A revelational revolution has and is coming to the body of Christ concerning the Incarnation and the Trinity. It has turned my life upside down.
Focused on the person of Jesus Christ (who is our Union with God) and our participation in what He is for us, has done for us, on our behalf and in our place as our vicarious substitute. The preciousness of the term "vicarious humanity"(in a sense, His Humanity for our humanity).
Jeff Mcswain gives a simple wonderful explanation of Barth, and the Torrance theology that the layman can grab hold of. If the Holy Spirit leads you this way you are in for a wild ride! Thank you Jeff so much, William Bower

A Window into Barth

At 10,000 pages, The Church Dogmatics by Karl Barth would be an intimidating project for any reader. What's wonderful about Movements of Grace is that within many, many fewer pages, the author conveys much of what is special in the Dogmatics,

The occasional need to resort to Google is still there; words like "aseity" and "promeity" appear early on in Movements. That aside, the general reader can at the least enter the anterooms of 20th century theology with the author's concise take on Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and James and Thomas Torrance.

Cline, an associate professor of ancient history and archeology at George Washington University, begins his history of Jerusalem with mythical, biblical and archeological clues to its past, and the Roman histories of Josephus. Cline's narrative thread is the battles over control of a dusty village that took on increasing emotional content as it became a contested religious site. Cline claims "assimilation, annihilation and acculturation" through 10 empires and occupancies have left no one in the area today with "a legitimate pedigree definitively extending back to any of the original inhabitants." Of the alleged 118 conflicts over Jerusalem, few lacked a religious basis. Until 1917, Cline shows, Westerners controlled Jerusalem for less than a century. Beyond the Solomonic years, Jews have controlled the old city only since 1967. Perhaps no fragment of global real estate has been so volatile over so long a history. Despite sanguinary, even horrific detail from past memoirs and narratives, Cline's retelling is flat and repetitious, and the numerous references to Saddam Hussein, physically absent from this history, overreach in attempting immediate relevance. While a useful, well-annotated, textbookish guide to Jerusalem's violent past and present, it will not replace Karen Armstrong's stylish Jerusalem. About the Author
Eric H. Cline is Associate Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology in the Department of Classical and Semitic Languages and Literatures at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He is the author of several books and numerous articles on the ancient world, including The Battles of Armageddon (University of Michigan Press, 2000), which won the 2001 Biblical Archaeology Society Publication Award.

Excellent read, but definately skewed view at points

Overall I greatly enjoyed the book. It was a good read, and I liked the format and how he tied it in to current affairs and political events in each chapter. It was informative and ballanced, and in most points he did a good job of being objective and neutral about issues.

However in the last couple of chapters I feel that he did fall down a bit. The most glaring example for me was in his discussion of the Six Day War. If you read his account with no other knowledge of events you would think that Israel pulled off a almost completely unprovoked pre-emptive strike. There was a very fleeting minor mention of Egypt's military build up, though unless memory fails he did not mention how focused that build up on the border was. However he UTTERLY fails to mention that Egypt had blockaded and shut down Israel's ports, which ACCORDING TO INTERNATIONAL LAW is an act of war. That is a huge oversight in understanding the events and causes of the Six Day War.

But, a few skewed points aside, again I enjoyed the book a great deal. As a conservative christian theologian I will warn other Christians if you are not comfortable reading other views and interacting with secular historical thought this may not be the book for you. It is not written from a Judeo-Christian presupposition. That is not a knock on the book, as I enjoy historical books, and enjoy reading altering viewpoints and opinions.

Again this book receives the highest marks and for people who want a greater understanding of what is going on in the Middle East today, and the many factors throughout history that colour current events, this is one of the better "introductory" books I have read. You could obviously write whole books or series on each one of these individual events or periods described, but this book does an excellent job as a survey of historical events that have given us the Jerusalem of today.

Eric Cline has written a vast range of books and articles for both specialized publications and general audiences. His latest book, "Jerusalem Besieged", is written in the same vein as his previous book "Battles of Armageddon" and yet in many ways this new book must have been difficult to write. While Megiddo is in ruins, Jerusalem is still the religious center of three major world faiths and is held sacred by hundreds of millions of people throughout the world. It is almost impossible to write a book on Jerusalem without offending someone, but Cline has managed to write one of the most tactful books possible. Nowhere does he slide into polemic, nor has he made any religious claims in lieu of evidence. He has tried his best to write an even-handed account of Jerusalem's military past. He has spent a great deal of time in that city and his love of the subject comes through loud and clear. He writes as an archaeologist not as a political commentator, and yet there is much journalistic material he has read and incorporated into the text. Cline writes in beautifully lucid prose. General readers will find the material accessible and yet Cline's research is available in the footnotes and the extensive bibliography. Readers are given a framework within which to think about the repercussions of several millenia of strife in Jerusalem. Cline documents 118 separate conflicts during which Jerusalem has been destroyed completely twice, besieged 23 times and attacked an additional 52 times. It has been captured and re-captured 44 times and this does not even include the 20 revolts and innumerable riots. Cline manages to cover them in less than 500 pages while covering each incident, and giving judicious opinions in places where controversy occurs. This is a must purchase for military historians and general readers alike.

