he would have been considered an isolationist, except that Trudeau's isolationism lasted to the early 1950's.

It is when he attended Harvard, then schools in Paris and London that he finally came to realize the extent of his Quebec parochialism. Mr. English depicts well how Trudeau became more and more like the title of his book - "Citizen of the World".

One senses throughout - even though now and then we are aware of Trudeau's deficiencies (such as his infatuation with left-wing dictatorships - from Stalin to Castro), the esteem with which the author regards Trudeau. And one comes to admire throughout the pages of this book Trudeau's eloquence, fortitude and magnetism. This is certainly reflected throughout his many years as Prime Minister - that marked him as the most phenomenal of the modern era. In this book we are given a perspective of the individualism of Trudeau which made him such a formidable and erudite figure.

Two of my favourite Trudeau quotes (from page 471 of my volume)
- "the state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation". This was said in 1967; can one imagine a U.S. presidential contender saying such today?!
- "what may be sin to some is not law for all".

Superb review of North America's Most Brilliant Politician of the 20th century"
By Daniel A. Metraux
John English has written a detailed and fascinating biography of Pierre Elliot Trudeau, the most remarkable Canadian of the 20th century. English was granted access to Trudeau's huge personal archives and is thus able to produce a rich and detailed study of this fascinating man. English's account of Trudeau's evolution from a conservative Quebec nationalist to a
very liberal Canadian federalist is the most important contribution of this impressive book. As an American who admires Trudeau, this book is a god-send!

About the Author
Mark Barnette brings to the epic of The Empire Chronicles a lifetime of travel, research and inquiry. As a journalist and international educator, he has spent years studying mankind's potential, as well as our ancient past, in order to bring you this glimpse of what might have been, and what might yet be. As a youth he wrote continuously, and dreamed of becoming an author; a desire he put on hold when he enlisted in the military. After serving in the US Air Force, he attended Kent State University, earning degrees in Journalism and Political Science. Upon graduation, Mr. Barnette joined the Atlanta Journal, but soon left the newspaper to begin his life's work as an educator. Over the next twenty years he worked in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and London, England as a faculty member, academic dean, and college president. In 1995, he left London, moving to the United Arab Emirates to co-found the American University in Dubai. After successfully opening the university, Mr. Barnette returned to the United States, settling with his family in South Florida. Now Mr. Barnette has returned to his creative roots; The Empire Chronicles is the result.

An interesting first novel
By BrianB
This is a science fiction adventure story. It is a good adventure, which kept my interest throughout. I believe that it is a first novel, and it represents a good first effort. The author includes a fair amount of myth, history, geography and science, which I always enjoy. It is an enjoyable way to learn new things.

The writer's style is unpolished. The author tells the reader many things that might better be revealed by the story. The description of the action in the story is often clunky. Example: "His words cut like a serrated knife dripping with sarcasm."

Unfortunately the villains are obvious when they should still be unknown. The author makes the main villain obvious early in the story: "His sudden interest took Dallas by surprise...he assumed it was the importance of the mission and dismissed it." Although it is painfully obvious to the reader, the main character remains oblivious of the villain for most of the novel.

The characters in the story have a simplistic view of religion. They believe that revealing humanity's development from a race of aliens will negate all of the major world religions except Hinduism. They assume that religious belief is predicated on the literal acceptance of creation stories. I don't know if that is the author's assumption, or simply a character`s assertion.

There is a lot of action, and I was willing to read the entire book in spite of the problems. Mr. Barnette has a good story, and there is no pause in the adventure. The story was written with an obvious opening for a sequel and a series. Perhaps the writing will improve as the author's style matures, or he finds a better editor.

