Mesmerizing, arresting and captivating like an art!!
By ADITI SAHA
“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

----Pablo Picasso

Pip Vaughan-Hughes, an English writer, writing under the name of Philip Kazan, pens a mystifying historical fiction, The Painter of Souls that is based on the life and times of the famous painter, Fra Filippo Lippi, during the 15th century Renaissance Florence. Although there is not much known to this great historic painter's life, so the author immerses into Filippo's paintings to give a fictional sketch of his early as well as later life in Florence.

Synopsis:

Beauty can be a gift...or a wicked temptation...

So it is for Filippo Lippi, growing up in Renaissance Florence. He has a talent - not only can he see the beauty in everything, he can capture it, paint it. But while beauty can seduce you, and art can transport you - it cannot always feed you or protect you.

To survive, Filippo di Tommaso Lippi, street urchin, forger, drinker, seducer of nuns must become Fra Fra Filippo Lippi - Carmelite friar, man of God. Yet at the same time he is Lippo Lippi, creator of some the most radiantly beautiful paintings, Botticelli's teacher, Medici's confidante.

So who is he really - lover, believer, father, teacher, artist? Which man? Which life? Is anything true except the paintings?

An extraordinary journey of passion, art and intrigue, The Painter of Souls takes us to a time and place in Italy's history where desire reigns and salvation is found in the strangest of places.

Fra Filippo Lippi, born in the 15th century Florence, belongs to the second generation artists of Renaissance period. According to the book, Filippo, a.k.a, Pippo, began his life as a street urchin with other homeless boys when his father died and his mother took ill. But luck saves him from living in the streets, when he was rescued by the monks from Carmelite monastery and gave him an opportunity to be a friar in that convent. Unfortunately, he was not too keen to lead that sort of life, instead he continued to draw and one day, when he captures the true essence of a homeless woman and her baby by their souls on a cloak, his art and skill gets noticed by Masaccio, yet another legendary artist of Renaissance period. Followed by an apprenticeship under the great artist while living the convent life, we see Pippo the Sketcher transforming into Fra Filippo Lippi while capturing the angels and the souls of everyday life with such ease and kindness and compassion.

The writing is extremely lyrical and the prose flows like a poetic verse. The author's eloquent words and Florentine flair draws the readers into the core of the story right from the very first page. There is not much narration, but they are kept engaging.

There is lot of art and the art-lovers are in for a treat if they pick this book up, especially the 15th century art when the churches and the cathedrals were being painted with angels and the Virgin and with the images from Christ folklore in Florence for the first time. Since there is not much known about Lippi and his life, so the author relies mostly on Lippi's artwork as well as his own desire for art to re-create as well as give a beautiful painting to his life that is eye-catchy with bright hues of colors and angelic faces. The art world in Florence is the focal point in the book that features some of the greatest artists of that time.

The timeline and city are perfectly depicted into the book, thus promising the readers with a time-warp kind-of feeling. From the culture to the society to the linguistic style to the fashion to the poverty on the streets to the religious values and its importance in Florence in the mid 15th century are vividly portrayed as well as incorporated in the story.

The story about this young boy unreels mostly like a dreamy adventure where there is love, compassion, religion and friendships with light humor and where the author strikingly catches the fine skyline of Florence, thus making the novel a masterpiece of great art work.

Verdict: A perfect read for all those historical fiction lovers and if you want to experience Florence like never before, then do grab a copy of this compelling novel about one of the legendary Florentine artists of all times.

Novel set in Florence (Filippo Lippi: “the master of presence”)
By TripFiction
A novel for lovers of art. The author takes the reader right back to the early years of 15th Century Florence, when the city and Europe were on the cusp of the Renaissance, and builds a story around the artist Fra Filippo Lippi, formerly known as Pippo.

Pippo started out as a street urchin, his father had died, his mother suffered from melancholia and he had no choice but to join a disparate group of street children who had to make their way in the city. His income largely derived from the drawings he created and then sold. But the hand of luck - perhaps divine intervention even – plucked him from the streets and brought him to the life of a friar in the Carmine. But he was never the staunchest convert and continued to draw, and one day he found himself so taken with the scene of a woman feeding her baby that he had to capture her essence on the inside of his cloak (remembering of course that vellum and wood and walls were the carriers for paintings of that era and paper was still in the early stages of production). Talent spotted, he is apprenticed eventually to the painter Masaccio, who according to Vasari (essentially, the first art historian) was the best painter of his generation because of his ability to form life-like figures that had a real feel of three dimensionality.

He mixed with the great and the good of the art world, Donatello (the genius of the age) and Ghiberti (who created the bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery) and eventually caught the eye of Patron Cosimo de Medici.

