I found all of the information in this book to very helpful and useful. Yes, you can find all of the information in this book on the web but for the price that you pay, I believe you're saving yourself time/money by having it all right at your fingertips without searching.

The material in this book is good for beginners as it provides a good amount of sample coding and explanations. If you're just looking to brush up on your Razor syntax then this is a good reference book to use.

It's a good, quick read that is worth the money.

Nora Ephron, best known for her screenplays When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and Silkwood and best sellers Heartburn and Crazy Salad, has written a sort of Ephron retrospective. Though humorously self-deprecating and poignant, critics agree that the essays, some published previously,are uneven. Readers may love "I Hate My Purse"—unless they find it outdated. Other essays came off as vain, stale, or elitist in their carefree attitude toward luxury items. Only "Considering the Alternative" received uniform praise for its generous introspection. Despite the collection's lightweight feel, Ephron still writes "like someone who has something useful and important to tell her readers" (Los Angeles Times). "When your children are teenagers," for example, "it's important to have a dog so that someone in the house is happy to see you."

Enough with denial - embrace it ;-)

I've loved Nora Ephron ever since Sleepless In Seattle and You've Got Mail. Heartburn (which she wrote) turned into a hit film, and so I knew when I saw that she wrote another book again, I thought I'd pick it up. It's a collection of amusing essays all about growing older.
She says that there are so many books out there about what to do after menopause etc, but none addressed your neck change as you age so she thought this was a cute and funny title.
She talks about maintenance being a second career because a lot of women are pre-empting age. For example, hair dying, botox etc. She talks about her husbands theory of women either being birds, muffins or horses and that is the shape of your face. If you are a muffin, you can have a zillion face lifts and be fine, but other shaped faces - not so much.
She talks more seriously about reaching 60 and start loosing friends. You have to come to grips with reality and realise that we aren't invincible and won't die - it's getting closer to being on the cards.
She also mentions things she wishes she'd known; You can't be friends with people who call after 11pm, Write everything down, Back up your files etc. She's very funny (a very dry sense of humour) and it shows through this book. It's a good read that is sometimes serious but overall will be thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. If you are a fan of her movies, you will definately love I Feel Bad About My Neck ...

Witty, clever but leightweight...

Nora Ephron is witty, clever and has her finger on the pulse of American women everywhere in her delightful book, I Feel Bad About My Neck: and Other Thoughts on Being a Woman. My only complaint is that at 137 pages (and small pages at that), it's a rather lightweight book.

Ephron writes about so many of the problems we women face: hairstyles, maintenance routines, raising children, empty nesting, reading glasses, cooking, purses, living in New York City, aging, and the death of good friends. Some of her observations are brutally honest. She talks about how a neck is a telltale sign of aging. "The neck is a dead giveaway. Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth. You have to cut open a redwood tree to see how old it is, but you wouldn't have to do that if it had a neck." She has a refreshing list of "What I Wish I'd Known" including "Never marry a man you wouldn't want to be divorced from" and "The empty nest is underrated."

I' m not real big on make-up routines, I wear glasses all the time and love my poker-straight hair. So some of her musings I found funny but didn't necessarily relate. But where Ephron and I see eye to eye is about reading. "Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person." One of my favorite chapters is "On Rapture," about the state of rapture she feels when she discovers a good book. She also lists some books that changed her life. The chapters where she discusses reading are the best in the book.

I Feel Bad About My Neck got raves from most of the book critics that reviewed this book. While I enjoyed it, I just was expecting more from Ephron.

Hilarious, witty, thought provoking

I didn't remember purchasing this book & started reading it one night having no idea what it was about. By chapter 2 I had to stop so I could look to see who the author was. I was literally laughing out loud every chapter of this book. I want to tell Nora Ephron my life story (mostly just the last 3 years - enough for a lifetime) and have her put it in words so that one day my daughter can read it and laugh rather than cry. That's what Nora does, she makes even the saddest things somehow funny & endearing. I loved this book!!

The Kind of Bible That Has It All

I have used the Harper Study Bible New American Standard Bible since it first was published in 1985. It is the only New American Standard Bible that contains the most literal and accurate text translation of the original Scriptures in the Englsih language. But the Harper Study Bible has much more than the rest of the New American Standard Bibles in print. I will list them here:

1.) The text is in paragraph formate, not columned like most Bibles, enabling easier reading.
2.) Above each paragraph is the subject heading, making it easier to find a topic for study.
3.) The chain reference is on the outside column of the page according to each verse, making it easier to look up.
4.) The words of Christ are in red, placing His words in a category all its own, as it ought to be.
5.) Notes which form a verse by verse commentary are at the bottom of each page written by Dr. Harold Lindsell.
5.) Each book of the Bible is prefaced with a background synopsis of the writer, historical context, and other valuable information.
6.) There is a limited concordance in the back of the Bible which, like any other which all Bible versions, of little use, because it is limited.
7.) There are maps in the back of the Bible which help with the study of God's Word.