Fine Book

I found this book to be a very informative and enjoyable read. I had no idea of the number of times Jerusalem was attacked.
The historic information and the manner in which it is presented makes it an exciting experience. I found my knowledge of many of the incidents in scripture were made more complete as I read this book.

Former Lecturer at Buckingham Chilterns University College, High Wycombe, UK, and now retired, William Bolton has worked in industry and academia as a senior lecturer in a college of technology, a member of the Nuffield Advanced Physics team, an adviser to a British government aid project in Brazil on technical education, as a UNESCO consultant in Argentina and Thailand, and as Head of Research and Development at the Business and Technician Education Council. I originally found this book at our local library. My wife liked it so much I purchased a copy for her. You really get a lot of sheet music with this book. The only drawback is that it is a bit bulky to place on your piano (200 songs and over 860 pages!).

About the Author

David De Cremer is professor of behavioral business ethics at Rotterdam School of Management, the Netherlands, scientific director of the "Erasmus Centre of Behavioral Ethics" and visiting professor at London Business School, UK, and Ghent University, Belgium. He is the recipient of the British Psychology Society (BPS) award for "Outstanding Ph.D. in Social Psychology" (year 2000), of the Jos Jaspars Early Career Award for "Outstanding contributions to social psychology" (awarded by the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology; year 2005), of the "Comenius European Young Psychologist Award" (awarded by the European Federation of Psychology; year 2007), and of the International Society for Justice Research Early Career Contribution Award (year 2008). He is also a member of the Young Academy of Sciences in the Netherlands (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, "De Jonge Akademie", KNAW). David's work has been published in the top journals in both basic and applied psychology (Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Psychological Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and Leadership Quarterly). Rolf van Dick is Professor of Social Psychology at the Goethe-University Frankfurt (Germany) and currently serves as Associate Dean. Prior to his current position Rolf van Dick was Professor of Social Psychology and Organizational Behavior at Aston Business School Birmingham (UK). He was visiting professor at the University of Alabama (2001), the University of the Aegean, Rhodes, Greece (2002), and in Kathmandu, Nepal (2009). His research interests center on the application of social identity theory in organizational settings. In particular, he is interested in identity processes in teams and organizations which are highly diverse, he is applying identity research in the area of mergers and acquisitions and is currently investigating leadership and identity in the field and the laboratory. Rolf served as associate editor of the European Journal of Work & Organizational Psychology and is or has been editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Management and the Journal of Personnel Psychology. He has published more than 40 books and book chapters and 70 papers in academic journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

J. Keith Murnighan is the Harold H. Hines Jr. Distinguished Professor of Risk Management at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He earned his Ph.D. and MS degrees in social psychology and a BS in psychology and math from Purdue University. Prior to joining Kellogg in 1996, he taught at the Universities of Illinois and British Columbia. He has also had visiting appointments at the London Business School, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, Ecole Superieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (ESSEC) outside Paris, and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. In August of 2006 he received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Management, a Career Achievement award. His research has been published in many different academic journals, primarily in organizational behavior, psychology, and economics. His books include The Dynamics of Bargaining Games (Prentice Hall, 1991), Bargaining Games: A New Approach to Strategic Thinking in Negotiations (William Morrow, 1992), Social Psychology in Organizations: Advances in Theory and Research (Prentice Hall, 1993), and The Art of High-Stakes Decision-Making: Tough Calls in a Speed-Driven World (with John Mowen; John Wiley & Sons, 2002). Great book

I am only one third of the way through the book so far; it is a slow read because many of the terms used remain undefined. But the information is extremely useful, and solidly supported by research with numerous references. As an example, the first chapter describes what happens to a person when you give them power. They develop skills to enable them to handle that power, some useful (they become more creative), and some potentially problems for the organization (they become optimistic, they tend to lose the ability to see from other's perspectives, and may even begin to see subordinates as mere tools to their own ends). The second chapter describes methods and pitfalls of orienting people's behavior along social norms. The third chapter describes what characteristics make a successful entrepreneur. I look forward to completing the book.