The Empire Chronicles: Children of the Anunnaki
By Thomas L. Stemphoski
I have done a lot of reading on the subject by reading all of the works of Zecharia Sitchin and others mentioned in Mark's book. Even though I enjoyed the book, I was a bit annoyed by the way the author mixed things up a bit still realizing what he was doing when creating a different line of thought. I knew when he was telling the story differently than what I believed I would have done if I wrote it. I would have made En.Ki.An the good guy instead of Enlil. The second thing I found annoying throughout the book was the editing. I have never read a book with so many errors in it that I found myself substituting words that should have been there. I am sure this has been caught prior to my reading. As a technical writer of military publications I found it hard to believe that the book was published this way. This had a tendency to take away from the story. Had the editing been better, I would have given it four stars for the ingenuity the author told his story. If the author continues on with The Empire Chronicles, I will buy it and hope the editing is better.

Spell Check is not editing
By Miss YaYa
I really wanted to enjoy this book, but I just could not get past the errors. I finally just kept a pencil with me to make corrections so that the person after me would be able to get through the story. I can't believe that this guy is in the education field! Didn't anyone read this before it was printed? Are book editors being replaced by Spell Check? It doesn't cut it.

As for the story line, with work it might be a movie of the week. It could have been so much better. The clueless hero of the story who is suddenly the head of a multi-million dollar expedition is really reaching for it. I had this figured out before they ever got on the boat. The love story was too 8th grade.

Review
“Kimber Simpkins is an authentic force for change on this planet, and this book is her torch. She leads the way in a new generation of women committed to removing the veil of shame and secrecy around our relationship to our body, food, and feelings. This book resonated with me on a deep level as a woman and a spiritual practitioner. I highly recommend Kimber’s book for any woman who is ready to let down the burden of food and self-esteem issues. It has the potential to act as a catalytic force toward healing, and ultimately to living a more authentic life.”
—Katie Silcox, author of the New York Times bestseller Healthy Happy Sexy

“Kimber Simpkins’s inspiring journey to finding peace with food and her body lays an amazing groundwork for 52 Ways to Love Your Body, and her insights and suggestions within this book are powerful and practical to implement. So many of us know the body image struggle all too well, and I’m so glad Kimber shines a bright light of hope and inspiration in her work!”
—Dina Proctor, author of Madly Chasing Peace

“What a powerful, practical, and heartfelt handbook on how to shift the inner conversation to compassion. Kimber speaks to us in the most supportive guiding voice—that of a trusted friend, which to me is a true love guru.”
—Melanie Salvatore-August, author of Kitchen Yoga

“Think it’s impossible to love your body? Think again! The compassion and wisdom Kimber brings to her fifty-two strategies is sure to convince you to end the war with your body and, instead, treat it the way you would a best friend. This gem of a book is going straight to my waiting room, and I hope all of my clients will read it.”

—Signe Darpinian, MFT, author of Knock Out Dieting

“Only once in a while do I pick up a book that speaks truths to me on so many levels. I’ve been involved in social work and the body acceptance movement for years, and there is a reoccurring challenge we face above all else: the want to love and treasure your own body exists, but the knowledge on how to go about it isn’t as easily grasped. Kimber fills this need for practical ways to learn that love with 52 Ways to Love Your Body. Throughout the book, she furnishes the reader with positive ways to embrace ourselves just as we are, and exercises to strengthen that appreciation for our friend, our body. I firmly believe this book will redefine how readers approach their relationships with their bodies, and what it means to nurture themselves. I’ve already recommended it to a client and it isn’t available yet—that’s how strongly I feel about this book. It’s a resource for all women like myself, those of us learning to love ourselves in a world telling us we have no reason to; this book is a calm voice of reason reminding us of all the reasons we should.”
—Kai Hibbard, body acceptance activist, writer, and weight loss reality TV survivor

“52 Ways to Love Your Body offers an excellent step-by-step guide to inspire and support readers in the process of cultivating and nurturing love for the bodies they’re in right now.”
—Melanie Klein, professor of sociology and women’s studies, and coeditor of Yoga and Body Image