Now a word about the late Dr. Harold Lindsell. He was a scholar with a conservative mainline Evangelical approach to God's Word, and therefore his notes througnout the entire Harper Study Bible New American Standard Bible is made with great care by him, balanced, fair, and without the doctrinal fallout of being in this "camp" or "that." He believed in the innerrancy of Scripture, and it is reflected in his writing and in his notes throughout the Scriptures.

This Bible is out of print, and up until earlier in 2013, one was able to purchase a copy of it either in hardbound, or leather for a decent price. I purchased fourteen of them during the first six months of this year, and the price ranges I bought them for were from $18.00 for one in GOOD CONDITION to $150.00 in LIKE NEW CONDITION. I did not pay the exhorbitant artificially inflated prices they're now advertised for. Ironically, I purchased many of my copies from some of the same vendors here at Amazon.com, others I purchased from other used book vendors for reasonable prices.

It is unfortunate that the Harper Study Bible New American Standard Bible is out of print, because it is the only Bible that features side-column reference, paragraphed text with topical headings per paragraph, the words of Christ in red, with commentaries at the bottom of each page, as well as a background to each book of the Bible written by conservative Evangelical Scholar, Dr. Harold Lindsell. None of the new study Bibles in print today offer all of these features in a single volume as does The Harper Study Bible New American Standard Bible.

But there is absolutely no reason for the sellers of these used Bibles to advertise them at inflated prices they've been posted as, especially when these same sellers sold them to people like me just months ago for more reasonably affordable prices. NOT ONE OF THEM HAVE SOLD UNDER THE NEW INFLATED PRICES, and NOT ONE OF THEM WILL SELL UNTIL THESE SELLERS BRING THEIR PRICES DOWN AND CUT THEM BY AT LEAST ONE HALF OF WHAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY ADVERTISED FOR. About the Author
WILLIAM O'GRADY teaches linguistics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is the author of several scholarly books. His research focuses on syntactic theory, language acquisition, and Korean.
JOHN ARCHIBALD in addition to teaching linguistics at the University of Calgary, studies the acquisition of phonology and has written several books on the subject.
MARK ARONOFF is professor of linguistics at Stony Brook University and was President of the Linguistic Society of America for 2005. He has written numerous articles and several books on aspects of linguistic morphology, as well as on orthography and the teaching of linguistics.
JANIE REES-MILLER is director of the English as a Second Language program at Marietta College, Ohio. In research and teaching, she is concerned with the interface between theory and practice and with making linguistics accessible to nonlinguists. An excellent overview of the huge field of linguistics, but somewhat narrow-minded at times.

A great overview of the incredibly broad and intriguing field of linguistics. O'Grady et al. have done a very nice job presenting a clear, concise, and well-organized view of several essential elements of the field. As a sociolinguist, I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for an overview of linguistics.

One of my only complaints is that there's a pretty significant bias toward structuralist, Universal Grammar, and generative linguistics, with very little indication given that this is the perspective the book is taking or that there are other perspectives (most notably the up-and-coming usage-based perspective), which may give readers with less knowledge of the field a somewhat unduly narrowed understanding. Overall though, this is a great work that was highly enjoyable and informative!

Lacking without study guide.

I feel like I need to write a review to balance out all these reviews of the condition of the book. This book is terrible for someone that wants to be led through each section slow and steady with optimum examples and reasoning corresponding directly to the examples. The 'appendix' for each section, especially complex sections like Phonology, is painfully short.

It has exercises but absolutely no way to understand how to do those exercises except within the framework of the main definitions of the book and the aforementioned appendix sections. Think of it like a math book with no answers and very few examples on how to work your way through the various problems presented. A study guide is usually very helpful with math but I find it absolutely necessary here.

In short I find this book lacking for sections like Phonology. IMO you need the study guide or it's not going to be as clear as it needs to be. I guess with a great teacher and the book it is possible to work your way through it, but for me I was hoping for more.

TLDR: Get the study guide. This book by itself is mediocre for learning HOW to actually do problems.

Good overall quality

Although used and a paperback edition, this textbook came in excellent condition. The charts and diagrams are very useful to organize and understand information, and it does a good job of trying to teach concepts as well as definitions. My one gripe is that the beginning rushes the content just a little quickly, but with a good teacher (or other resources if you're learning on your own) that shouldn't be an issue. The book does seem to assume that you have some prior knowledge of linguistics.

As for the body of the book, it is rather serious at times but balances that out with lighthearted, corny moments. There are also asides into topics such as geography and anatomy wherever such understanding helps the reader out--if you enjoy that sort of thing (and linguistics), the book will be very engaging. Otherwise, it may be rather trite.