It is clear the author has a real passion for art and has carried out extensive research to bring the feel of the art and the age to the modern reader. It was a harsh and cruel world for the poor, and a struggle to eke out the most frugal living. The church was a focal point in the lives of most people, and justice for the populace was summary. There is little known of the life of the actual painter, so the author has had to find his inspiration through the art of the period, as well as his imagination.

I came away from this book feeling that I had been immersed in a period where things were changing on the art front, and by the end I certainly felt more informed. The overall feel of the book is strangely muted and monochrome – the inevitable pungent smells and the visceral sights of the time only occasionally come to the fore; I had anticipated an assault on the senses given the period and so it did at some level feel like a bit of a sanitised retrospective.

The book is mentioned in the same breath as The Miniaturist (set in Amsterdam) and Girl with a Pearl Earring (set in Delft), but for me the vibrancy and colour to be found in those two books wasn’t quite there. The book cover actually reflects the content really well, earthy yet pastel colours and a delicate detail from the painter’s Madonna and Child. Solid and interesting, a good and ultimately gentle read.

I felt I was there in early fifteenth century Italy...
By Dr. Robin Bentel
Reading The Painter of Souls brought my thinking back to all those most amazing altar pieces, frescos, grandly framed and painted depictions of religious notables and biblical events I've seen in my travels throughout the years. And right here in this book the master painters who had traded their lives to create them have come to life. Somehow, believably so. I've been transfixed turning the pages of this story, where the clock has turned back to the times of the plague, of superstition, of religious control over the thinking and customs of early fifteenth century Italy. With the death of his father, a religious and principled butcher - and his mother who could not continue to manage the family's affairs, or her own life either, without him, Pippo Lippi can no longer cling to the few poverty stricken rooms of their large home left to them after his mother, sister, and he himself become all but destitute. Leaving what little is left to his sister and invalid mother he joins other young orphaned youths living hand to mouth on the streets. Always with a lump of charcoal and scrounged bits of salvaged vellum, he ecks out pennies in exchange for his surprisingly good sketches of the people around him. Years of scrabbling to survive are followed by the kindness of local widow women remembering the goodness and piety of his father. Filipino is brought to the Carmelite Monastery where he finds refuge from street life and removal from the friendship and belonging of his urchin culture. His gifts of artistry coupled with a heart that sees beyond the physical to the divinity and goodness within captivates those around him. Apprenticeship to the notable maestro artists of the day reveal the glory of the works Friar Felippe Lippo then creates. Over time he himself becomes teacher to many other of the most noted painters of his day. A touching, beautifully written story which will have me returning to Florence, Italy seeking out the grand painted works with fresh eyes.

Using Multivariate Statistics (5th Edition), by Barbara G. Tabachnick, Linda S. Fidell

Using Multivariate Statistics provides practical guidelines for conducting numerous types of multivariate statistical analyses. It gives syntax and output for accomplishing many analyses through the most recent releases of SAS, SPSS, and SYSTAT, some not available in software manuals. The book maintains its practical approach, still focusing on the benefits and limitations of applications of a technique to a data set — when, why, and how to do it. Overall, it provides advanced students with a timely and comprehensive introduction to today's most commonly encountered statistical and multivariate techniques, while assuming only a limited knowledge of higher-level mathematics.

Marred by Errata
By Amazon Customer
The 5th edition of this popular book is, in my opinion, marred by a large number of errata (see the book's web page.) While it is common for technical books to have errata, I must raise some doubts about how carefully the book was "proofed." Needless to say, this is not exactly confidence inspiring.

Valued Resource
By Greg V.
I've bought a lot of stats books over the years - and this is one I keep going back to. It fills a nice gap between introductory stats books and advanced texts that address one particular method/topic.

I like that each chapter has, more or less, three parts: 1) a conceptual part, 2) a math part, and 3) a stats program part. Some parts may be more or less useful to you. When reviewing, I usually like to stare at, and mentally work through, the math. I also like the stats program parts as syntax for software is often provided.

This being said, if I get really into a topic (e.g., using mixed models to examine change over time), I will go to a more in-depth text. However, reading the T&F summary first does help give me a broader conceptual framework on which to hang the details of more in-depth materials.

Lastly, I also like the chapter on data cleaning and checking basic (univariate) stats before continuing on with more complex analyses. I work with other people who take a very point-and-click, magic button, get the stat approach to data analysis. You know, just looking for that p-value for a very specific term. I like having something to show that gives steps for getting to know your data better than that. It leads to better practice, IMHO.