“Once again, Kimber has brought to light probably the most insidious and damaging effect of modern media on young women and girls—a distrust and dislike for their own bodies. With humor and honesty, she describes incidents of self-hatred in her own life and her healing journey that led her to find a healthy relationship with her own body. Her new book offers guidelines and help through gentle and effective exercises to begin the process of discovering your greatest friend in life—your own body.”
—Angela Farmer, world-renowned yoga teacher

a year (or lifetime) of feeling damn good!
By k rafferty
When I first began recovering from an eating disorder, I hoped that one day I'd be able to love my body. But at the time, I didn't even know what "loving my body" meant. What is that, actually? I had a lot of practice criticizing my body, shaming its impulses and appetites, trying to make it disappear, and pushing it to do things it didn't want to do. I didn't have much practice loving it. I wish I had this book back then! I would have had a million (or 52) new concrete, inspiring, and fun ways to love myself, delivered in a tone that's friendly and inviting. In these pages, Simpkins is the friend you want to see when you're having a crappy day. She knows exactly how to help you see the best in yourself.

I *do* love my body now, and I still learned a ton from this delightful text. Some of my favorite new body-love practices from the book include, "Get Mad, Set Boundaries," (harness the protective power of righteous rage), "A Good Bye Party," (unearth and release harmful body myths) and "Eat Like a Goddess" (would Aphrodite inhale a sandwich while standing over the sink?).

52 Ways to Love Your Body is also a valuable professional resource. I work as a body-positive personal trainer and I'll be recommending the hell out of Simpkins's book.
Feeling tempted to weigh yourself? Read this book instead.
Considering the diet that your friend just started? Try this book.
Compelled to cut out entire food groups without medical necessity? Pick up the book!

52 Epistles of Lovingkindness
By K.M. Smith
This is the sweetest gift I've received this year! Admittedly, the year has just begun, but "52 Ways to Love Your Body" lives next to my bed, as a part of my new years mindfulness minders. What I most love about the book is how simple it is; there are anecdotes [sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, always delightful!] and then what I would consider dates with yourself. Like "Full", her memoir about coming to terms with her body image issues and eating disorder, "52 Ways…" is an open book. She tells it like it is and then gives real, mindful ways to think about your body, and by extension yourself, differently. If I have a criticism, it's that I feel like this writer's work is being pigeonholed as "eating disorder genre" and it's much more than that. [I don't have an eating disorder, and I don't "hate my body"; I was initially hesitant about picking up her first work because of how it was shelved/referred to.] I'm glad I was encouraged to give it a shot because her writing and her wit and her sheer honesty IS relatable, whether or not you have an eating disorder or any related "issues". As a middle aged woman of color who has been struggling with the aging process -- not what my body looks like but HOW it does or doesn't work in ways that I have always known it to -- these 52 little epistles of lovingkindness help me to honor my body as it is in this moment. As well, the loving treatment that the author knowingly guides you through/to is actually joyous. I've decided that I'm going to reread a chapter a week and make it my own mindfulness practice. And I've already ordered another for a young friend. Love. This. Little. Book. [I hope she comes back next year with a follow-up; it'll be an annual ritual!].

By Hayley
I was moved and inspired by these practical, down to earth tools for improving my body image. I have a challenging and turbulent history of struggle with loving myself that primarily plays out in terms of my critical inner dialogue around my weight and physical appearance.

These unique exercises and contemplations range from a creative visualization of meeting your inner critic to ancient Buddhist wisdom practices with everything in between. Little by little, I have been incorporating these tricks and practices into my life. More and more, I'm catching my negative self-talk and finding that I'm replacing it to treat myself the way I aspire to treat my best friend or my lover and the way I'd like others to treat me: with respect and kindness.

This little book is an essential text for any woman seeking to step into her full potential and an important offering in a culture where people are raised to feel shame around the miracle that is their body. Deep gratitude for this collected wisdom from a woman who obviously knows the terrain of the winding path towards self love and who has dedicated herself to sharing the hard-learned tricks to feeling confident and to living your full potential