A Lifesaver!!
By Kristen
This book has been at my side throughout my entire dissertation process. It clearly explains different statistical methods, analysis assumptions, and interpretive issues. It also provides sample write-ups, which have been helpful. It covers basic data screening techniques and simpler analyses such as factor analysis and multiple regression to more advanced topics such as multi-level linear modeling. Most importantly, it explains the major topics in plain English. It is advanced enough to not be insulting to users who have some familiarity in statistics. However, the writing is not so technical as to be incomprehensible to those without advanced statistics degrees. I highly recommend this book to graduate students and advanced researchers and will continue to use it as a valuable resource throughout my research career.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Jennifer A. Nielsen

Question: What inspired you to write The False Prince?

Nielsen: I’d had the general idea for The False Prince for some time, but could never find the right protagonist to carry the weight of the story I wanted to tell. The central character, Sage, was found in the words of a song called Guaranteed, by the great Eddie Vedder. It said, “I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me, guaranteed.” From that line, I had the instant image of a defiant but charismatic boy who always stays a step ahead of the game, and where other players have no clue that all the rules are very quietly being rewritten.

Q: Where did Sage’s voice come from?

Nielsen: Sage came to me as a complete character, as fully developed as if he had been a real person. So writing The False Prince wasn’t really about creating him, but instead, it was the experience of discovering him as the story unfolded. There were several moments when I knew what was waiting for Sage if he didn’t back down, and yet, he never would. So I gritted my teeth and let things unfold the only way they could with him. As I work on the sequels, he continues to surprise, amuse, and shock me. He’s the most complex character I’ve ever written, and I’m always thrilled to get feedback from readers who are as fascinated by him as I am.

Q: Was the setting or any of the other characters inspired by real people or places?

Nielsen: Sage is very much his own person, and as a whole, is completely unique. However, there is one trait of his that I borrowed from a student I had when I was a high school debate teacher years ago. He was popular, brilliant, charming, and an amazingly talented thief. At the start of every ride to a tournament, he would steal the watch off of the bus driver’s wrist, then keep it for the entire trip. As he left the bus at the end, he would hand the watch back to the driver, explaining it must have fallen to the floor. Then the driver always thanked him for being such a great and honest kid. I should’ve been angry, but I never was – he just pulled off his scams that well

Q: Where do you like to go to write?

Nielsen: I’ll write anywhere. I work out scenes in my head while driving or in the shower, and pick up inspiration from events I notice each day. I try to always keep a pen and extra paper handy so that if something occurs to me I can write it down and not risk losing it (I hate it when I know there was something I thought of earlier that I had loved, but now can’t remember it!). My favorite places for actual writing aren’t very exciting. I love to write curled up on a loveseat beneath a sunny window. And nearly every night I’ll print out pages I’ve worked on in the day and edit them in bed before I fall asleep.

Q: Have you always wanted to be a writer? When did you first know this is what you wanted to do?

Nielsen: I’ve written for as long as I can remember, but the idea that I could turn that into a career never seemed real to me. I never knew any authors growing up, and as far as I could tell, they were mythical people who lived like the Great Gatsby on the other side of the country, or who had lived a hundred years ago. So I wrote as a hobby, then planned on other careers that real people had, such as being a detective, or working somewhere in the theater, or being a teacher.

That all changed after my oldest child was born and I stayed home to care for him. Suddenly, I had a lot more time on my hands, which I filled with reading. But it wasn’t long before the stories in my head became more interesting than the books in my hand, and I realized that I wanted to hold a book of my own. That was when I decided to seriously pursue writing as a career. It’s the perfect place for me to be now, and I can’t imagine being happier anywhere else.

From Booklist
This first book in a planned trilogy is action-oriented fantasy, but don’t expect magical creatures. Instead, it revolves around political intrigue (à la Megan Whalen Turner’s The Thief, 1996). Sage is a street-savvy orphan, and along with two other boys he is recruited by Conner, a nobleman who wants to remake them in the image of their country’s lost prince, a victim of pirates and presumed dead. The task is urgent, as the rest of the royal family has been murdered and civil war seems imminent. As the boys, chosen for their passing resemblance to Prince Jaron, compete to assume a new identity and the throne, Sage discovers some unpleasant truths about their host, beyond his treasonous plans to pass one of them off as royalty. Sage is a likable hero full of smart-alecky snarkiness. Especially appealing are the friendships he forges: one with his bodyguard and teacher; another with a mute serving girl. Though lacking in subtlety, Nielsen’s plot twists keep coming, and readers will want to see how they play out as Sage’s adventures continue. Grades 4-7. --Karen Cruze

Brilliantly Executed from Start to Finish
By Wendy Sparrow
I keep searching for the words to describe how the layers carefully crafted in this book came together. Earlier today, I bought this book after seeing it compared to both Hunger Games and Harry Potter. A lofty and impossible comparison I thought. No way. Then, I heard from one of my daughter's friends that it was a---maz--ing. (The word had more than three syllables, I kid you not. Possibly seven syllables.)

So, I thought that I'd just check it out before passing it on to my daughter, but I couldn't put it down. I just finished it after reading it in one straight sitting.

The layer-upon-layer build in this book was brilliant. Every little detail felt like it was leading somewhere to something. The author used an unreliable narrator--you knew that the first person narration was hiding more than he was revealing. Every so often, you'd catch a hint of this and it would drag you breathless through more pages as you waited for the reveal that was building and building.

I thought there was no way it could live up to the internal hype I was creating. Telling me a book is like either Harry Potter or Hunger Games is dooming me to disappointment--I thought. This book delivered on this promise. I liked how it kept me guessing because I knew there was something that I didn't know...some big secret that all these smaller secrets and hints were leading to. I kept mentally guessing...and I was completely wrong and the ending blew me away.

It's not really like Harry Potter--though Sage is clever, young (14 or 15), and wonderfully imperfect and the writing is equally as brilliant.

It's not quite like Hunger Games, but it kept me reading with the same anxious anticipation. It was more hopeful and the end of this first book more satisfying. It was also significantly less violent in my opinion.

It was somewhat like Eragon with the intelligence of Ender's Game with a narration that reminded me of Odd Thomas. But, wait, it wasn't like any of them--it was just itself and it was exceptional.

Also, of note, this may be a book in a series, but this book can stand alone. The ending was enough even if I'm anxious to read another book in the series. This book felt complete and not just a portion of a series. That feels like a rare thing these days in YA books.

For Parents: there was no profanity, adult situations, or gratuitous violence. As far as violence goes, if you felt comfortable letting your child read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire--this is comparable.

Good Book To Read Along With Your Kids
By Robin Snyder
Sage is a classic rapscallion, I don’t get to use that word enough, I mean when we meet him he is running through the city trying to keep a hold of a slippery roast he just stole. The kid has a quick tongue that always seems to get him into as much trouble as it gets him out of and he seems to have a little problem gift with sticky fingers.

He seems like an industrious young orphan on the brink of being on his own until someone shows up and makes him an offer he literally can’t turn down. It seems like Sage will be in a competition with a few other boys, the prize is initially unclear but it soon becomes apparent that to lose would be very dangerous. So Sage must learn everything he can in two weeks or possibly not make it out of this situation alive

***Master Graves was incensed and said, as punishment for my disruption, I would have to write my letters an extra ten times that day.
“Ten times the better I’ll know them, then,” I said. “How strange that you should punish me by ensuring I come out more educated than Roden, who has tried to obey you.”***

Middle Grade books are fun to read sometimes because I don’t have to put a ton of thought into them. This story is really readable. Sage and his discordant ways are easily likable and I enjoyed how he turned every obstacle into an advantage. He plays people off each other well and is as stubborn as a rock when he sets his mind on something no matter the consequences he must pay.

As an adult I guessed many of the twists that the book had coming in it. There were still a couple of surprises but not as many as there probably would have been if I was a younger reader. That didn’t stop it from being enjoyable though and I sped my way through the story very easily.

I didn’t only like Sage I also became attached to a few of the other characters like Hobb and Imogen. The friendships that Sage built with them along the way were some that I know will play out more in the upcoming books. There is a cute inkling of a romance with Imogen but it was totally age appropriate and it was refreshing to have something stay so innocent.

Even though this is a trilogy this first book wraps up nicely as a standalone. The Chapters are short so it is really good for reading aloud to your family.

Overall - If you have kids and are looking for something to read with them that won’t bore you to tears. Or if you are like me and enjoy a good fun MG fantasy every now and again with interesting characters then this should be perfect for your needs.

BEST. BOOK. EVER.
By Amazon Customer
Jennifer A. Nielsen is possibly one of the most talented authors to ever walk on the earth. The amazing plot and writing techniques of this book (and trilogy) made the decision easy to declare it my new favorite series-more than worthy of it being a #1 New York Times Bestseller. I've officially read The False Prince 4 times, and intend to read it again in the near future. The witty replies, unforgettable plot twists, and (thank you thank you thank you!!!) clean language make it a book you'll find it impossible to put down- even after the very last word. I really did almost cry when I finished the last book of the series. No, I didn't want it to end! Sage, Jaron, and the other characters in the story will forever live on in my heart :) yes, I'm that much of a nerd.
